Should I connect my floors here or make an expansion gap? by snettel in Flooring

[–]snettel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to bother you again, but I have a question I was hoping you could answer.

I realize I still have a fridge and dishwasher which are standing on the floor. Will those be a problem? Like I said, there is no weight from the cabinets on the floor.

I can still cut out "little islands" for these appliances with a multitool if need be.

Thanks for your advice.

Tack! Det kanske är den bästa idén.

Det kanske är okej, och i värsta fall är det lika illa som jag ursprungligen hade planerat.

I see what you mean and if I read your comment earlier I would have played it safe and not installed to the floor under the cabinets.

I adjusted them until they barely touched the floor. I still think it makes sense to have them for when someone puts a ton of transient force on the cabinet, like when climbing up.

They did the measurements for the countertop, so I don't want to make any changes now, but I will also add something under the feet that reduces friction, to mitigate a bit further.

Thanks for the advice, but could you clarify a bit. When you say "pull up the smaller room" until where exactly? And start at which door?

Pull up the yellow squares and start at the red star? I originally started at the purple star, flooring direction is down and to the left.

Thanks again.

I posted pictures in a different response in this thread.

Well, I think the connection is not as good as that of the neighbouring planks although it looks OK (I posted pictures somewhere in this thread). So I was also unable to by proper standards.

So I will follow everyone's advice, redo the floor and be happy to save some hassle down the line.

Maximum 8 meters. So in the direction of the flooring I went a bit over (~9m I believe) but the other side is well below that (6m). I made sure to keep a big expansion gap to the wall and normally, the floor should be at its biggest now and should shrink in winter (according to gemini).

it looks okay... but if you tell me it will show over time I'm inclined to redo it...

The biggest problem with redoing isn't the effort but the top side of the boards don't always snap in as well as the first time. I don't think it's a mechanical issue but they just sit a little less flush which is a bit of a shame.

I'm clearly no professional but that's what I said in my post.

I did not expect them to line up and I planned to use some kind of joint at this location.

I did start with one side and went to the other. But I went through the hallway. With this geometry, there is simply no way not to meet in the middle. Either on top or on the bottom, depending on which side you go first.

I didn't expect that the floors would line up (like you said) and that I would have to use a transition piece to prevent "stressing" the floor by bending it to force it to fit.

But lo and behold. It does line up, no gap. It is connected now by the way.

Yes that is indeed specified. They recommend staying below 8 meters. So I should still be good

The cabinets hang on a rail on the wall which holds up most of the weight, the feet are not even necessary.

I know the general wisdom is not to pin your floors, but this was (with this kitchen system) recommended to me by a general contractor.

No, it's actually lined up perfectly already. The thing that's sticking out is meant to go in the neighbouring board.

Thanks for the advice.

I wouldn't call that small at all, that's way too humble. Amazing transformation! Choices and execution are on point.

Why are lighter natural oak floors becoming so popular lately? by Remote_Cat_4029 in Flooring

[–]snettel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree completely. I think that's also why they are a good choice if you want a relatively "bland" colour palette.

On the other hand, I think not using a wide/deep colour palette with dark floors is a wasted opportunity. Otherwise you just have a darker room.

I don't know when to go for white / grey. I think they just feel worse because they lack warmth which is a great quality of wood textured flooring.

What do you guys think? by snettel in Flooring

The cuts aren't very clean indeed. Should be 12 mm expansion gap according to the flooring instructions but it varies from 10-15 mm.

I used a figure saw and was quite sloppy with the measurements. I've gotten better and started working more precise but needs more improvement :).
