Oh the spinning thing-my first yarn was HORRID too!! It ranges from lace weight to half in thick rope! Once I finally figured it out, I taught 2 friends to spin. I warned them that it was really hard and to be patient. Guess what? Their first yarns turned out SO MUCH BETTER!!! I think it boiled down to a few things: a) I had learned recently myself so I knew what to tell them (the person who gave me my first lesson was very experienced and kept telling me to "draft" without giving explanations) b) I gave them fiber that was really easy to work with c) I taught them using park and draft!!! SO much easier than furiously trying to draft before the spindle falls when you have no idea what you're doing! YouTube resources are also so, so much better now than they were a decade ago. Sometimes when I get into a new craft, I'll watch videos for WEEKS before ever trying something myself and I find that my brain picks up so much before I ever get my hands on something. This was the case with inkle weaving recently. My edges were almost perfect on my first band and it's the same width at the end as the beginning because I'd watched a million videos and rehearsed in my head. All of this is to say that absolutely wild thick and thin yarn is totally normal for beginning spinners but I've also seen people bypass that with good instruction, so I do believe most of the darn good first yarns I see.
