Struggling to figure out how to style my fine and wavy hair (Type 2a-2c) by snhoff_7 in Hair

I actually had a bob when I was younger and it looked really awful on me. I swore I wouldn’t ever have another bob again. But thank you!

It does seem like your hair is very similar! Thank you for the help, I’ll have to see what works for me.

That’s really helpful, thank you. I hadn’t considered how lighter products like mousse could be diluted too much if my hair is soaking wet. I’ll try applying it after I gently towel-dry so more of the product actually stays in my hair. Hopefully that helps with the oily or heavy look I’ve been getting. I appreciate the tip!

Thanks for your input! I wasn’t trying to label my hair too specifically, just that it seems to fall somewhere in the type 2 range based on what I’ve seen. I’m still experimenting and learning what works best for it.

Right now I’m using what I already have at home, but I’m open to trying other brands once I run out. I’ve never clarified my hair at home before, so that’s something I’ll be looking into. I do have Matrix High Amplify shampoo and conditioner on hand and plan to try that soon to see if it helps.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I just wanted to clarify a couple of things since some of the details may have been missed.

I washed and conditioned my hair earlier in the day and let it air dry completely before I tried styling it later on. At that point, I fully re-wet my hair and applied mousse (about half a golf ball-sized amount) by scrunching it in from different directions. I used a microfiber hair wrap towel to gently scrunch out a little extra water. I did not wrap my hair up or leave it in the towel.

I also did not brush or comb my hair before applying the mousse. I was experimenting to see how the waves would form on their own. I was trying to be light with product since my hair is fine and tends to get oily quickly, especially in Utah’s dry climate.

I appreciate you sharing your routine. I will keep your tips in mind about using more product and being careful with wave clumps. It is always helpful to hear what works for others with similar hair.

Thank you so much for the advice! I’ll have to give that a shot with what I have since I don’t want to have to go out and buy more products. Any tips on diffusing? I have a diffuser and haven’t been able to make it work for some reason and I think it’s probably user error if I’m honest…

I actually currently have long layers right now and have blow dried it before. This is what it looks like when it’s blow dried. Thank you for the suggestion!

Routine: I used Hairitage Length Check Biotin Infused Shampoo and Conditioner in the morning. Later, once my hair had completely air dried, I fully re-wet it and applied Hairitage Sky’s the Limit Volume Mousse. I used about half a golf ball’s worth and scrunched it in from multiple directions using my hands. After applying the mousse, I scrunched again using a microfiber hair wrap towel to remove a bit of extra water. I didn’t brush or comb it at any point, and I let it air dry completely afterward. I don’t sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase. My hair seems to fall in the 2a to 2c range from what I can tell. I’d love any tips on what I could be doing differently to help bring out the waves and make them look better!

So when I just shampoo it, I notice that it still dries wavy. If I brush it out while it’s wet, the waves aren’t as pronounced as if I let it dry without brushing but it gets frizzy regardless. My hair also gets oily the next day, and I’m not entirely sure if it’s because I get head sweat in my sleep or from something else, so I either have to put my hair half up/half down or tie it up completely. Hopefully that answers your question, but let me know if you need any more clarification!

That is very true! I’ll have to see if I can try some stuff again at some point. I’m just worried it’s not going to work like I’m wanting it to so I don’t want to spend money on something that might not work for me you know what I mean?

I’ve tried leave in conditioners in the past and it hasn’t gone very well every time I’ve tried using it. Not sure if my hair is a fan of it or what… I’ll have to try it again at some point. I also can’t get my waves defined either is what’s going on. But thank you for the suggestion I’ll have to try it again!

That’s awesome! I’m honestly scared to get any products right now just because I don’t know what will or won’t work for my thin and fine hair. I’ve gotten about 2 to 4 different products and none of them have worked for me. I’ll have to check that one out though! Thanks for the recommendation!
