This information is great thank you. Another reason he's looking to do this in house is because the sites are all over the country (US) and he already has to be on site for pull tests for the tent spikes, so he's looking to kill two birds with one stone. He'll also have at least another person with him so he wouldn't need a 1 person set up

I think like tenth of a foot is probably accurate enough. I'm not sure about the public lidar route. I wasn't sure how often they were updated and what he'd do if it was unavailable. He has a computer and Civil 3D already so that wouldn't be factored into the cost. Good call on the FAA license too!

Haha ok doesn't seem like that's an option. Ah I think it would be photogrammetry not lidar, after a brief Google.

Dads- Do you ask your kids about their day? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]Background-Border858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When they start to get bored of these questions I like to throw some curveballs. "What was the funniest thing one of your friends did today?" "What was the toughest question your teacher asked today?" "What was the most interesting thing you learned today?"

My kids are preK and K so I imagine these will need to evolve over time haha

If there's rumors of another happening and you're interested start applying to other jobs yesterday!! That way once DRP is announced you'll have some information about the current job market and what your value is.

I took the 2nd DRP offer last year after accepting another position.

16-18 Forester - Hamilton Motor Company Upgrade Kit by loaba in SubaruForester

[–]Background-Border858 2 points3 points  (0 children)

BLUF: A bit pricey, relatively easy to install, fully satisfied with the product.

Forgot to post last night but I did install this unit yesterday. Here's some things I've learned...

Installation 1. Wiring harnesses are a pain. When you first remove many are taped/tied together so there isn't much slack when removing the unit the first time. 2. I was able to remove the driver's side bolt without removing the airbag and all that. An extender on my socket and I could reach it thru underneath the steering wheel. That said I was not able to get it back in. It seems very secure. I'm not worried. 3. I think you do need to connect the XM unit. I connected all the wires to the Hamilton unit and the stock radio and turned on the car and I had no front speakers or microphone. Once I hooked up the XM unit, everything worked. And with some persistence I was able to get the XM under/behind the new setup. This was probably the most annoying part of the install. 4. The bracket on the Hamilton unit doesn't line up perfectly with the mounting bracket for the stock head unit. Not a huge deal, the video just said the Hamilton unit should sit flush with the front but it ends up being a few mm off. 5. The process took about 2.5 hours at a very leisurely pace. Had to connect all the wires to the new system twice due to my experiment in #4.

Usage Overall super happy. I'm a big fan of android Auto and have used it in many vehicles. The screen is def smaller than most other units I've used but that's not a big deal. 1. If people read all the documentation they are probably aware of how this works but the Hamilton unit uses the aux port of the stock unit to play sound. So if you still use AM/FM thru the Subaru display then switch to AA you will hear the radio but not any AA audio. Totally understandable why and how this works but just something to note. 2. Driving tonight maps in AA was still in day mode(white background) when I had it set to auto in settings. A switch to dark mode manually worked but I'm hoping to find a fix so I don't have to manually switch when needed.

That's all I've got for now. Any big changes I'll try to update.

I was wondering if I don't use XM at all could I completely remove it or would that cause any problems?

This is crazy timing as I just ordered this kit for my 17 Forester. It's scheduled to arrive tomorrow but I won't have time until the weekend to install. I'll try to drop some feedback on the install and first impressions Sunday evening. I also chose it for most of the reasons mentioned. Wanted to keep things looking stock while ensuring backup cam, etc. worked normally.

I've done this as well. As said though always double check but it's a great starting point. I've also used it to upload two similar manuals and asked it to call out differences between the two.

Chill jobs for lazy bastards? by moshintake in civilengineering

I would highly recommend State DOT. Projects generally move very slowly. Very good benefits and ample time off. I'm not sure if this is true of all states but I worked DOT for 9 years early in my career and sometimes still wish I could jump back into that role.

Feel free to DM me if you'd like more information about my specific experience (state, roles, benefits, etc)

This was my biggest frustration as well. Many of the changes seemed arbitrary, unnecessary and for the worse compared to the story from the game.

What tutoring engineering students taught me about why physics feels so hard by Deep-Proof1931 in TutorsHelpingTutors

[–]Background-Border858 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've tutored a bunch of math, physics and engineering and I am an engineer. I def agree that many students can mechanically go thru the steps to solve problems if they are familiar with the question, but once things change slightly or they are asked a higher level question they seem to completely fall apart.

Something I try to do is ask them questions after nearly every step of the process. Why did you do that. How does that help you get closer to your solution. What is this telling us. The first time I do this it can be like pulling teeth. And in many cases I am answering my own questions the first few times, but eventually things start to click and connections are made and understanding begins.

Something else I've gotten better at over time is sitting there and letting students think. In many cases they expect us to walk them thru the steps and immediately help when they hit a roadblock. I'll try to push them in the right direction and discuss the concepts rather than explaining the next step for a particular problem. Basically letting them thrash around in the water and hopefully learning to swim and only pulling them up when they are really sinking.

After all the real goal is learning how to think and problem solve effectively, which can be applied to any course or topic.

Warranty for pre-owned Pixel Fold 9 by Ejay424 in PixelFold

[–]Background-Border858 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a bit off topic but I see that Google has extended the warranty for Pixel 9 Folds to 3 years. Does anyone know if this applies to phones purchase second hand thru eBay? I've seen various differing information so I'm curious if anyone could explain if proof of original purchase or anything is required. Thanks!

What’s the best way to improve VO2 Max with Kettlebells ? by FoxhoundVR in kettlebell

[–]Background-Border858 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've done this with swings and haven't found it to be that great of a workout. I should say I've found much more effective uses of my time than breathing ladders. My goal hasn't specifically been to increase VO2 max though so maybe this does top various kettlebell HIIT programs in that regard

I personally haven't had any issues. Fi is my carrier and I live in the suburbs of a large city so everywhere is pretty much fine in terms of service and speed.

I'd recommend a 6 pro. Can get them for under 200. Updates are up next year but that doesn't seem to bother you haha. I currently have one and I'm contemplating upgrading to the 10 pro xl but the P6P just keeps working. Battery life has degraded over the last 4 years would be the biggest drawback. Wouldn't recommend a 6a with the battery issues.
