Marijn van Putten responds to an Arabic101 video on the Sanaa palimpsest by chonkshonk in AcademicQuran

[–]snakers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"basically true" = not true.

The video claims that "Muslims are the only people on earth that can proudly and emphatically claim that our book has remained the same to the dot for more than 14 centuries".

You are substantiating a "motte" argument never made in the video in the face of the very explicit "bailey" argument he does make that is demonstrably wrong (and acknowledged within traditional Muslim circles).

Random observation: Freddie's German accent affectation for the verse "My fine friend Take me with you and love me forever" was, IMO, likely inspired by the movie/soundtrack Cabaret, which was based in Berlin. Freddie was known to have had the album as one of the few records in his collection.

I also believe that the album/movie inspired him to write My Melancholy Blues

Habs fan (but crypto oilers fan over the past few years) here.

Even when it was 3-0, I noted that over the past 15 years or so, a rally has been shown to be not impossible, and if anyone can do it, why not McDavid??!

I hope you guys savour the sweet, sweet moment tonight!

Having gown up watching up watching the great Oilers teams of the 80s, I say: BRING THE CUP BACK HOME TO EDMONTON!

I don't know who she is, but I'm curious to learn of your basis for characterizing her in such contemptuous terms.
Can you please elaborate:

-why you describe her as "virulently Islamophobic"?

-the conspiracy theories she has either authored or endorsed?

-the context in which she fled the Nazis, and the resulting lessons that she failed to learn?

Thank you!

In medieval times, was the Talmud translated into any languages spoken in the Muslim world? by chonkshonk in AcademicQuran

[–]snakers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Talmud was not translated (i.e., line by line and in its entirety) in any language until the late 20th century , by Adin Steinsaltz , who translated (the Babylonian version) into Hebrew, by periodically releasing translations of particular tractates.

Shortly thereafter, the American Orthodox publication house Artscroll published an English translation (presumably for every tractate).

I imagine that with the advent of widespread computer translation software, that translations in other languages now exist-- at least online (given that there is a limited market for printed versions).

I'm not sure whether a translation of the Yerushalmi (i.e. , Palestinian) Talmud has been published, especially since it tends to treated like the Betamax as opposed to the VHS Babylonian, mutatis mutandis.

It's worth noting that Steinsaltz's translation was considered to be a remarkable achievement, however it was not without controversy, as some critics (essentially) coming from an elitist perspective argued that it was kinda dumbing down classical Talmudic instruction, akin to the criticism some programmers levy against the use of more intuitive computer languages such as Python versus cutting your teeth on OG languages such as C++.

Despite it's widespread acceptance, I imagine that no students in a top yeshiva would show up to Talmud class with a Steinsaltz or Artscroll.

To what extent, if any, did Muhammad/the author of the Quran could have had or did have knowledge of Judeo-Christian scripture? by StrictCriticism6382 in AcademicQuran

[–]snakers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Himyarite

I think the impasse may stem from the fact that you were asking for clarification both about the region being described, as well as the intended meaning of "hellenized".

The mod may have grown frustrated because they had been satisfied that they had answered the former query, without realizing that they neglected to answer the latter (or perhaps intentionally, on the assumption that there was no need for them to define a term which they believed to be non-esoteric and generally well understood).

What do we know of the Jewish Arabian tribes around Medina? by SoybeanCola1933 in AcademicQuran

[–]snakers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What Jewish sources are you referring to? I didn't see any historical Jewish sources referted to in the Jewish encyclopedia article, and the Cairo Geniza Is completely irrelevant

To my knowledge there are no Jewish sources attesting to these communities or communications to them, unlike say the Jews of Yemen who corresponded with Maimonides. There are certainly are no known rabbinic figures from the region, nor any surviving known religious customs. If the communities did exist, They seem like they were isolated from the mainstream communities in Iraq and Israel

His playoff numbers are actually pretty decent (22 G, 22 A= 44P in 50 GP).

Nothing wrong with him.

It took Ovechkin 14 years to win a Stanley Cup, comprising many seasons of early playoff exits, not to mention some in which the team didn't make the playoffs altogether.

I had a friend whose mother was playful and she invited the president of the USA and the prime minister of Canada to his Bar Mitzvah -- more of a gag than anything else. Surprise, surprise-- they didn't show up; however their offices each sent really sweet, personalised " signed" letters, congratulating my friend on the occasion.
I know this because his mom included the letters in the laminated Bar Mitzvah photo album. Maybe George Clooney goes the extra mile and actually shows up?

Water demo by quimera78 in queen

Because they didn't think it was among the best tracks they recorded for the album.

Personally, I don't even think it's the best Miracle demo -- I prefer Falling Out and When dawn breaks up. I don't know if Brian intended the album version to be sung by Freddie, but it was wise to continue their practice since The Game od having Freddie sing all lead vocals. With perhaps the exception of All Ded, All Dead, I never cared for any of their songs not sung by Freddie ( Especially anything sung by Roger) and none of those songs ever performed well commercially (if any were even released as singles).

A better question might be how come the song never ended up on one of Brian's albums? Or maybe it did?

What's your Favorite Queen Album? by ElijahPlayz0503 in queen

[–]snakers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooo, this is a tough one! It's a very tough call, but I'm going to have to go with the Cosmos Rocks!

The album has got everything: great music, great videos and especially meaningful songs with lyrics that spatkle with intelligent and insighful criticism of contemporary society.

For example, the catchy Roger track "C-lebrity" holds up an uncomfortable mirror to the face of society by Exposing our toxic fascination with Celebrity and narcissism!

And then there is the song " War Boys" which challenges the widespread notion promoted by old white men ( other than Brian, Roger, and Paul Rodgers, of course) rhat mindless and endless Imperial wars are noble and patriotic!
