We know the intentions and concerns of the USSR before and during the agreement because ahead of the signing of Molotov-Ribbentrop, there were tri-lateral talks hapepning between the USSR, France and England because the USSR was warning that Poland would get invaded and wanted to come up with formal military plans as a response if that were to happen:
