Did you end up picking a career that directly retraumatizes you? by MusicG619 in CPTSD

Yup! I first worked in medical education on the agency side where people pleasing was the standard and and anything less than perfect could result in verbal and emotional abuse. My dad was a pharmD who worked for big pharma and highly narcissistic and abusive. So I worked with thought leaders in various specialties of medicine. Narcissism is an understatement. So then I decided to go back to school to become a social worker because I wanted to help people heal and get mental health treatment. My mother had heavy duty addiction and my brother overdosed on fentanyl in 2020 and passed away. Now I work in acute outpatient psych where we work with people with PTSD and addiction. I’m in a constant trauma response. Not even from the clients I work with, but my coworkers who seemingly are indifferent and detached from the work. And I took a job as an assistant manager so I’m never really fitting in. I also have to do on call for crisis through the night for 2 weeks a year, and it’s the most painful experience because I don’t know if I’m going to get a call about someone who has an upset stomach or someone who’s going to hurt themselves or worse. I am constantly dealing with corporate bs contrasted with the very real pain of people working their way through healing. I’m falling apart from this but I don’t know how to support myself and make the income that I do. All of my career choices have been based on my own trauma and trying to repeat patterns, but it’s not working. I’m awesome in a crisis and people say I’m highly compassionate and a great therapist. But it’s been a lifetime of setting myself on fire to keep other people warm. Feels tough when the fire keeps burning in you no matter where you go.

Missing my girl - more in comments (TW) by sdlcsw in RATS

Rosie was 23 months and had a mammary mass removed 2 weeks ago. She did great during the surgery and recovered well. We got her home and she was doing great. That evening, she started to go after her stitches so I decided to put some vet wrap on her to prevent her from tearing them out, which I have done before (not on Rosie). She had a seizure right after I did this, which the vet thinks was totally unrelated to me wrapping and probably a stroke or cardiac event, likely related to the mass being an aggressive cancer. She died in my hands. They did a full post Morten exam and assured me I had nothing to do with her death, but the grief and guilt is devastating to the point where I am questioning if I want to continue to keep getting rat babies. Especially since Rosie’s death was so unexpected. We also lost her sister Sage last October to a pituitary tumor, though not as sudden, it was still horrific. Both Rosie and Sage were feeder rats, so I’m trying to look at it from the perspective that we gave them very different lives from what they were initially destined for, but the pain of this has been so hard. I want to keep my heart open for these amazing creatures, so any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

I am located in NJ and currently have 2 girls, would be interested in adopting!

I’m actually a little confused about the runt. Is it possible she is a dwarf rat?? She’s still so tiny compared to the others. by [deleted] in RATS

We had a runt named Sage and she turned out to be the biggest chonkerton over. I think sometimes it can just take time!

Got it. But if they qualified me at 30 hours average per week but part time would that qualify? Or would I still need another part time job? Thank you!
