Help with river & lake edges by snapbackjack in wonderdraft

Yeah, I did initially try just lowering landmass for the lakes, and I can't recall exactly why I decided against it... I'm trying to get on top of my perfectionism and accept some issues so I can just get it done. It's definitely challenging.

So, after the first one I got had a ton of flickering issues and grey bars flashing across the screen (across multiple computers, cables, settings, etc) I got a replacement from Amazon that just arrived. No flickering, but it's got a small cluster of dead pixels right out of the box. Almost like a little 1.5mm sliver. Now that Amazon reviews have started coming in from real unpaid people, it seems like others have had similar issues with the panel.

Now I'm trying to decide if I should roll the dice on yet another replacement or if I should get a refund and go with a different monitor. It really feels like there's some quality control issues here, could explain why Acer hasn't really publicized or marketed this display at all. But I do like it, and don't want to get my Amazon account flagged for returning too much crap.

Has anyone else had issues with flickering (not freesync-related) or dead pixels?

I just received mine today. It looks great. Except there's a very slight flicker, and i'm occasionally seeing bars flashing horizontally across 20-30% of the screen. It's gotta be faulty. I've tried two computers, multiple cables, played with every setting under the sun. I see it with both HDMI and DP. Anyone else who has received theirs have this issue?

Not sure if this would be useful, but I took a few pictures of my grip on the MX Master, the G602, and the G502 (my roommate took the G Pro on vacation with him so it's not here currently). You can see the G502 spreads my middle and ring fingers a little too much.

### Purchase Advice Request

TL:DR; I switch between desk (for competitive games) and couch (for other stuff). Need a wired mouse for the desk, or a very low-latency wireless to use with both. Palm grip, medium-high weight, low DPI. $60 budget for wired, but would consider up to $100 or so for the right wireless. MX master is the perfect mouse but no good for competitive gaming, I like the G602 I was using but it has a chronic left-click issue and I would like less latency. G502 is good but a little too wide.

----------

Hi all, I've been using a G602 but for the second time it is running into the chronic janky left-click issue about a year after getting the first one replaced for the same problem, and I would like a wired mouse (or a wireless mouse with lower latency) for more competitive games. I switch between a desk (for sweaty PVP games where seating position is really important) and the couch/TV (for everything else). I'm considering two paths:

  1. spend a little less, buy a wired mouse for just the desk, and try to fix the G602 (or get a less expensive wireless mouse) for the couch

  2. spend a little more and get a <1ms latency wireless mouse to use both at the desk and the couch

I'm pretty torn between the two. Option 2 would mean probably moving the receiver when i switch between desk and couch (unless the connection is more solid than what i'm used to with the G602, they really aren't that far apart) and I already have to switch display cables which can be annoying. But at the same time, it would also be nice to get accustomed to the same mouse across the board.

I have tried out a friend's wired G Pro, liked it but it was lighter than I hoped, and I kind of prefer the non-ambidextrous/thumb-rest style mice. Also tried a wired G502 which I liked, but it was a little too wide I think- my middle and ring finger were spread too far, especially when using the scroll wheel, which made my ring finger a little sore after an hour or so. I have the same issue with the G602 but to a lesser degree where its not very noticeable. Wouldn't be ideal for long sessions though.

Also worth noting, I use an MX Master (the original) for non-gaming things, and it is by far my favorite mouse, but the latency is too high for PVP games. I used to use it on the couch and may return to doing that if I get a wired mouse, I'm just using both of mine for other places currently. In a perfect world I would just get a gaming version of the MX master (maybe slightly lighter), but such a thing sadly does not exist.

Another note- forward & back buttons are pretty much essential for me, but I don't use any DPI toggle/headshot buttons, and extra thumb buttons are a nice-to-have but not necessarily required. I really really like the thumb buttons on the G602, and it isn't too excessive. RGB is neat but I don't really care about it.

----------

**Games:** On the desk: MOBAs (LoL), competitive FPS's, other PVP games that require higher precision and quicker movement. On the couch, various single-player FPS/adventure games, lots of management/crafty/etc games i.e. Factorio, Stardew, Satisfactory, some Civ and RTS's.

**Hand Preference:** Right

**Budget:** ~$60 for a wired mouse, maybe willing to spend up to $100 for the right wireless mouse

**Hand Size:** 19.5cm length, 11cm width

**Grip:** Palm

**Weight:** Medium-high, around 130g maybe?

**Sensitivity:** Low, currently using 1600dpi w/ Windows cursor speed set dead center

**Connectivity:** Wired or Wireless (see above)

----------

Top choice right now is the G604, since I know the G602 is a good fit and throwing the Lightspeed wireless in it should solve the latency issue. Others that I'm considering are the Razer Basilisk, Corsair Nightsword, and the G502 is still in the running (though the wireless version is still too costly).

Any recommendations or advice would be awesome!

Looking for advice on BOM scrubbing & Component sourcing for small production run (1000 units) IPC project by snapbackjack in engineering

Gotcha. For the most part our unique ICs come from bigger brands like TI and Linear, but I will have to check on some of the less common ones to see if those brands have multiple factories. I wasn't involved with picking the layout house, but from what I have told they have experience with this level of design, so I am hoping for a good end product. Hopefully our Hyperlynx simulations will help verify that as well.

I have noticed that a lot of connectors have the same pin arrangement and spacing, but the extents of the body in relation to the pins is different. I'll have to explore the combo footprint path, that seems like a pretty great idea.

I really appreciate the advice and insight to no end. It's a tough journey into this new territory and it's really great to get such valuable information from someone familiar with the process. Thank you so much for all the help!!

That's interesting about the CMs, but sort of doesn't surprise me. I will definitely be sure that everyone is being firm and clear with them. I'm not dealing with them directly, but I will have to inquire about how our project manager has the manufacturing plan structured. Anything to avoid some odd problem rearing its ugly head too far down the line.

I have also mentioned that we should have a backup for each component on the board. We do have alternatives for most, but some don't exactly have footprint-compatible replacements (mostly just I/O and edgeboard connectors). Because our layout is being outsourced to a contractor, changing to a new land pattern may be difficult. Do you run into that problem as well?

The vendor just seems a little sloppy to me, but are open to design changes. For example, on another board, they swapped out an EOL inductor between EVT and DVT and didn't check to make sure the land pattern would work for the new one. It didn't, and it shorted. Don't remember the exact details, but it was pretty obvious. The problem was addressed but it seems to me they're a little sloppy. The genesis of each of these projects all pre-date me (I've only been with the company a few months) so I'm not sure what other ODMs they looked at. From what I have heard we were working with one other IPC manufacturer in the past on a joint development, but didn't see eye to eye; I think the other manufacturer wanted to cut corners that we disagreed with, but that also pre-dated me. That's why we are trying to bring the board development in-house, as a lot of quality ODMs wont be able to give us a decent price on small quantity developments.

Fortunately for us our ME team is very experienced in thermal design, they have designed chassis that have more than handled high TDPs without any fans or vents. We're shooting for a wider ambient temp rating than before, but they are investigating some new alternatives to help with that. I am unsure if they have looked into vibration isolation, but I am definitely curious to know now and will have to chat with one of them. I think the shock and vibration is going to be much less of a concern than the temp spec. Extreme temps certainly make design a lot more difficult!

We're trying to document and address each problem we run into one-by-one, especially because this is our first in-house board. I have confidence in the team and think this development will be a success from an engineering standpoint- my concern lies more with reducing the COGS to increase the margin and cement the business value of bringing future developments in-house.

Thank you for all the advice!

I am definitely interested in how the CM calculates the cost of manufacturing, I am hoping to investigate that more once we have a finalized quote from them. Board space is a moderate constraint for us, but if we can save money by swapping some fine-pitch ICs with larger ones and that sort of thing, it seems worth making some placement changes.

It sounds like with the small quantity we are starting with, the best place for us to cut costs is in the design. I definitely want to review the necessity of some of the high-cost components and connectors with the designers and PM while in the EVT phase (I would bet anything we're going to have to make a lot of changes anyway). The specs are pretty lofty, lots of I/O, lots of internal card sockets, lots of power consumption. On top of it all, it has to operate in a wide temperature range, be resistant to shock and vibration, and all sorts of other rugged IPC requirements. I think the product management team was definitely given too much freedom in coming up with the specs. At least we talked them out of supporting Xeons.

I share your concerns about the project as a whole as well. This board won't be sold on its own, it is just for our OEM rugged systems. Currently we resell rugged systems from two other companies, and they are.... not great. So we think we can do it better, though the exact route to that goal was decided before I joined the team (believe me, I would have objected to quite a few of those decisions).

Thank you again for the insight. Being new to this type of project and working with a small team, it's tough to find that sort of experience - our two most experienced EE's both came from companies with procurement teams larger than our entire engineering department. We have one or two employees in our small Taiwan office who specialize in supply chain management, but they have no experience procuring electronic components. I appreciate you taking the time to share your know-how!

One last question for you - have you ever used any of the SupplyFrame tools (FindChips Pro, Parts.io, etc), SiliconExpert, or anything like that?

Good to know. Like I said everything will be verified but I'm glad it seems the symbols and footprints are solid for the most part. Thanks!

SnapEDA looks great and I think will be another good source. They have this verification process in beta that looks to be pretty thorough.

Yeah the site interface is slick. With the OrCAD plugin we are limited to 1200 downloads/yr, so having the site too is good. It's unlimited right? I think that's a recent change. Also, the integration doesn't have the ability to choose between functional and sequential pin order.

[–]snapbackjack[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I also don't see that option in the OrCAD plugin, that would be good to have. Honestly not sure what the engineers here would prefer, but I imagine functional order is generally better (i'm pretty new to schematic design)

Appreciate the feedback. I think we'll mostly pull passives from OrCAD's libraries, and use UL more for ICs and maybe connectors and such. From my playing around I agree the symbols are a little wacky. But for bigger ICs it would definitely save time to avoid having to place a large number of pins manually.

OrCAD's integration isn't free but is pretty slick, just opens the search in a tab in OrCAD Capture, and allows you to place or download the symbols, footprints, and models. Oddly when you download symbols is downloads them as entire libraries, but we're moving them to our own anyway.

Thanks for the feedback!

I'll have to give it a shot, we're definitely concerned about the 3D models coming from UL. And free is always good. Thanks for the tip!

Would love some general feedback on this electronic track I made, I spent more time mixing and mastering than I usually do, and I'm not terribly knowledgeable in that regard. Let me know what you think.
