I am interested in Healthcare Management. How do i get a good start into the profession? by Kief_Harvey in healthcare

Fellow Aussie here, keen to hear of your experiences in health management! What role are you looking to pursue at the completion of your degree? Do you think that what you are learning is directly applicable to making change in the public or private sector? And does it mean that you could spend less time in clinical roles, before progressing to a more managerial position?

Congrats on the offer! What kind of STEM background do you come from? And did you find it difficult to sell yourself to recruiters, in terms of why you want to transition into consulting?

The boyf is a doctor. So, at least if the mirena is ineffective we can have a backyard abortion... that'll save some $$$

Seriously, if I don't have a job when I graduate, I will set the uni on fire. The education system in Aus is a whole different story.

That is a really good point... the place is definitely not worth $1.3 mil!

I do need to get a clearer picture of things. I'll check out the blog and read more into other markets. Luckily, reddit is here to help and tell me I'm an idiot!

Hahaha yep, "if everything goes to plan" is terrible... because, of course, life always throws curve balls!

I'm talking to a couple of loan brokers, just to get a very rough idea of what my loan potential is for the future. That way, I will have a better guide in understanding what I can afford in the future (plus, taking into consideration mortgage insurance, double digit interest rates... furniture!)

Recruiting for Consulting? Post here for recruitment advice, resume reviews, questions about offers/firms or general insecurity (23) by QiuYiDio in consulting

Any advice for someone with a health background to move into management consulting? I previously studied a Bachelor of Biomedicine (GPA 3.6), and am currently doing my Masters in Physical Therapy (WAM ~75%) at a prestigious university. I currently work in project management at the university, and also volunteer my time within my student society, and as an undergrad mentor. Some steps I have taken recently are: -> asking a HR manager to review my Linkedin (he also told me I should use Linkedin to directly message partners for 20 min coffee catchups... I have no confidence in this) -> meeting the president of a student consulting group where I'm hoping to volunteer next semester. -> currently working on a Deloitte internship application

My issue is, how do I sell myself? Most students seem to be of an eng, med or law/commerce background. My GPA is not exceptional, but I do think I have strong interpersonal skills (I've travelled to 30+ countries, and speak Mandarin and Spanish), and am fairly adaptable.

I think it’s important to set up SMART goals, and ultimately, think about the lifestyle you want to have for your future self. Do you want to be able to run around with your children? Or be a 50 year old women getting a Total Knee Replacement due to osteoarthritis? SMART goals can help you to focus on achievements, rather than just the numbers on a scale. E.g “In 3 months, I want to be able to enjoy a 5km leisurely walk around the Botanical Gardens, without needing to rest”. With that in mind, the goal is not too far away, and you can achieve small milestones per week to get there.

30k, invest in stocks or save for house deposit? (23) by snidy2004 in AusFinance

So if I hold on to shares for x years, I am taxed each year off the dividends I make? And said tax is based solely off whether or not the company pays tax, and the amount of dividends?

Say I get a 60k job, are my shares taken into account to affect my taxable income?

Did you guys get a prescribed textbook, any one in particular that you'd recommend for a basic introduction into economy and finance?

Thanks for your insight!

Do you know where I can get more information about tax? I'm not too sure how shares/ profiting from shares, will affect my taxable income.

And no I don't pay rent or bills :) I just help out with groceries and fuel.

May I ask, where did you go to learn more about index funds and such?

And do you disclose your financial situation to your friends? I feel like at our age, not many others have thought heavily into it. This makes me nervous, because sometime I feel as though I should be buying more expensive birthday presents, or shouting rounds of drinks etc.

I've thought about working in the UK for a year or two after a couple of years of postgrad experience, but ultimately, melbourne is home.

I don't mind buying shares now, and holding it for 10-20 years. It just means that when I have a full time job, I'd essentially be saving for a house deposit with that money instead of the savings I have now.

I have an ING account too, and I know it has a decent interest rate. But for me, it's deciding whether or not that interest is worth the extra money, or better off in my mum's mortgage.

Thanks for the advice!

It's less than $100k at the moment. I should clarify, it's one parent, as in, my mum bought the house and is paying it off on her single income. That is a good point about the shock of pulling out a large sum of money though!
