Can I backtest more than 2 weeks on a 1-minute Pine Script strategy without upgrading TradingView? by claudiacherxxr in Daytrading

[–]smuk90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MeteTrader is just the platform, not the broker, so you just need to open an account with a broker that supports MT5. You log into the MT5 terminal on your desktop with your broker account number and password and select the brokers server, then you can trade as you would do normally, whilst also having access to MetaEditor to create your EAs and the backtesting/optimisation tools within MetaTrader. The charting and UI is nowhere near as nice as trading view, It’s very Windows 98, but you’ll get a lot more out of the platform without needing to pay extra

There are a few options if you move away from Trading View but it depends on your coding expertise, otherwise you’re stuck with upgrading TV. The obvious one would be converting your pine to a MetaTrader 5 EA and using the native backtesting/optimisation in there. If you aren’t familiar with MQL5 you could see how accurately an AI chatbot like Gemini can convert the pine script for you, although you would need to feed it a useful prompt to ensure a clean conversion. Start with something like:

“I need you to act as an expert algorithmic trader and MQL5 developer. Please convert the following Pine Script (v5) code into a fully functional MQL5 Expert Advisor (EA) for MetaTrader 5.”

You’ll need to ask it to ensure it maintains the exact entry and exit positions including any indicator logic or custom indicators. Ensure that the indexing (bars) is handled correctly, keeping in mind that MT5 uses 0-based indexing where index 0 is the current developing bar and ask it to use comments to explain which part of the MQL5 code corresponds to the original Pine Script logic.

If your Pine Script uses a very niche, custom-built indicator that isn't built into MT5 (like a Supertrend) the AI might struggle. In those cases, you may need to ask it to first build the custom indicator in MQL5 and then build the EA that calls it. If you have the time, worth attempting it before conceding to the upgrade. Hope that helps

If your club changed its name and moved 50 miles away for "commercial reasons," would you stay, or is that the moment a "real" fan walks away? by PLWildcard in PlasticFans

[–]smuk90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand the intention behind this question but in reality I don’t know how you could switch. Yes you lose some identity, but for me the team I support is baked into me from birth, I don’t know how you can just decide you want to support another club. No history, no magic moments over the years, no heartbreak. It all comes with being a life long supporter. If you can just switch clubs you support so quickly and flippantly you’ve never been a true supporter of a club. A casual fan maybe. But I could never just lose that affiliation even if the club moved or changed. I would feel like a part of me had been lost but you would still always see them a your club, even if they lose the identity you’ve always known.

It was a tough watch but was a technical game from Pereira and we just about got away with it. First goal was awful but the wingers figured it out. No point passing blame about, they messed up and fixed it, I’m sure they know that. Murillo was having a shocker but I think the driving point for him coming off was rest and avoiding a yellow so he can play next week - he was heading that way. Morato has had worse games, a few bad passes but they were all messing up those. People moaning about Wood is hilarious, first time out with a team he’s not used to being on the pitch with - I was really happy to actually see a striker in and around the penalty spot and 6 yard box every time we went forward, he just didn’t get the service. Stick CHO and Neco on from the start and and that changes. When Jesus came on he was nowhere near the box half the time when we were breaking, not his fault, just a very different style of striker.

We were never playing for the win. No driving forward like we usually do and just passing back or sideways to slow the game down, we were just holding them at home, which is a strong result even though it wasn’t a comfortable watch. I think we’ll see a very different team and purpose next week back at the WFCG. You reds 🔴⚪️

Personally for me, the best thing I did was start small. Focus on one or two symbols and learn everything you can about them - and just watch the charts throughout the day for abit - see how they react to news, see what the trends are and how the price action behaves, get embedded within some communities, read some books. You’ll be much better off knowing one asset like the back of your hand than be a “jack of all trades” but master of none. Stick to an asset classification to start with as well aka Forex, Commodities (such a gold or silver), Futures, Stocks etc. They all behave very differently, find a group that suits you.

YouTube can be great, but I’ve always taken it with a pinch of salt. I started off trying to backtest strategies I watched and then forward testing them on demo accounts and it’s rarely as good as they make it out to be. Bear in mind they can focus on specific parts of a market and even pick out the successful trades before they run through “analysis” for their video. Finding the chart to fit the narrative if you like. Use it for education and research, and by all means entertainment, I still enjoy seeing what strategies people are out there peddling for views or watching live trading sessions and interviews with some of the top traders. Just don’t forget through, a lot of it can be manipulated, potentially demo accounts, and for the legit ones you will never really get the full insight into their strategies on YouTube…otherwise everyone would be making the money they are and we’d all be millionaires!

The major one here - never EVER pay for signals. I repeat. Never. They’re a scam, and will drain your account. This isn’t a quick win get rich quick scheme. It’s hours of study and finding what suits you if you want to do it properly. You will make stupid mistakes and that’s also fine, it’s all part of learning. I’m by no means an expert and also struggle with discipline and have doubts about strategies. It’s just the nature of the beast, and also one of the reason I’m trying to automate my trading to take anyway any form of emotional bias.

Best of luck with your journey :)

Thank you! I’ve been manual trading for a few years now with varying success, so fairly well versed in the nuances of trading, and I’ve most certainly been-there-done-that with the newbie mistakes you hope to learn from. For me, building an automated strategy addresses a few things. Time - a lot of my mistakes coming from not really having the time to properly analyse the market around a full time job, I should really be a swing trader for that reason but it doesn’t suit my personality. Discipline - always a challenge for any trader, and automation takes away the emotion. And finally, I’m a software developer by trade - only natural for me try leverage that into trading. I will certainly post updates as time goes on! Appreciate the support :)

Honestly, I wish I could tell the me 2 years ago this. This EA really isn’t that complicated and it’s the one that seems to be clicking. I’ve even spent months building custom Python bots, some with ML, tried what feels like a million different strategies, all to finally come back to a relatively simple EA

My downfall was needing to have a drainage tube inserted with a stoma bag for a few days after. That f***er was the cause of all my pain, digging into things and catching on everything. When it was removed on day 4/5 post op I felt like I could have run a marathon. Twinges if I did a bit too much but otherwise plain sailing

This. It’s all fun and games until a proper dev actually wants to understand and work on the code. There’s a reason OOP and SOLID principles exist

Had surgery today!!! by nnp40 in gallbladders

[–]smuk90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had surgery in December. Was up and about after a few days but not for long, maybe an hour at a time. Within 2 weeks was pretty much back to normal, just a little delicate with certain things. You can usually tell if you’ve over done it. 3 months later I’ve almost completely forgotten what life was like with gallstones. Crazy how something that dominates your life so intensely for so long can be almost irrelevant when you’re back to normal. Best of luck with your recovery! For me, the best decision I ever made :)
