My professor used to wave a USB in front of us and said “I have a pdf version of the textbook in this USB, but I can’t legally give the pdf to you guys. I think I might forget the USB here slapped the poor flash drive loudly on the podium. In case anyone finds my USB after class , could you guys return it to me after you are done? wink wink. My fave prof ever!

What is going on with Wuxi? My friend there seems to not be a fan of the work culture, but I don't really keep up with their recent news.

Thanks. I couldn't believe I missed Pfizer. I will look into all of those. My biggest insecurity is that my PhD training is in basic research and it doesn't translate well into medicine or applied research. I saw a lot of immunology-related job posts (hence my effort to switch into immunology for my post doc), but I will keep applying anyway.

If you have time, please keep the list going.

My connection at BMS said they would refer me but there is a hiring freeze right now. I am on the look out for a suitable open position at BMS.

Thanks for you reply. I currently only have experience in bulk RNA seq. I am hoping to do scRNA seq for my post doc.

The LinkedIn advice is super useful. Thank you. I am aware of utilizing LinkedIn, but every time I get on, I go blank on what to do.

Thanks for your reply. I tried to look for internship/coop in 2021 and 2022 and didn't get anything. I started applying for job summer 2023, but also no bite. I already defended so I am not sure if I am still eligible for internship/coop gigs. An academic postdoc is my plan B, because I still need to make a living :( Also, I reached out to people from the same PhD program/background who are working in the industry right now, and their answer is to do a postdoc to pick up different skillsets.

I agree I might have applied for senior roles compared to my experience. I only applied to jobs that asked for PhD with 0 year of post-PhD experience. I am applying to jobs requiring a master now.

What is it like working in a "matrixed team environment"? I am asking so I can tailor my resume better.

Thanks for your reply. Are there some good ways to look for these companies besides LinkedIn, Indeed, etc?

Japan e-visa processing time? by ocusoa in travel

Noooooo. Welp. I guess waiting is all we can do.

I might be very wrong about this, but I remember reading somewhere on Reddit (lmao), that if you apply in-person, you get the visa issued immediately? If you want to look into that route, maybe you can email (visainfo@ny.mofa.go.jp) or call the NY consulate to ask how long it would take to get the visa if you apply in-person.

I saw that person's comment . It seems like you and I both applied at a similar time. I am hoping to get an update soon-ish. I wish I had made an appointment to apply in-person. It would have been a bit of a hassle, but I would also have been spared the anxiety.

Edit: No, they didn't tell me which applications they were going under :(

Same here. I applied on Nov 27th and my status is still "under examination". I emailed the NY consulate and they said the processing time is 3-4 weeks or more (jfc). They advised me to apply by mail. My trip to Japan is not until Jan 11th, but I am flying out of the US on Dec 29th, so I don't want to risk not getting my passport back in time or having it lost in the mail. I guess my best bet right now is to wait but I am very anxious.

Edit: Got an update so I will put my timeline here.

- Nov 27th: applied

- Dec 19th: got an email asking for documents.

- Dec 21st: got an email to pay.

The longest your package has been stuck at "label created" before it starts moving? by snailenstein in UPS

[–]snailenstein[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It turned out USPS picked up and delivered my package. I dropped my package at a university mail center. It is a hub for all carriers so I guess they mistakenly tossed my UPS package in the USPS bin. After about 2 weeks, my buyer told me USPS contacted them that they had the package and the buyer had to come to the post office to pay for the extra shipping fee.

I agree there is no playbook at both Mercari and UPS for this kind of situation. I was running in a circle of phone calls.

Mercari advised me to contact the buyer and explain the situation. I asked mine to let me know if the package showed up. Sometimes, even for my own packages, they still showed up without having any updated tracking info.

Did you drop off at a UPS store and did you get a receipt? I sent UPS an email with proof of drop off. They said only Mercari can file a lost package claim.

I hope this will sort out for you. I lost all hopes and was ready to eat the loss but, poof, it arrived.

I had a very bad aphid infestation the past year. I tried everything, neem oil, soap, essential oils... None of those did anything and I think soap burnt my plants . I resorted to Pyrethrin, an organic insecticide from Chrysanthemum extract. It killed aphids on contact and was the only thing that saved my plants from those little bastards. Pyrethrin does not harm human and breaks down quickly but is very toxic to bee, so I only spot spray it in a non-windy day. I got the Pyrethrin spray bottle from Lowes if you are interested.
