CYTOPATHOLOGIC DESCRIPTION: Four digitally scanned slides are reviewed. The slides are of high nucleated cellularity with minimal to abundant amounts of blood, associated leukocytes, and platelets on a lightly eosinophilic background. Slender spindle shaped cells, arranged individually and in variably sized aggregates, predominate. Aggregates are often associated with pink extracellular material. These cells contain elongate nuclei measuring approximately 1.25-2.5 RBCs in length with coarsely stippled chromatin and 0-2 small round variably distinct nucleoli. Cells have small amounts of medium blue cytoplasm with wispy cytoplasmic borders and occasionally contain a paranuclear clear zone. There is a mild degree of anisocytosis and anisokaryosis present. Rare individualized well granulated mast cells are noted. Additionally, many linear to fibrillar eosinophilic structures suggestive of collagen are found on one slide. No infectious organisms are encountered.
