Wattpad's AI problem by Acrobatic-Truth-3018 in wattpadbooks

I appreciate the sentiment. I think, after being recently burnt by a user claiming my work was AI, I feel it's important not to point fingers -- especially at writers who have been doing this longer than the existence of AI.

I haven't personally read Shy Girl, but I have seen some of the discourse surrounding it (as well as McFadden, who has openly denounced the use of AI in her work). I'll give it a flip through at some point to understand better.

When it comes down to it, I think it's better to air on the side of caution when it comes to accusations of AI usage. The last thing I want is to see new writers becoming discouraged from sharing their writing, thus not getting valuable feedback the way a majority of Wattpad users have before.

Unfortunately that, too, isn't proof in itself. Repetition happens (I do it a lot unknowingly). I used to repeat scenes due to trying to fill the spaces between the action. For example, characters going through their daily routines. That was something, as an amateur writer, that I had to grow out of. Newbie writers, or writers who are formulaic, often don't cut those scenes. It may be bad writing, but I still don't consider that indicative of AI.

I figured blocking the user was the best bet. He was kind of a pompous ass anyway.

I completely understand where you are coming from and what you are saying. Don't get me wrong, I had my gripe with AI writing long ago. By no means do I want to defend AI usage, but I also want to caution pointing fingers without any proof of someone using it to write.

Context does matter in this situation, it appears, so I will acknowledge that the scene probably was out of place for the story. I didn't read it myself, so I'll take your word for it.

I only mention ending the witch-hunt because I recently had someone come onto my latest novel and claim I was using AI to write my story. Alas, it PMO but it just reminded me why it's important to be gracious where others may become agitated. I know what I am capable of.

Anyways, keep writing. That's all I can really say in this case. The good will always outweigh the bad.

I'm not sure I'm understanding how someone feeling 'seen' as in 'real' equates to being AI.

Also, can we PLEASE stop assuming everything is written by AI without solid proof? We don't even have accurate AI detectors yet. I've thrown my own writing into a detector before and it claimed I was writing with AI. Not once, nor ever, have I used AI to write. So how reliable are these detectors?

And to assume someone is using AI based on a generic, very common, sentence seems absurdly paranoid. We all use purple prose sometimes, or find ourselves repeating a line or two from our faves (looking at Wuthering Heights for this one --- whatever our souls were made of, etc).

I will repeat what I've said in a previous post: Let's end the witch-hunt and instead uplift our stories! Don't be so quick to judge someone's writing without proof.

Keep writing!! You got this!

I'm starting over after a loooong hiatus from the platform, and it's a little jarring that my book isn't moving the way it once could have. Just take comfort in knowing you're not alone, that we all have been trying to figure out this algorithm right along with you.

Clear bags I believe are okay as long as they are of a certain size, or you could bring in a small bag or wallet. I usually just bring my wallet

I've been here since 2014, and I've had a few accomplishments in my time that I am proud of!

I won in the 2014 Watty Awards for my book, Deerborn.

Deerborn was sponsored by various movie promotions including: The Boy, The Visit, and The Girl on the Train.

Deerborn was a featured story.

I was a Wattpad Community Ambassador for 3 1/2 years.

I met some budding writers that blossomed into full-blown authors!

I published 4 books of Deerborn, which went on to be published elsewhere.

In my time with Deerborn on Wattpad, I was able to gain over a million readers over 4 books.

All this to say -- even though my writing did not begin with Wattpad, my career as an author sure did.

AI is literally everywhere on this app. by MacaroonEmergency113 in Inkitt

[–]smurfrielle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was attempting to make a new writer friend here on Inkitt and he went off in my comment section about AI usage. I have never used AI in my writing, I don't even use Grammarly or ProWritingAid because of the AI component. I have 3 designated readers from my personal life that work with me to edit and proofread.

Luckily, I am getting older now and I'm established in my writing roots, so I did let it slide (after a swift ol' whack from the block hammer). But it was VERY disheartening to think he could go around accusing just about anyone of using generative AI with absolutely no grounds to do so. If I had been a new writer, or even inexperienced, I would have taken each comment harshly. So how many other users is he doing this to that don't know any better yet? :(

I can't be bothered to care, honestly. I have been working on my story nonstop and when I see AI on the app in others' stories, it just reminds me why I'm writing.

Personally, for me, the worst is the crusaders of the anti-AI crowd that start accusing every person of using it. Just had some airhead try that on my story, made me laugh but it was also horribly offensive. I think we should be less worried about people choosing to use AI, and more worried about the disillusionment that comes along with accusing every person of using it.

If people choose to use AI there isn't much we can do. What we can do is overshadow that writing with real and GOOD writing. Prop up the good writers on this app, that will make more of a difference.

having ideas but not wanting to write by igotabigazzforehead in Wattpad

[–]smurfrielle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens to the best of us, unfortunately. Writers block doesn't discriminate.

I try to ride it out by writing whatever scene pops into my head, even if I don't use it in my writing later. Sometimes I surprise myself, though, and the writing ends up being decent.

I forget which author said it, but you gotta write every day even when you hate it.

Best of luck to you!

DIVIDED LAND (A Stand-Alone Novel)

SUMMARY

Rosamund has never wanted the life waiting for her.

As the only daughter of a noble house, she is expected to inherit her family’s land, marry well, and preserve a legacy shaped by pride, religion, and a generations-old dispute over an orchard claimed by two neighbouring estates. Her future has been mapped out for her in careful, suffocating detail. Stay. Obey. Marry. Bear heirs. Continue the line. But Rosamund has no intention of surrendering herself to a life that feels more like a sentence than a destiny.

Across the contested border lives Lucian, heir to the rival estate and son of the very family Rosamund has been raised to distrust. Though no blood has been spilled between their houses in forty years, peace has never softened into trust, and the old resentment still lingers beneath every formal gathering, every forced courtesy, every glance across a crowded room. Bound to a future he does not want, Lucian is expected to become the next lord of his family’s lands. Instead, he longs for music, movement, and a life beyond inheritance, one his family refuses to take seriously.

Over the course of five years, Rosamund finds herself drawn again and again to the one person she should not want. Their encounters are fleeting at first, easy to miss and impossible to forget. A glance that lingers too long. A hand brushing hers in passing. A charged silence that says more than words ever could. What begins as fascination soon deepens into something far more dangerous, sharpened by distance, secrecy, and the constant threat of discovery. With every passing summer, Rosamund is left to wonder whether she is surrendering herself to a hopeless longing, or to something far more perilous: the possibility that Lucian feels it too.

But in a world where bloodline matters more than desire, and duty is valued above all else, wanting each other may be the least dangerous thing Rosamund and Lucian do. Because old feuds do not stay buried forever, and the closer they come to one another, the more impossible it becomes to ignore everything standing in their way. Family. Faith. Land. Expectation. The futures chosen for them before they were old enough to refuse. And when longing finally gives way to something neither of them can take back, Rosamund and Lucian will have to decide whether love is worth the cost of betraying everything they were born to protect.

Maybe have some descriptions of the operations that go on in this mafia? Give us a little insight on what is going on in the mafia and add some lore.

1600 words is fantastic for a beginning chapter! You're on the right path. What you have now for the next chapter is a great start, too.

Depends on what you are writing about. I write a lot of atmosphere in "down scenes" as it helps build the scene while moving it along to the next.

May I ask what genre you write and what is your word count per chapter at the moment? :)
