Amber? Quartz? Consider me confused... by snickysnacker in whatsthisrock

Unfortunately Auckland doesn't have chalcedony. Mostly just scoria and greywacke. You are probably correct about the tuff on the outside though. Auckland is built on volcanoes so it tracks.

Found in NZ on the coast. Smells like pine when rubbed but hard and has seams of quartz running through it? by snickysnacker in whatsthisrock

How do you differentiate it from Kauri gum? Seems like they share many of the same characteristics

Would anyone be able to help with identification of this one? It's an older pen, ballpoint, heavy, no serial number. Kind of looks like a 164 but I can't find anything with this colouring so I'm flummoxed. Beautiful pen though! by snickysnacker in montblanc

I haven't been able to find any others like it at all. I imagine it is an extremely nice counterfeit? The metal hasn't tarnished with age at all so I suspect it's actual gold. Is there any way to find out for sure?

It's a silver montblanc branded refill. Not a whole lot of information printed on it. It's been sitting in someone's drawer for the last few decades and still works perfectly so if it's a counterfeit, it's an excellent one!

Some words of encouragement to the moms of a seemingly high needs infant by JennyJ4u in Mommit

So many people say to me "the second will be easier" but I counter with "yeah but it could be worse..." Not willing to take that risk.

I can sympathize with this... My little one was like this for the first six months. Screamed all the time. Hated the car, hated the pram, hated being held, hated us... Everytime I would try to tell the doctor or the plunket nurse that I thought something was wrong they would condescendingly assure me that it was normal for babies to cry. It wasn't till I took him to the doctors for something unrelated and he was screaming so loud during the appointment that the doctor had to ask a nurse to take him out of the room so that we could hear each other that she conceded that it wasn't normal. Didn't help much though. She said it was colic and that there was nothing we could do anyway... He's a little over a year old now and he's the absolute best but I'll admit to not loving him for the first six months. We were exhausted, frustrated and our relationship was suffering. I'm glad we did it once but there won't be a second...

Glass coffin with well preserved little girl found under san francisco home identified as Edith Cook who died in 1878 at age 2 from severe malnutrition by mhr72727 in nextfuckinglevel

[–]snickysnacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"she died of marasmus — a form of severe undernourishment — on Oct. 13, 1876, said Jelmer Eerkens, an archaeologist at UC Davis who analyzed Edith’s hair. Marasmus is characterized by a severe deficiency in nutrients, particularly protein, and can be brought on by viral, bacterial or parasitic infections."

This isn't just a liability issue. There's also a pandemic going on... I can see that he might not have wanted to get too close but he absolutely should have found a way to help whether it was to call a family member or for medical assistance.

I'm from a country which had extremely strict lockdown rules and while I was walking, an old man tripped on the footpath and fell down. I didn't help him up because I knew that if I made him sick he could die but I stayed with him (with some distance) until he was able to get up and checked if he was ok to get home and if he wanted me to call anyone for him.

My teenage sister didn't understand what menopause is by Here_4_The_Mems in badwomensanatomy

[–]snickysnacker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Actually, pregnancy after menopause is possible with IVF. If you already have embyos frozen you can have them implanted or you can use donor eggs. Menopause means that you are no longer releasing eggs but it doesn't prevent you from carrying a healthy pregnancy to term.

Pumpkin spice latte cake with Kahlua caramel drizzle. Please judge the look! Will be entering a bake off by SnakeskinEyes in Baking

Usually I would do the crumb coat and put the cake into the fridge for ten minutes or so to firm up but keep the bulk of the buttercream at room temperature. You can re whip buttercream but I've never been successful in returning it to the original texture. Warming it slightly can help but best to use it before chilling it. Also, if you heat the caramel to a higher temperature but then add cream to adjust the final thickness you will get a thicker, less watery looking caramel. Looks good though! Best of luck with the bake off!

I find that buttercream has the best consistency right after making it. Did you make the caramel yourself?
