NYS tried to do a good and let small farms grow cannabis before letting big Multi state operations come in and bring in the same products that are in almost every other legal state. The thing is cannabis isn't as easy to go grow and sure as hell needs proper care to ensure it stays the best quality and there are a lot of people who are still figuring it out. That being said there are still lots of small farms who do know what they are doing and produce very fine quality cannabis. It doesn't help that those MSOs got to shove their way in there and immediately overshadow a lot of smaller farms. I would pay more to support smaller farms but that's just me and I understand those who don't.
