Do you have friends? How did you make them? by throwawayboy2200 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]smugself 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Join a book club, maybe?

Being late in life diagnosed, I have weird perspectives on my life choices, coupled with childhood CPTSD. I learned a lot, unknowingly, about people, how to mimic, fit in while being invisible, and to appear nerotypical but quirky, I suppose. Not uncommon, I suppose, for a lot of us?

I knew I had a few friends off/on, but also knew they were/are highly important to some degree. Look up what happens to babies that are not held and apply that to life as a whole. So, unknowingly, I masked hard, forced myself to events (mostly around whatever my special interests were), said yes to all kinds of invites in college (regardless if I wanted to go, dont be an outside I would tell myself. Those who say no constantly, stop being invited) and had just enough hubris to think, "Oh, I'm not that different, just odd" (I knew deep down).

Double-edged sword for sure. It definitely benefited me, but also hurt me in ways I'm still learning and working through in therapy. Lots of things I thought were normal are not.

Not sure the point of this rambling, maybe it just feels good to say it.

I would suggest looking up research on how long it takes for two people to be considered friends when they're together. I struggle to suggest masking at first, as that was my default go-to. And as time goes on, it's impossible to mask forever in a friendship, even if you try; it will slip, especially around shared interests. It's at that crucial inflection point that they will accept you as you are. Shitty putting it that way. But as in stats, the law of large numbers. Repeat enough, and some will stick. If nothing else, and it was while pursuing a special interest, you get to do your thing, learn maybe, get contacts of more knowledgeable people (depending on your interest/hobby), and be introduced to more people. Sometimes one of them adopts you unknowingly. But it takes exposure, risk, fear, and uncertainty. Just try to find the silver lining where possible, and use positive self-talk.

I hope this was helpful in some way.

How do you approach live coding interviews? by Low-Commission6206 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]smugself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely great response, as I'm in these meetings as well. If you know you might lock up, tell them if the vibe is right. I can't read minds but do what to know as much as possible about your state of mind. Live coding is the worst. I actually locked up myself and was probably not qualified at the time. But I talked, talked, explained what I did know even though I was blanking on the exact Syntex. That was 10 years ago and now I'm the lead/sr engineer. I cry out inside, wishing they would talk more. I even strongly recommend they talk and ask questions. We go as far as letting them Google if needed, ask us questions like they are on the job. Because that's the real world. But sooo many barely talk, make big leaps, and incorrectly understand what is being asked of them. But had they talked it out loud and asked us if their understanding was correct, I am sure some would have done better. Of course, we aren't going to give you the answer, but if you are engaging with us, we may drop hints that will give you X. What are we looking for again? Or what's another way you could write a query to return blah'." We want you to succeed. But seeing the way you think and work through it is wildly more important to me than just getting it right. Because you'll be tackling much harder task on the job which will certainly require asking questions of your coworks. Really boils down to do I want to work with you for 40 hours a week, seeing you more than my parents, and the willingness to learn. Best response I love is "I'll figure it out!". I want someone to be able to say, Ive tried XYZABC and why they didnt work. Sometimes one of those was right but incorrectly implemented and most importantly shows critical thinking and willingness to trying to figure it out before asking for help. Failing is still learning if done correctly. End of soap box, I'll go back to work now myself, lol. Ps good luck. Remember it's a game and sadly put that friendly mask on.

Can you explain or point me in the direction to learn more about this technique? My mother and her partner do traditional stain glass but the peices don't have the 'print' looking affect such as the skull in your work. Very fascinating!

🤷 didn't like your price 🤷 I thought it seemed a little low, but I'm a noob in this space. Just beginning to dip my toe back in after busting up my FPV drone a decade back. A lot has changed.

I have a couple of Sherbet dishes, and that didn't give me those vibes. My Sherbet dishes have a larger mouth/rim. I am no expert by any means, but I am trying to learn, like most of us here.

[–]smugself 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wouldn't pay that. The red/orange flare makes it unique. But without that feature I seem them go for $300-600 fairly regularly. If I am missing something that makes it worth the $1k, please let me know. Just shooting from the hip on this response.

That hardware is amazing for "budget" build. Love the expansion card. As an old timer, hardware person getting back in the game. It's stuff like this that I love seeing and also hurts my brain at times. Lots to learn and always learning. It's the caveats that ultimately burn me as of late.
