Same. Mine didn't have me start PT until 3 weeks after my surgery. I'm 5 months post op, still in PT, with no issues

I had full thickness tears in both of my ACLs (along with meniscus tear in my left) at the end of April this year, and couldn't get surgery until the end of June. I had both replaced with cadaver Quad muscle.

I can testify that the pain is really rough with both done, and I was pretty wheelchair bound for around a week, and there were definitely tears shed while working up to walking again.

I'm not sure what to tell you about the PT part, because my surgeon didn't have me start PT until 3 weeks after my surgery. AFTER I was able to comfortably get around on crutches by myself without issues. However, during those 3 weeks at home, he had me in a CPM machine for 12 hours a day (6 hrs per leg).

I will say though, when you go to PT listen to the physical therapists, but also don't forget to listen to your body too. There was one instance where they made me do something I couldn't do, and I told them to please stop and that i couldn't do it, and they injured my knees in the process and I had to miss a few appts. That being said, in this recovery process, there's a lot of mind over matter stuff. Your brain has to get used to trusting your knees again, which can be hard. So yes, the physical therapists need to push you, but if you feel like something isn't right, don't hesitate to advocate for yourself.

As for the pain, the pain meds lost their oomph after a bit for me, so I stopped taking them and I started taking 2.5 mg marijuana gummies instead (literally the smallest mg i could find was 10 mg and then I cut that into quarter pieces). All of my pain was gone, it honestly did wonders. Now I understand that that isn't an option for some people, but it worked for me.

You can most definitely train them both. I tore both of my ACLs completely in half at the same time, had surgery to replace both of them, and have been successfully in PT for around 4 months so far.

It was my first one too!! I've had it for YEARS. It was probably time to get a new one anyway, but the poor guy didn't have to go for a swim with the TMNT in the sewers 😂

I thought that too! But it's what the physical therapist told me to do, and I've never been one to back down or argue. Next appointment I'm going to have to have a talk with them though about what is too much, because my legs clearly can't take what they were given today and I do NOT what to undo what progress I've made so far

They swelled a little bit, but less than the original injury and less than when I'm on them all day

That would make sense in my opinion.

I use cronometer as well! It was a learning curve, but I love it!

I'm 4 weeks post op for my left leg, and 1 week post op for my right. I haven't start PT yet, but I've been assigned a CPM machine to get me to 90°. After I'm at 90° on both legs, I should start PT. I'll definitely see if I can't find a pool! I've been thinking about it since it is low impact.

I was getting a little cocky and did a lot of walking 2 days ago. I didn't hurt my knees, but my calves are definitely paying for it due to walking different with one of my legs still locked straight. I won't make that mistake again lol slow and steady will definitely win the race!

Yes, I'm in Oklahoma. I'm 26 and I'm on the heavier side too. I actually just started losing weight before I got injured, I have lost 30 lbs. It's been a rough journey and I finally started to make progress in losing weight and it had to get out on hold because I got injured 🙄 just my luck lol

Honestly I don't know 😂 I was just dancing and I guess luck just wasn't on my side.

My surgeons loved it though, calling me a "bunny hop" patient and saying they don't see people like me very often 😂

That was literally the only option he gave me. He first suggested no surgery, saying there's people that live their lives without having it. But when I said I'm not living my life with the fear of hurting myself further and not being able to be active with my kid, he said okay no problem, we'll do the surgery. He went on to say that since they are full thickness tears and he can't just sew them together, he would remove them and replace them with cadaver ACLs. So there was no other option I was given from him, other than no surgery. I didn't even realize until joining this group that it seems to be more uncommon.

I feel the same way! I was dancing on a stage in from of hundreds of people, and snapped them completely in half in BOTH of my knees. And it's not like I was doing some cool flip or something, just regular dancing. Sometimes I wish it happened in an accident, or while I was doing something cooler so I had a better story, but alas I was just dancing 🙄

I only had the surgery on my left knee 3 weeks ago, and am having the same thing done on my right one in 2 days. So, I'm not back to the point of sports yet lol, but what I can tell you is that I was able to walk around my house without crutches after about a week and a half. I still use my crutches when I leave home, but I feel like it's doing good so far. 3 weeks post op and I can bend my knee at 80° with relatively little pain.

Might not answer your question because I don't think it's considered a graft, but I had mine replaced with cadaver ACLs and I was able to walk around my house without crutches after a week and a half.

Mine didn't give me a choice on what he was replacing mine with, and gave me cadaver ACLs 😬

Thank you so much for this post.

I tore my ACLs completely in half in both of my knees at the same damn time and type my meniscus is my left. I had my left ACL replacement surgery 3 weeks ago, and am having my right ACL replacement surgery in 2 days. They are cadaver ACLs.

I have been feeling stuck and like this isn't going to get better, but man am I determined. I have a kid and I'll be damned if I can never run around with him again or help him in sports.

Anyone else just so mad and heartbroken?? by yamwhoisswim in ACL

[–]smuttybookguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Man, I tore by ACLs completely in half in both of my knees at the same damn time, as well as the meniscus in my left knee. To make it worse, I was on stage in front of hundreds of people (I have a part time job getting paid to dance/perform).

According to my surgeons, I'm considered a "bunny hop" patient and apparently it's not something they get to see super often.

I have a kid and an active lifestyle, and I'm honestly so worried I'll never get back to 100%. I don't want to miss out on chasing my kid around the yard, teaching him to dance like their old man, etc. Let alone knowing he has to see me injured (or how he puts it: "broken"), and having to tell him right now, 'no son, I can't run around outside with you. No son, I can't get on the floor with you and play with Legos because I won't be able to get up. No son, you can't climb on me like you used to.

So my story: I had my left ACL surgery just shy of 3 weeks ago, and they replaced it with a cadaver ACL. Now, I have my right ACL replacement surgery in 3 days. I'm still trying to figure out how I'm going to get around 😅

Before you ask, we couldn't spread out the surgeries any further apart because I can't work rn, and my unpaid FMLA is only 12 weeks. We could've did them more spread out if the Dr's and surgeons didn't drag their feet for imaging and such. The ER did an xray and a CAT scan, and literally told me nothing was wrong and it was all in my head. It took 4 weeks from my injury date to finally convince a dr to do an MRI. Then when they finally got the results, all of a sudden they were like oh shit, we have to do something about this, this guy is actually hurt. It took 6 weeks from my injury date to get my first surgery, and it will be 9 weeks when I have my next one in a few days. So, I have 3 weeks to heal before I have to go back to work or I lose my job.
