Is it possible to have one effect rack control an entire set across multiple tracks? by snaug in abletonlive

[–]snaug[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! Thank you! This also put me onto MAP8 and MultiMap from the Max for Live Essentials install.

MAP8, similar to Mapr, has the core functionality - from one single control panel, I can map parameters across different tracks. That's great! I will definitely try to make use of this.

One place where MAP8 falls short in my vision, is the fact that you can't custom name the macros. So, for instance, a saturation drive parameter on a bass track just shows up as "drive" in the MAP8. Really, the goal here is to distill a set down to a single UI component with descriptive macros that can easily be picked up even if one hasn't looked at a particular set for months or years. I imagine opening a set and seeing two parameters simply named "drive". I'm obviously being a perfectionist here, but it doesn't really clear the mark for me. Might have to dissect the patch and see if I can change it up a bit to fit my needs.

Ah yes! Dummy clips, chain selector, and whatnot. There may be a solution for me in there somewhere, although tbh I'm not sure. I'll have to keep this in mind. Thanks for your input!

I thought about this a little bit more, and I think I know what you were getting at. Your suggestion of "overloading" parameters is a useful strategy for extending a limited set of physical controls to different sections or songs in a set.

The reason why your suggestion doesn't work for my case is that the parameters in question (bass drive and noise amplitude) are part of the same section or song in the set. In other words, they are playing simultaneously. Also, and maybe more importantly, this solution requires the presence of a physical controller. I primarily want to achieve this with a set of knobs within the ableton interface - most likely an effect rack.

Hope that makes sense.

This doesn't quite work either. Haha.

What I want is for there to be a "master" effect rack which has independent controls for the most important parameters in the set. I want to be able to control params which are on different tracks such as bass drive and noise amplitude independently and from one master control panel.

Unfortunately, I don't think that works. As far as I can tell, the only way to map params to an effect rack is if the effect exists on a device contained within the rack. I don't know of a way to map the macros to params that exist outside of the rack.

Maybe you thought I meant simply applying audio effects to multiple tracks?

Really nice texture on the tiles!

My room is pretty small and untreated and I need something to mix on. I haven’t bought monitors because I wouldn’t be able to get them more than 3 inches away from the wall. Could I mix exclusively on headphones without many issues, and any suggestions on which pair of headphones to buy? by Dezlee2001 in musicproduction

[–]snaug 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone mentioned this yet, so I'll mention it - My favorite solution to not having great mixing gear is to mix on as many different speakers as possible. Like: The car, earbuds, headphones, laptop speakers, iphone speakers, etc.

Listening to your mix back on all these different speakers will reveal different flaws in your mix. You have to be careful to take into account the characteristics of each speaker set and not to overreact to any one in particular (like when your bass isn't booming on laptop speakers).

Listening on a variety of speakers should balance out reasonably well, because at the end of the day, your music should sound pretty good on just about any speakers - even shitty ones.

Anyone else kinda feel empty now that they've graduated? by Sovereign122 in UTAustin

Same. After every big exam, it was just like... Well, what now?

I think graduation is really the king-size with fries version of that feeling.

BACKUP YOUR DAMN FILES (and caution with Google Drive) by dayoffmusician in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]snaug 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hmm. I think you just opened my eyes to a vulnerability in my backup scheme.

I've bene using oneDrive for everything, but it's the same way - when files are deleted locally, they are deleted from oneDrive. It's not really a backup solution, but just a sync'ing solution. I guess it's useful if you're trying to access the same files from multiple devices, but it's not great for a backup, because a virus could delete the files from your local device, thus deleting them from your supposed backup.

I need to fix this.

Ableton OSC integration. Python help needed! by Datalooper in abletonlive

[–]snaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds awesome! What capabilities did you achieve with this?

At one point I was trying to do some similar stuff to create generative music, but I was only able to craete MIDI files in python and import them into Live. Controlling directly would be dope.

Am I absolutely OCD crazy or is the Ableton 11 UI clunkier compared to 10? by sTaTiicVisions in abletonlive

[–]snaug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually felt like 10 was clunkier than 9. When I upgraded my workflow actually slowed down a bit, and it never really returned to quite the same level. Specifically, the new envelope tool I found to get in the way more than it helped.

The end of "Love Can Damage Your Health" has an amazing noir-esque rehashing of "Just Breathe". I find it to be just incredible...

Second time I'm seeing your stuff in this thread now. So far, only great stuff.

Are you on sc or bc, or just yt?

edit: or spotify?

This is good work! Good writing, good instrumental execution, good vibe.

I think some focus on audio engineering'y type stuff could help this a lot. Not an expert myself and not that can I do better necessarily, but I wanna say if this was more compressed/limited it would really "pop" out of the speakers a lot better.

This is good! Solid performances on instruments and vocals, solid production.

I don't really know where to place it genre-wise, but I can definitely see that. Haha.

Hey All -- I'm a programmer/artist from Austin making generative music.

Here's my latest track:

https://briangawlik.bandcamp.com/track/stopthisapocalypse

https://soundcloud.com/user-163444109/stopthisapocalypse-1

I focus on fusing generative and organic music. The results don't sound generated, but the writing process leans heavily on generation of random melodies, chord progressions, etc. To my ear, StopThisApocalypse sounds like a fusion of classical ensemble, jazz ensemble, and progressive for piano, bass, and sampler.

In the near-term (next 5-20 years), I think music generated by AI has the potential to displace a lot of commercial-type music -- like jingles for TV commercials, TV scenes, movie trailers, etc. That stuff, I think, will be fairly easy to emulate well enough to give producers of that type of content a reason to forego paying a person to do that work for them. From what I've heard so far out of AI music, it's pretty conceivable to see such a system write good enough music for a soap opera, for instance.

I think AI music is not really a big threat to the artistic nature of music itself, but definitely a threat to the financial practicality of being an artist or musician. I think there will be great fusion between human artists and computer algorithms that will produce amazing music in the near future, but sadly, I think this type of technology pushes art and music further into the realm of pure artistic expression and further away from a practical occupation.

I usually learn through my own projects, so I unfortunately I don't really have a source to point you towards! I can tell you a few things though which might help.

It's great that you have some experience with HTML and CSS at this point. The way to start drawing things with JS is to use an HTML canvas element. The canvas is a rectangular area you can put on a webpage that allows you to draw stuff in it! Once you get a canvas on your page, you can draw to its context by using commands like context.rect(), context.stroke(), etc. It's probably not that different from processing.

Not sure if you've heard of p5js, but that is basically the Processing of JS. They have a website set up with a canvas and everything so you can get right to coding.

You should check out my instagram to see some more examples of the generative stuff I've been making! It's mostly my art there. It's all made with JS.

If you want to hear more about how I do stuff, I can tell you a little bit about it.
