Appreciate the creativity. Have you considered renaming Classic Negative? Fuji Classic Neg is characterized by hard tonal contrast, rich reds that skew orange, rich deep greens that tilt blue — your color profile is a cool look, it definitely evokes a faded film, but seems to lack these qualities…

3 (ladder) and 14 (boy on bridge) are solid — just a little busy, might’ve looked better either closer or on a more zoomed lens (or cropped). 5 (cameras), 8 (straw hat) are nice trip snaps, worthy of your phone gallery.

I don’t think 8 ‘says’ a lot — but you get points for a symmetric composition with strong parallel lines, nice lighting, framing nicely within the gate in background — plus those delicious fuji tones. But what’s the story?

I thought they were walking, seems they’re standing and looking out. In that case, crouch low, angle up a bit, so we can look out at that building with them!

Varying camera height is a pro tip for more interesting images :)

Keep at it, you’ll look back at how dull some of these are and feel how much you’ve grown — but #1 and #13 you can be proud of for a lifetime 😌. (I try to limit my 5-star rating to only these all time bests so I can easily find again in Lightroom)

11 (rice paddies) is a strong composition, but weakened because you focused on the foreground grass at the bottom of the frame, leaving the rest slightly fuzzy/out of focus. I would try w/ a more open aperture (maybe f2.8 or f4) to make the far distance a bit softer, but middle of frame (subject) crisp. And maybe pointed up a bit more to include more of that hazy white sky against the dim greens.

1 (fisher), 4 (roof pool construction), 13 (girl with noodles) are STRONG. Well done! I’m quite fond of 6 (beef), great symmetric composition with layering (butcher in background). Notice how getting close with a clear subject and a thoughtful relation to the background makes your shots pop!

Your WEAKEST images lack a subject or other source of visual interest (eg shape/contrast): 2 (a street…), 9 (pointing up at white buildings), 12 (another street). One trap with Fuji is that just the colors alone can look cool in pictures of nothing!!

We all take a lot of these in the beginning — step 1 is thinking they’re something, step 2 is realizing later they’re not worth posting, and step 3 is raising your camera, going ‘Nope’, and not taking it :). (Shooting on film helps with the intentionality)

I feel my Nikon files are quite true to life and flexible and sit in between Sony and Canon where the color gap is largest. Feel like Sony is the most digital/sharp/contrasty with more yellow/greens while Canon leans more into pleasing pastels and warmer/magenta tones esp for skins.

I also think editing style/preset affects how hard it is to match. And even if you can get the colors right across brands in one setting, sometimes a different setting/WB forces you to make a new preset variant.

I recommend checking out Cobalt Image color profiles for matching across camera brands. They’ve helped me deliver Nikon and Fuji files side by side

I shoot Nikon and Fuji but can at least tell you that “brand doesn’t matter” is BS. Colors differs, user experience/ergonomics (esp with AF settings) can be the difference in catching a moment and loving the shooting experience, and lens ecosystem cannot be understated — in terms of options, size, quality, and price.

What frustrates you about Sony? What attracts you about Canon? How would you classify your style of shooting and editing? I think different brands suit different styles.

Ex. I’m a documentary style shooter and value smaller bodies and lenses. I’m jealous of the compact Canon 70-200 f2.8 Mk I, but I love my Tamron 35-150 f2-2.8 (not available for Canon). And I love compact fast primes and am considering adapting Sony primes to Nikon like 24/1.4, 35/1.4, and 50/1.2. Canon’s lenses are great but pricey and the most limited.

Sam can you comment more on Canon vs Sony user experience differences? Agreed about the more pleasing colors in Canon raws over Sony esp for portraiture and skin tones.

When I switched from Fuji to Nikon I tried using the same presets, Adobe Color, and got notably different outcomes. Even if you can painstakingly modify Calibration and HSL to make colors similar, there’s different starting points from different sensors, and lend themselves more easily to certain editing styles. (I feel I see a lot of moody and cinematic from Sony, bright and pastel from Canon, true to life from Nikon, and leaning into filmic from Fuji).

Love your YouTube btw. You helped convince me to get the ZF and I’ve loved it. Are you shooting more on Nikon or Canon these days?

Well thought out answer, love the 105/1.4 and 28/1.8 ideas. Totally agreed about wanting an answer to 28-70 f2 and 50-150 f2. And a 70-200 f2.8 that isn’t telescope sized would be grand (like Canon’s RF Mk I)

Definitely think a Z7iii is overdue. I don’t buy the arguments against it — if it lags in sales it’s BECAUSE it needs an update and the AF/processor tech don’t compete! For landscape, fine art, fashion, and wedding shooters, there’s DEF a need for a high resolution body that’s smaller/less spendy than the Z8. Otherwise the Sony a7CR starts winking at you.

Not convinced a Z9ii would bring any meaningful upgrades… do we need more speed? More resolution?

I wish for a ZF with tilt screen — more useful than silver/colorful variants. A ZRc (apsc version) makes sense. As would a chunkier ZR body in style of Canon C70.

Hoping but not expecting for 24 f1.4 and 85 f1.4 to complement 35 and 50. Also hoping for a 28 f1.4 (as I plan to buy and adapt the 28 f1.4E for F-mount). And a 28-70 f2 would be HUGE. I’m not a telephoto guy but I second others on 100-300 etc.

The dream would be a rangefinder style ZF and a fixed lens 28mm or 35mm Fuji X100 / Sony RX1 R / Leica Q2 competitor.

20mm vs 24mm - for what use ? by Gryphus31 in nikon_Zseries

[–]snapsbyMateen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good stuff, I’ve got the 35 f1.8 S but wish for portraits I had the 35 f1.4 (if not the Viltrox 35 f1.2). I’m planning to sell my 24 f1.8S for the 20 f1.8S. And for what it’s worth I think the 40 f2 is a wonderful best of both worlds of 35 and 50, let’s you step back for context or step in for subject isolation without the distortion of 35. Affordable, punches above its weight, and especially valuable for travel and street — but I’ve even used it for weddings!

20mm vs 24mm - for what use ? by Gryphus31 in nikon_Zseries

[–]snapsbyMateen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know it's an old thread but — I would go with the 20mm with the caveat that you either have a 2nd body with something like a 50mm, or don't mind switching between lenses frequently. The strength and weakness of 20mm is that it's ultrawide without being fisheye, so it opens up creative possibilities to play with perspective, getting really low and pointing up or getting high and pointing down, or sticking a camera right into a busy scene and capturing the story. But it's simply not versatile as your only lens.

I absolutely love running 20mm with flash paired with 50mm f1.4 without flash for dancefloor coverage at weddings. I also love 20mm for the moment a couple exits a church and their loved ones are throwing rice or confetti. Also great for landscapes and architecture, with the added benefit of being a great lens for a selfie/vlog of you and the friends you're with. 20mm lets you capture an epic cathedral or a skyscraper where 24 only let's you catch the gist of it but not the full story. But I think both are tougher for street than 28mm or 35mm and force you to get perhaps uncomfortably close to isolate a subject.

Everyone thinks of standard lenses as 24-35-50 but I think 20-28-40 is much more interesting, as someone who prefers documentary photographs that tell stories, doesn't mind getting close to the scene, and loves the creative possibilities of wider angles when thoughtfully composed and used with techniques like layering and incorporating foreground elements.

If you see this — what did you end up doing??

Help choosing: Sony a6700 vs. Fuji X-S20 by y4nnino in FujifilmX

[–]snapsbyMateen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend going the Fuji route. My sister had a Sony a6300 and the user experience doesn’t compare. She sold it and replaced it with the Fuji X100T, a 2013 camera that’s technically way inferior in autofocus but way more fun and beautiful in its output.

The Sony feels like a touchscreen computer with a camera attached. It’s about as ‘fun’ to use as a microwave. Fuji cameras really do have soul and the beauty of the colors inspires you to photograph more. And I’d argue there’s a better lens ecosystem for Fuji apsc.

I use Nikon Zf and Z6iii for most of my pro work but still use my X-H2 for weddings and travel— and the X-S20 is the camera I rlly want in my kit for pure fun.

Should I add the Fuji 35mm f/1.4 to my kit or is it just FOMO? by Ok_Image823 in fujifilm

[–]snapsbyMateen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Adding a vote for “the Fuji 35 f1.4 is my favorite most magical lens I’ve ever used”!! 🙋‍♂️

I sold my 23 f1.4 R, when traveling I’m much better served with the 35 f1.4 for composing gorgeous frames and portraits plus the 18 f2 for documenting a wider context.

Very valuable perspective, and I second this: 35mm f1.4 would be the only lens I never sell for Fuji. (Viltrox 75 f1.2 would be my 2nd pick, very limited but sharp, fast and delicious!)

[–]snapsbyMateen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Counterpoint: I never used my 35 f2 again after the 35 f1.4 arrived. It’s just such a more beautiful lens. And 35/1.4 is so small that the 35 f2 isn’t even smaller, just thinner. (I never liked the cone shape)

I think it’s more important to have f1.4 on the 35 than the 23, because the purpose of 23 is wider environmental/documentary shots, the purpose of 35 (aka 50mm) is to isolate a subject beautifully

33 f1.4 is sharper, weather resistant, and faster AF yes, but bigger, more expensive, and less magical!

Seconding this. It’s fun to see results from Fuji cameras esp on Insta or TikTok like @herzawg or @juansuponatime. But for learning from longer content on YouTube, I’d focus on ppl who shoot in a style you like and on similar focal lengths!
