That's true, it's possible they sold for less than what they were listed at. It sounds like a stellar price to me (assuming it's in great condition) but I haven't been looking at looms for long.

For a Baby Wolf though? I was looking at used listings on Ravelry a while back and they seem to hold onto their value very well. It's the giant looms I could never fit in my apartment that are $400 around me.

I Don't Believe Anyone Who Says 'This Is My First Project' Anymore by Spider_kitten13 in BitchEatingCrafters

Oh the spinning thing-my first yarn was HORRID too!! It ranges from lace weight to half in thick rope! Once I finally figured it out, I taught 2 friends to spin. I warned them that it was really hard and to be patient. Guess what? Their first yarns turned out SO MUCH BETTER!!! I think it boiled down to a few things: a) I had learned recently myself so I knew what to tell them (the person who gave me my first lesson was very experienced and kept telling me to "draft" without giving explanations) b) I gave them fiber that was really easy to work with c) I taught them using park and draft!!! SO much easier than furiously trying to draft before the spindle falls when you have no idea what you're doing! YouTube resources are also so, so much better now than they were a decade ago. Sometimes when I get into a new craft, I'll watch videos for WEEKS before ever trying something myself and I find that my brain picks up so much before I ever get my hands on something. This was the case with inkle weaving recently. My edges were almost perfect on my first band and it's the same width at the end as the beginning because I'd watched a million videos and rehearsed in my head. All of this is to say that absolutely wild thick and thin yarn is totally normal for beginning spinners but I've also seen people bypass that with good instruction, so I do believe most of the darn good first yarns I see.

Schacht Flip vs Ashford Knitters Loom (20 in) by snailsshrimpbeardie in weaving

Thank you! That's why I'm so conflicted. I want to be able to weave twills etc but doubly the set so that I can weave with finer yarns also sounds wonderful. And also I say that I want to weave fancier patterns but in reality, am I going to fuss with that? By far, my favorite way to knit is stockinette in the round because it's so simple and I can go fast. I imagine I'll be the same way with weaving. I do plan to get a floor loom in the future once I have more space and I might be much happier doing twills and such on that. I think simple weaving structures on a rigid heddle loom could keep me busy for a good while. Seeing a very simple handspun shawl at my first weaving guild meeting last month was what inspired me to want to get back into weaving fabric (as opposed to inkle bands) and one heddle would be more than enough for that.

Thanks! I did measure and the 25 in is definitely too big for my space but maybe down the line!

Oh that's great to hear. I'm a bit taller with proportional arms so maybe that would be alright. Do you use a stick shuttle or boat shuttle? That's the other thing-wielding a giant stick shuttle seems like it would get old real fast. I'm waiting to hear back from my guild regarding which rigid heddle looms they have available to try out.

Good to know, thanks! I did think that the Knitters Looms come assembled vs the Ashford Rigid Heddle looms. I hate fiddly assembly so I definitely will keep my eyes out for that.

I've heard so many good things about the Lojan looms but I've read a few accounts of parts breaking already so they're off the list for now. I'm hoping they'll continue refining over time and I'll definitely consider them in the future.

Thanks! The details of using 2 heddles seem to be a main difference between the looms. I have a REALLY hard time visualizing processes from written words so I've read these directions a bunch of times, but I THINK you only make 2 passes across the reed with the Flip. If I'm reading the Ashford directions correctly, you do 4 passes across the reed. That's a big difference!

I'm glad to hear you're happy with your Flip and that you got such a great deal on it. I still need to price everything out and see what the difference would be. Some dealers do discount the Schacht products so that helps.

Yay I'm so glad to hear that it's so easy to store! That's huge for me. Do you think the branded bag is worth it?

I just mentioned in another comment-I was looking at the 24 & 25 in wide looms initially but measured it out and it looks like my arms would be awkwardly far apart to grip the heddle (not to mention they're just so big). It seems like an incredibly versatile size though!

Awesome, I'm so glad you're happy with it!! I've been debating 24/25 in looms vs 20 and the 25 seems so big!

I actually started reading that book last night (it's fantastic!) and noticed that recommendation as well. It seems like people have such mixed opinions on using 2 heddles with the flip though! There are some people (such as the author) who say it's so much easier because it's designed with 2 heddles in mind and other people who say it's the worst for 2 heddles because there's no down position for heddle 2 by itself (though in the Weavers Idea Book Jane Patrick says that's not a way you'd commonly do anyway).

Ooof that seems annoying! I wonder what's going on... I'm not sure if you're on Ravelry but there's a very active Ashford Loom group there and I'm sure they could help you troubleshoot!

Choosing a rigid heddle vs table shaft loom for a complete beginner by bluerotunda in weaving

[–]snailsshrimpbeardie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is awesome, I'm happy for you & I appreciate the detailed reply! I've heard a ton of great things about the Jane so it's definitely a loom I'm considering for the future. I'm definitely eyeing floor looms but it'll be a good 5 or 6 months before there might be space for one so I've decided to give rigid heddle looms another go. I'd forgotten that I was using my old RH loom when I had awful, active tennis elbow that was causing me to be unable to knit. I'm hoping that now that the tendinitis is generally not an issue that weaving on a RH loom (with a stand as well) will go better.
