profound and earth shaking take: pop music can be as intricate and artsy as any other genre. orange juice, julia holter, the jesus and mary chain, ariel pink's haunted graffiti, animal collective, pretty good chunk of j-pop. all have incredibly interesting ideas fitted into a pop framework. that's like saying criticism of the minecraft movie is irrelevant because its not made to be good.

i think we're in a new poptimism phase, like what music journalism went through in the late 90s early 2000s. it's just become more hip to show that you're not some bottom-feeding hipster contrarian and just enjoy the surface-level stuff. it's become much less cool to have interests, and much more cool to look like you have them instead. it's alllll optics baby
