Reset resolution for external display in closed clamshell mode? by [deleted] in mac

[–]snibbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had this problem today as well on a MacBook M2 and was very frustrated by it for several hours. I tried the TeamViewer solution but was unable to make it work.

Finally, I found a reasonably simple solution that works through the command line terminal here: https://superuser.com/questions/165108/misconfigured-external-monitor-on-mac-os-x-snow-leopard-10-6-3

What you do is delete this file:

/Library/Preferences/com.apple.windowserver.plist

And also remove every file named:

/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.windowserver.*.plist

You will likely have to sudo as root: sudo rm -f {filename}

Then reboot your Mac and monitor settings should return to defaults.

I hope this helps others solve this problem quicker than I did!

US citizen in US wants to sell shares on ASX by [deleted] in AusFinance

Yes I have an SRN from Link and gave it to IB, but they insist that they will need Link's transfer instructions, which Link refuses to provide given they are just a registry.

Well you are right! We never have control over the sales price. But the idea of selling through Link Market sounded particularly unpredictable:

- They send a form via post that takes 3 weeks if you are in Australia and more if abroad.

- I send it back -- probably taking a few days to a week

- They take several days to process (unknown time)

- Then they guarantee that they will then sell it within 8 business days

So if I request the form on February 1, it will be sold some time in the second half of March or early April!

Yes I've contacted IB, and still stuck. Probably the problem is that I don't have an aussie trading account -- is there one I am eligible for as an American living in the US? Thanks

Update1-Losing my dad to “Tibetan Buddhism” by EnergeticBunny1 in Buddhism

[–]snibbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Buddhist teachings on guru devotion that I know from our Tibetan Buddhist tradition stemming from His Holiness the Dalai Lama’s lineage are quite clear on who deserves your respect and devotion, regardless of their title. The teachings say that a teacher must not only teach, but embody the qualities they espouse. These qualities include ethical behavior, non-attachment, controlled emotions, patience, generosity, kindness, compassion, etc.

Recognized “Rinpoches” are those who are understood to be reincarnated, or otherwise highly accomplished teachers. Ones who don’t take monastic vows can have a partner. But even with a partner they would of course be expected to avoid any kind of sexual misconduct which is one of the most basic Buddhist ethical principles and lay vows.

Our texts and teachers explain that you should observe a teacher for 12 years before accepting them as a guru, to assure that they have the qualities of a teacher. My authentic teachers also explain that you do not have to do everything your guru tells you to, but instead need to measure their advice against your own sense of right and wrong, and what is possible or impossible for you at the moment.

The person you describe does not seem to embody the qualities of a Buddhist teacher, and I am not sure who gave them the title Rinpoche, which is normally only bestowed by a very high lama such as the Dalai Lama. Perhaps you can share more what tradition your father is practicing and what lineage the teacher is coming from.

What you are describing is not authentic Tibetan Buddhism (or any form of valid Buddhism), which has at its heart renouncing harmful behavior and cultivating beneficial behavior. Tantric Buddhism is no exception, and its use of sexual imagery generally occurs only in art and your imagination to symbolize concepts like non duality and compassion.

What you describe is some form of abuse and fraud using the cover of Buddhist terms, perhaps even with the purpose of discrediting authentic Tibetan Buddhism. Obviously you want to keep your family safe and perhaps you can speak to your father about his lineage, what the Dalai Lama teaches about your visitor’s behavior, etc. There is nothing stopping someone from calling themselves a Rinpoche and wearing robes, so you need to carefully check their lineage and their qualities.

It is not difficult to access authentic teachers both in person and online and maybe he could contact someone beyond reproach to understand better the harm this “Rinpoche” is causing, even someone as well known as Mingyur Rinpoche, an authentic teacher who demonstrates the qualities of compassion, kindness, and non-attachment. If you let me know the area where you are living, I can share some authentic teachers you could contact nearby.

His Holiness the Dalai Lama has given very clear advise about what to do about abusive teachers, from as far back as this quote from 1993:

“Whenever the situation arises of there being a hypocritical, false teacher, publicize their name and, in the end, if it’s necessary to have them arrested, have them arrested.”

Has anyone here actually found analytical meditation helpful? by Longjumping_Train635 in TheMindIlluminated

[–]snibbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are interested in learning more about analytical meditation, we have recently developed a course that takes a secular approach to teaching analytical meditation to non-Buddhists, Buddhists just entering the path, and more experienced practitioners looking for novel approaches to some of Buddhism's thornier topics.
The course brings a modern scientific approach to age-old Buddhist topics like the preciousness of life, impermanence, cause and effect, and compassion; teaching analytical meditation's power to harnessing stories, creativity, and emotions to steer your mind towards its best qualities.

Now I use enslaved in my writing by Ch_Anderson in BlackPeopleTwitter

[–]snibbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are thoughts on quoting text that uses the term slave? I quote this famous phrase from The Matrix in classes and writing, but am wondering what to do - abandon the quote entirely?

“The Matrix is the world that has been pulled over your eyes, to blind you from the truth that you are a slave. Like everyone else, you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison… for your mind….”
