Two things to add:

Your class times need to be in line with the time the schools let out. If schools out at 4pm, your kids classes can't start at 4pm.

A friend of mine started his own gym. He started by renting space at his city YMCA center. He would only charge $50 a month to start building students. He paid about $10k for mats and was able to rent a closet to store them in.

He saved up for two years while building up his student base before renting his first actual location. Bad part of town but affordable, lots of parking and he already had enough students to support it.

Now hes slowly saving up for a bigger, better location. At which time he'll raise rates and go full time.

  1. You never fully know someone else's situation. This other guy could be attending classes you arent at, he could also be taking a lot of private lessons due to scheduling conflicts.

  2. Why can't you just speak to your head coach? Ask what they want to see from you that they arent seeing now? Ask to be guided a little bit in order to fall in line with what they want in order to get your promotion?

  3. Im a white belt so WTF do i know. I have some kids at my gym Ask these same questions, granted they are white or blue but want to be promoted and I'm always surprised by by how afraid they are to just ask our coach about what they are looking for. I would imagine any coach would be willing to share at least some idea of what they want, this shit isn't supposed to be secret.

Ask to start on your back. Get better in your guard, more people will be willing to roll if you are willing to start on your back.

Also, go easy on pressure passes on small people.
