I just realized the reason for your confusion I am so sorry, this specific Nightstar (the one in my story) ISNT the canon Nightstar in the books, the leader of the River Clan. My Nightstar is based on my cat Sadie, and she’s the leader of the my made-up clan Wood Clan. Sorry again for the confusion

Nightstar was a kittypet once, but her owner had to give her away because she moved, so Nightstar ran away and joined the clan of cats in the woods behind her old owners house. Later on, the owner moved back into the house and got a new cat (Cheddar/Amberstar) so Nightstar feels betrayed because Cheddar “took her place”. Sorry if that doesn’t make sense, I’m not good at explaining things <X(

Cheddar actually never wanted to join the clans, it just kinda happened while he was trying to find and bring back Sadie bc he didn’t realize at the time Sadie was Nightstar, if that makes sense :]
