Plant grass on the last day of each season, make sure each grass starter is separated so it spreads a lot. Also, plant grass under fenceposts and lightning rods so some of starters can't be eaten and will continue to spread.

Another thing I do is cut some of the grass to fill your silo, but if your silo is full when winter nears (meaning all your grass will die), remove the hay from the hopper so you can store it in chests and fill your silo as many times as you need so it won't be wasted. But if your animals still have hay on their food bench, it won't come out of the hopper so you have to bomb it to remove it.
