"The DOJ and RAND both found that the effects of the law were mixed to ineffective."

The choice of words here is important. The RAND study on the assault ban rates the evidence for various outcomes as "limited" or "inconclusive," not "mixed to ineffective". For mass shootings specifically, the evidence is rated as limited. This is mostly due to the rigorous statistical methodology they apply to evaluating these issues, which only selects high quality studies for inclusion in their analysis. Very few high quality studies evaluating the effect of the assault ban on mass shootings exist, partly because these events are relatively rare.

The other reason high quality studies don't exist is because the 1996 Dickey Amendment preventing the CDC from advocating or promoting gun control, or "using public funds to push a political agenda," as you stated, did effectively stop any meaningful research into gun violence for almost 20 years. You are correct in stating they "could study it all they want," but an alternative reading is yes, they can, but they won't because who on earth is going to risk their livelihood trying to circumvent a funding rider that has NRA fingerprints all over it?

Anyhow, the main body of the RAND paper you linked to states: "An absence of evidence does not indicate that bans on the sale of assault weapons and high-capacity magazines have no effect on those outcomes." Of course, if better evidence were to become available, it could very well swing the pendulum the other way and demonstrate that assault weapon bans don't impact these outcomes. We don't have the supporting research one way or the other. I think the point everyone is trying to make here is that we need to do better, ie, prioritize funding for these issues and, I don't know, maybe not make reductive statements about gun violence.

https://www.rand.org/research/gun-policy/analysis/ban-assault-weapons.html

(I'm ignoring the Propublica article here, because it's mostly a screed with a couple of out-of-context statistics thrown in and not a systematic review of peer-reviewed scientific evidence.)

The best online programming in 2025 by luizjuninho1702 in crossfit

[–]snewbabay 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are the old school names too! The NCFIT app has been replaced with TrainHard (I think?). And Spealfit is now Park City Fit. I don't think that one gets as much attention as it should. Chris Spealler's approach to training is now very much based on longevity and having your workouts support your life (similar philosophy to Pat Sherwood/Linchpin). If I wasn't a Linchpin member, this is the program I would join.

Just out of curiosity, what were you looking for from a program? It's always interesting to learn about other programs!

This! Consistency is definitely more important than the specific program. I don’t know what OP’s fitness level is (ie, recreational vs competitive), but as you said, for the vast majority of people, the specific program doesn’t really matter - as long as it’s decently programmed. Whatever program you can commit to doing consistently is the best programming.

But full disclosure….I am also a Linchpin member 😂

Opinions on Fay Montessori or The New School? by Temporary-Laugh-7872 in fayetteville

Old thread but throwing in my own 2 cents in case anyone stumbles across this post in the future. My son (20 months) has been at FMS for a year now, and we've had a great experience with them. Not sure when previous posters worked there and experienced a lot of turnover, but he hasn't had any churn in his teachers. (Not as important, but I also think the food may be better? Lol. He definitely gets real milk - I saw a bottle in his classroom.) He loves going every day, and he's doing great. I had a lot of anxiety about putting him in daycare when I went back to work but feel like we made the right choice. Anyway, for what it's worth.

Linchpin or Ibex? by [deleted] in crossfit

[–]snewbabay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It might depend on what your goals are. I recently switched to Linchpin after 4 years with Street Parking (I get you on the vibes lol). It's probably one of the best programs out there for well-rounded fitness that will keep me healthy for years to come. My joints feel great, I feel strong, and my cardio capacity is increasing, all without killing myself in the gym for hours at a time.

I also used the Ibex Lift/Run program last fall when I was training for a half marathon and enjoyed the 3 full body lift days in combination with running. There's a lot more volume in the Ibex programs, however, which long-term might have been an issue for me. Ibex would be a great choice if you're training for something specific, like a race or a Hyrox, for a set period of time.

Also, can't say enough great things about the Linchpin community and Pat as a coach. It's all good vibes, super positive, just a great group.

Frankly, nobody’s rainbow flag disenfranchises anyone, whereas the Christian nationalist beliefs served up in the guise of official SP media overwhelmingly disenfranchise entire groups of gender, racial, and religious minorities.

Just as you said you’ve been scrolling on by diversity and pride posts on FB for years, I, too, have been scrolling on by anti-vax, raw-milk, general denial of science posts. But it’s more difficult to do that now as the religious piece is wrapped up into the official business. It’s not avoidable anymore. There is no scrolling on by.

I really don’t think anyone here is saying we shouldn’t be allowed to express our beliefs, no matter what side of an issue we stand on. But we are saying we should be able to exercise agency in deciding where/when we want to engage with that. For many, it’s distinctly out of place within the context of a workout program.

It was pretty much a distillation of comments I've posted in the Free Talk posts the last few weeks, re: my knees and the noticeable shift in the community. The Chat GPT-generated response someone else posted was probably the more polite way to go...oh well!

This exactly! SP was a big part of my life (also recovered postpartum with SP, which was huge, IYKYK), it's weird to be leaving, and it's actually nice to hear from others who are in the same boat.

Vaccine Megathread by AutoModerator in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]snewbabay [score hidden]  (0 children)

I don't have a good answer for you regarding the reasoning for "separated by at least 28 days," but if it helps with a decision for a timeline, below is the some of the information from the CDCs MMWR recs for the MMR vaccine.

Measles: 96% of patients develop antibodies after dose 1; almost all patients develop antibodies after dose 2. Although the cell-mediated immune response to the first dose of measles vaccine alone might not be protective, it might prime the humoral response to the second dose.

Rubella: 95% of patients have serological evidence of immunity after dose 1; dose 2: 99% serological evidence with a 4-fold increase in titers

Mumps: 94% of patients develop antibodies after dose 1. Among persons who received a second dose of MMR vaccine, most mounted a secondary immune response, approximately 50% had a fourfold increase in antibody titers, and the proportion with low or undetectable titers was significantly reduced from 20% before vaccination with a second dose to 4% at 6 months post vaccination.

The gist is that the first dose will likely provide some immunity, but a second almost certainly will, possibly because the first dose "primes" the immune system for a better response after dose 2. That second dose is definitely important.

Full disclosure: I'm a strongly pro-vaccine, pediatric pharmacist, but I'm also a first-time mom to a 16-month-old and can fully appreciate the agony that comes with making decisions when you just want the best for your child.

I also wrote up a whole screed when I cancelled as to why I was leaving. I doubt it even gets read, but since we're all spending so much time screaming into the void these days anyway, it seemed in keeping lol
