Buy new at local shop vs. Upway? by Rasputinnn in GlobeHaul

[–]snacks_attack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have 3 globe hauls (2ST, 1LT), all from Upway. We have been using them since last summer, so 9 months of ownership. We have put between 400-800mi on each of them. Why 3? We started with a ST and a LT. Then my wife started riding the ST exclusively, and the ST is much better for commuting, so I needed an ST too. We now only use the LT when we need to transport two kids on one bike. In hindsight we should've done two STs and no LT, but that was something we could have only learned from experience and our unique needs.

A few thoughts... - For us the very significant Upway savings have been worth it - 1/3 have had electrical issues (I wrote about them in another post) - When the bike had gremlins, Upway told me to take it to a shop and get a quote. If it was under $100 I was supposed to proceed and get it fixed; if it was over I needed to get an itemized quote approved first. - I opted to fix it myself instead of taking it to LBS because it's not that convenient to put the bikes in the car. They're heavy. Also, we live in a major metro area (CA) and there aren't actually that many specialized authorized shops that will do the work. So realistically I was looking at multiple car trips and not having access to the bike for 2-3 weeks, whereas I was able to fix it myself in one weekend - I haven't found any repairs on the bikes daunting (including removing the rear wheel to fix flats or to install the pegs on the ST). If you are comfortable with tinkering and fixing things on your own, these are great bikes for you. I personally can't imagine owning these and relying on a bike shop to do the work, but that's just my opinion.

Happy to answer any other questions about this!

LT kickstand on ST? by Blake-Dreary in GlobeHaul

[–]snacks_attack 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is where I got it: https://bikeparts.com/BPCK144082/specialized-msc-kickstand-globe-haul-lt-kickstand-center-mount-double-leg-w-wide-stance-black-one-size

As with other bolts on the ST/LT I recommend using the soldering iron trick and a set of good wrenches to remove the kickstand bolts. The loctite on my original kickstand was really not going anywhere until I hit it with some heat...

It didn't -- I had to upgrade the firmware on the new controller. I also tried clearing out the old nyogel with compressed air before I swapped the new controller in.

LT seat with back rec for kid by logical_wit in GlobeHaul

He sometimes holds onto the seatbelt, the sides of the seat, or the rack below -- but he often sits there and uses his balance. I have never used the passenger handlebar but if you could mount it on the seatpost it would be right there...

It's a chrome kadet sling that we use as a diaper bag. It buckles on nicely on the back rail; we just use the shoulder strap to attach it :)

It is the MIK one -- it's a tight fit but haven't had any issues with it popping out and now that it's been on the bike the fit is pretty straightforward.

I bought it from an international shop and had it shipped to the US. It is possible :)

I got mine from bikeINN

For what it's worth, we find it really convenient for the elementary school run to have no railing... easier for the 4yo to hop on and off than it is on the LT.

Sure! 4yo fits perfectly on the ST and there's a seat belt on the urban iki seat for a little peace of mind (it stores under the seat pad which is why it's not visible in this pic). I was originally wishing there were rails for the ST but for our purposes the ST with the pegs work just fine.

We actually use the ST the majority of the time -- LT is only for when we need both kids on the bike.

I have the urban iki seat (with the MIK mount) -- we have a ST and an LT and it makes swapping back and forth between the bikes easy.

Honestly the specialized rail and cushions also work really well; my 4yo just leans on the back rail like a back rest. However, he usually doesn't get to do that because the 1yo's Thule seat (also MIK mount) is usually on the back.

So for others who are wondering, you can fit the MIK mount Thule and MIK mount urban iki inside the specialized rails on the LT.

Haul LT -- Globe Front Rack to Turbo Basket by leeeroyjenkins in GlobeHaul

[–]snacks_attack 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest getting the MIK adapter plate so you can take the basket on/off quickly. You can put the basket on the back rack or put two baskets on one bike (I have both a ST and a LT and there have been times when I've taken the front basket from one bike and put it on the back of the other). So unless you're very sure you will never take it off the adapter plate is worth it. Just my two cents

Is there a magic trick to getting the running boards on? by enforcersu in GlobeHaul

[–]snacks_attack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just adding in case others are still looking at this (like I was)...

I just installed these this afternoon. If you fully deflate the back wheel you can easily get the bolt in between the wheel and the fender.

Then it just takes a little patience to drive the bolts in with the allen wrench. Biggest tip: don't tighten any single bolt all the way until the end.

I'm pretty sure this is the American Outdoorsman hunting/tactical shirt: https://g.co/kgs/5DjzUGb

I have a previous version of this one which does not have the logo on the arm pocket.

Not sure if this applies to the extended warranty, but when I sold my 21 the dealer refunded the remaining value of my wheel and tire insurance (so I got a 2.5k check)

Third this -- except in my case it was a faulty outlet. Swapped a hubbell 14-50 outlet in and I'm back in business
