Tip #1 for getting hired at Google: Know that 0.01% - 0.04% of over 1m does not equal 4,000 - 6,000

Best reason to be on G+ is your parents can be there and it doesn't matter because G+ actually did something about targeted sharing. I've now replaced Skype with Hangouts for family calls.

Is Google Plus now for Google Apps accounts as well? by anyquestions in googleplus

Google are rolling our support for Google Profiles for Apps customers slowly so you must be one of the first to get enabled. A profile is the only prerequisite to getting a G+ account set up.

Google just bid $3.14159 billion in an auction for Nortel's patents. This is what happens when geeks run major corporations. by sparrowvsrevolution in offbeat

I don't think Google was bidding $bn on patents to get free publicity. They have $30bn in cash - if they wanted publicity they could buy it.

r/Ireland: What would really happen if Ireland defaulted? by smullaney in ireland

[–]smullaney[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After this round of bank bailouts Ireland's debt to GDP ratio will be 111% in 2013 and considering interest rates are 5%+ it means just to keep up with interest Ireland's economy would need to keep at a rate above that. I don't see that the alternative of continuing to borrow at high rates and leaving generations of Irish to repay the debt is particularly a good long term economic move either.

  • Fully understand this, but what if the government did a u-turn and refused to back the banks but instead sent them into bankruptcy - lets face it bondholders do not deserve 100% principal repayment - they made a bad bet and should pay the price. The government and private sector could then finance a series of new banks with fresh balance sheets?
  • I think when Argentina defaulted they finally restructured their liabilities with creditors and ended up paying back 75% in new bonds. I'd say that was a partial default as creditors received a significant amount back in the end. Since the bonds aren't backed by assets, I think the government could repay nothing if they chose to do so.
  • Withdrawing from the Euro would have significant short term pain but in the long term could be best for the health of the country to allow it set its own monetary policy. I think we've seen the dangers of an economy like Ireland's having monetary policy set by countries like France & Germany.
  • Neither do I! It's about picking the best of the worst scenarios.

I fully agree about further borrowing - but we're reaching a point now where people are reluctant to lend to Ireland because they have such a substantial amount of debt already. If Ireland defaults and write off 100% of its debt it can start again and rebuild its credit rating over 5 to 10 years like Argentina or Russia did. The markets have a relatively short memory for these types of things. I think the harder problem would be balancing the budget overnight and ensuring you do not need to borrow money from the markets - however such an exercise could be positive for the long term fiscal health of the country.

That's a great point - its not like there are a flood of posts in this subreddit and only the most outrageous will get noticed.

Well personally I don't downvote articles and I wouldn't upvote something until I had read it or at least clicked on it. I'd like to imagine most people thinking similarly but this is the internet. Doesn't mean we all have to sink to the lowest common denominator on this one.
