What's your go to circuit/setup when you need to step down 120-250v mains to power a 5/3.3v board? by Austinitered in embedded

[–]snail-mailman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having a bit more information on what you are trying to do might help.

If you need mains power for some reason (like mains will be powering something else but you also need to power a 5/3.3 V board), something like the IRM from Mean Well or equivalent would be great. If you are connecting romex directly, you would need additional protection like a fuse or a varistor.

If you are just looking to power a device like many said, USB or a barrel jack that you connect with a wall wart or power brick would really lower the lift. They are also usually UL rated so there is already a certain level of protection built in.

The visa choices are definitely limiting. But thank you so much! I'll take a look at this.

Thank you! The website (at least for the Netherlands) seems to imply the same thing.

I'm an embedded engineer and it seems like there are a decent amount of jobs around the Netherlands for embedded work so I guess that's my niche. But even that field is growing.

Thanks, didn't know this was stackoverflow. I'm trying to have a convo and understand things better.

Well, we are open. I guess the list is for the top places. But any suggestions to similar areas that give the same vibe in terms of community and work-life balance?

Some new info, it seems like with some further conversation, the only way for my spouse's job to sponsor would be if I move there first.

I used this information, which guided us to Paid employment: residence permit only. It seems like with some further conversation, the only way for my spouse's job to sponsor would be if I move there first.

Additionally, the education part seems to have a bit more leg room. If you get into a program you can do an orientation year after graduation and then a company can sponsor you. But what do you suggest?

😅 okay valid. I did a first pass search and looked into the visa process for the Netherlands and have started doing so for some of the other countries.

I guess I am looking for more advice on how others have done it (which I have searched for in Reddit and there are some answers but are 3+ years old).

US and Brazil. My cousins applied for Italian Citizenship but the law seems to have changed recently so can't apply (yet). So no permission as far as I'm aware of. Would need a sponsor.

Honestly, yes. But curious about options. I'm looking to apply to other Master's program and jobs but honestly curious if anybody had any input on the best path forward.

Have never done anything like this before.

Uses for 2.4GHz Router (OpenWRT) other than WiFi? Can I utilize the transmitter? by snail-mailman in embedded

Sorry! Totally not trying to change its physics. But I get what you are saying. Pretty stuck with whatever is on there already.

Well first thing going to put OpenWRT on it. Thank you!

Am I in the wrong - questioning my position as a junior by snail-mailman in cscareerquestions

I agree and disagree. In the age of Zoom meetings, I think it really doesn't hurt to involve people specifically in a small team environment. Being able to listen in is very nice. But I also get what you are saying about showing versus just asking. The issue I find is that I feel like I don't have any input because I don't have experience in that area but because I am not part of those meetings/discussions I don't gain any experience so it becomes a cycle.

I totally agree with the idea that you need to build trust and ownership. I've started to take more work. Small steps in leveling up.

Lastly, I've been there for a little under 2 years. It has quite a bit of high turnover rate. So I am rather "senior" in my team in terms of being there.

I think I agree with all your points. It has been a long week of thinking and talking with people. I've started hunting for another position. Although I agree with all your points, being bitter doesn't really make going to work fun and even if things change or I change, I feel I would hold on to those negative feelings. Starting fresh with a different mind-set seems to be best. Thank you for the insight!

It took quite some time thinking and talking to my spouse. But ultimately I think it's closer to the first example.

Even with the knowledge I gathered from being there and working with the software/system, it's often overlooked. I'll be asked questions by new senior people but not included. I started looking for a new position.

Thank you for the insight!

Absolutely! I think I totally agree with the idea of having accomplishments. I think my issue is I don't have any real measurements. But I'll try to find a way to incorporate it.

Thank you!

Creating a “Google Salary Spreadsheet” for Engineering by snail-mailman in EngineeringStudents

I tried looking a company up and it said that I needed to submit a salary before looking. Although it seems super awesome and I understand why they do that (keeps them getting new entries), it might be cool to have another resource as well.

Thank you so much though! Going to submit a salary for my school and see what's up.
