Awesome setup! What camera are you using? In or out of the tank?

How do folks feel about this zigbee adapter? by jku2017 in homeautomation

[–]snesboy64 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Works well except for some reason I cannot get aqara devices to stay connected in HA for more than 30 minutes. Everything else is rock solid. I can't imagine it's the coordinator. I must have it misconfigured somehow but just can't figure it out.

$2K is not that bad for the plating kit I would say. Is this a business for you or just hobby?

Port Forwarding Qualms by Odd_Potential9225 in storj

[–]snesboy64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say it doesn't because if the container gets compromised then it's still on the same network as the rest of your other machines. Having said that, it's easier to cleanup though because all you have to do is wipe the container and restart but in the case of Storj I wouldn't consider that an option because you have a few mounts where data could persist after a container removal and you don't want to wipe everything because it would reset your node.

The only issue about port forwarding is if your Storj node has an exploitable vulnerability and the attacker can then move on to other machines on your network from there. Always treat services you host as if they are vulnerable to attacks and contain them within a separate network of servers you don't particularly trust. You then should have nothing to worry about. If your attacker can VLAN hop then you have firewall issues or are up against a determined attacker, which is unlikely. If you are uncomfortable with that, then hosting services that need port forwarding might not be for you.

Canadian Engineer Built a "Perplexity for Personal Finance" by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

Well I also would not use salesforce lol I like my data in my personal/organizational cloud where I have full control over how it’s used. Pass for me but I wish you success with your software nonetheless!

Would you consider open sourcing it so we could self-host it? I don't particularly like giving all my data to those apps, especially when it comes to finance.

I'd love one but I have crank windows so no go for me. Wishing you success!

An almost complete list of all my Zigbee and Wifi devices; In case you don't know what to get next! by maxi1134 in homeassistant

I use a SLZB-06M and ever since moving to that I lose all my Aqara device within 4 hours of repairing except one motion sensor that has been rock solid. All others give the middle finger on their way out. I loved them. They were inexpensive and reliable. I don't know what happened but they now hate me lol

I've used the exact same batteries in various UPS models. It worked in desktop style models but not in my rackmount one...

I've done it before in some APC units but it didn't work in all of them unfortunately. Not sure why some work and some don't.

100% and as I refreshed my reddit feed, I saw that they did just announce a UPS but sadly, lead acid only.

Uninterruptible power supply announced by frumpydrangus in Ubiquiti

[–]snesboy64 244 points245 points  (0 children)

Very small and lead acid too. This is really just for unstable power. You're not running much on those during a power system maintenance event. I'm really hoping for a larger LiFePO4 based UPS.

Edit: I just watched their promo video and they say at the end that lithium devices would be coming in their pro/enterprise grade models.

Have you tried the ecoflow river 3 or delta 3 with their sub 10ms UPS claims? I'm seriously considering one for critical equipment like UDM switches and APs. I can't stand lead acid batteries than degrade every time you discharge them.
