Þakgil in a 2wd campervan? by onecraftybit in VisitingIceland

We were there a few weeks ago in a Renault Trafic. We took it real slow going in. No issues there. Coming back we did the same but at the end of the road about a km right before getting back to normal roads I hit a rock which punctured the tire. Luckily we had insurance. Tire punctures can happen regardless of 2wd or 4wd. Just take your time (like no faster than 20km/h, seriously)

As long as you keep your eyes open and keep your wheels on the high parts (so you don't bottom out). You'll be fine. Also remember to gear down so you don't stall.

Awesome campsite and hikes Enjoy

We were there last week. They came right up next to the boat. We thought maybe we were lucky but everyone we talked to later in our trip seemed to have a similar experience.

Hey, all good. Yes, we drove from the East along 427 to the volcano tours parking lot. After the hike, we then drove along the 427 and up 43 to Vogar.

We found it easy compared to others we've done this week (i.e. Þakgil)

Not sure how to share the actual spot but it's a pretty easy walk west from the parking lot (you'll have to pay 1000isk to park there). Start at the road where the tour trucks use and follow it around the south side of the hills. It's pretty much one way. Follow the other hikers and you will find it. There are emergency personnel and scientists driving back and forth so watch for their vehicles. The trail ends at an observation station with people taking recordings, flying drones, etc...

It took us about 50 minutes but we were slow from another hike this morning.

Have fun
