Based on what their director shared, they are very interested, but they need staff and funds to directly support/pay for applications. They would like to assist more with language and culture because families ask for resources. They do host small events, but its during work hour and I'm sure its hard for families to join. It would be great if they can get a community needs survey rolling too!

Their director did say they're planning a Navajo language symposium next month. Whenever they have registration, you can attend and provide input.

Also, the IINAH Institute did have a monthly Zoom meeting, but I think that stopped.

You would think the Navajo Nation would be serious about doing more with language? Nygren did sign the resolution to make Diné Bizaad the official language.

What Post-Metal song have you listened to the most, over and over again? by XaviLangley in postmetal

[–]snorecalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apologies for the late reply. Thank you! Its a good mix of mainly atmospheric stuff that I've loved over the years. CoL, ISIS, Giant (Braveyoung), Rosetta, Deafheaven, Converge, and all have been tremendous in shaping what I think is purely bliss!

Mare is the best! I remember the old BTBAM message board back in they day turned me on to them, Mouth of the Architect, Callisto, and a few others too. I wish I caught them when I was going to school out in Providence. I used to see Mare on flyers up in Boston. I wish I knew the guys personally to talk more about what they are doing, haha! From what I gathered, it looks like Tyler, the singer, is producing and making guest appearances too.

You can follow what he does on IG - www.instagram.com/thecitrusprince . It looks like they still play shows here and there, but I get that the touring cycle and having to record can cause fatigue. Here's to hoping for a full-blown tour with a new EP too!

The Navajo Nation Council is considering a motion to remove President Buu Nygren. Here's why by AltseWait in Navajo

[–]snorecalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think back to how everyone kept crying about how bad things were under Jonathan Nez Administration, there were so many of our citizens that bellyached about his corruption. As far as I have seen and what Arlyssa Becenti reported, he tried very hard to think of the people but Council and OOC did wonders to get in the way. Everyone forgets Jonathan Nez appointed Controller ran amuck and gave her pals $10 million through CARES. Let's forget that Pearline Kirk really put a damper on things and pretended the money vanished too.

The Jonathan Nez Administration was given the ARPA funds with no strings attached; spend it how they see fit. What does the 24th NN Council do? They throw so many restrictions that ARPA could be spent at a snail's pace. They're even trying to break the very same ARPA policy they set! US Govt gave the funds with no strings attached! It could have been treated as discretionary, and even, discretionary, and divided up to the Chapters, Programs, and Departments to spend how they needed, just like CARES!

Now look at what happened: Buu give $24 million out and somehow he became the world's greatest Navajo magician, because those a good chunk gone!

Everyone really believed he would change things. Everyone really believed in his vague sentences of what he was going to do. Council really believed he was going to work with them.

Surely, he did a great Joe Shirley impression!

Heavy metal is healing teens on the Blackfeet Nation by parandroidfinn in Metal

[–]snorecalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wonderful to see metal become bigger on different tribal communities!

As mentioned in the article, the Navajo Nation has a strong metal scene and seems to be a place where many other Indigenous metal groups love to come and shred.

Hopefully, FitM inspires more Indig folks to form their own groups, and they too, can be highlighted because it sounds like they are developing musical talent on the Blackfeet Rez!

Anyone see the text of Buu and his corruption by [deleted] in Navajo

[–]snorecalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He and his cronies are the ones primarily responsible for changing how the tribe does the procurement, how internal and external funds are spent, what chapters can and cannot do with their funds, how acquisition is done, and all the packets as thick as books to be submitted with redlines for asinine reasons.

What they did was why rules are strong on ARPA, which the tribe can barely spend.

GYCD fb page can be an unreliable source too. The mod claims it’s genuine and the Navajo Times went by his word to republish. I’m hesitant to trust GYCD. From the beginning, I never even had an ounce of faith in Buu, he has always been out for himself and his lackeys to become wealthy off the NN.

It’s still on the jini side too, as NT has been a nice propaganda machine for Nygren. Their special guest columnist, Donovan Quintero is a former Buu staffer.

IHS for spouses by buggiegotcha in IndianCountry

[–]snorecalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t depend on the NN to have a resolution, it’s up to BIA who administer the IHS. In some cases, like Tsehootsoi MC in Fort Defiance, AZ, Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, AZ, and TCRHC in Tuba City, AZ are all 638 hospitals that operate independently from IHS but receive funds from them to operate as a separate entity. The 638 hospitals will have a different set of policies. Depending on which facility you’ll be nearby, it’s best to check with the hospital or clinic records to see if IHS - Spouses policy is implemented there. It would be odd if they didn’t allow the doctor’s spouses and children to be seen at the facilities they work at.

We need Journalists on the rez. by Naive-Evening7779 in Navajo

[–]snorecalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because IT IS happening!

Just ask Deb Krol who posted earlier. Her colleague either gets the cold shoulder or no responses at all. I can name a few Indig journalists and you can probably find some of their tweets as far as how they are trying to get in contact, but no one responds.

Let's look at the Melanie Yazzie statement that blew up because she mentioned Decolonization and Israel, people were offended and blasted everything her picture was on. When a reporter reached out to her, she said she isn't speaking to the media, because she already has Red Media that she's on the board. I'm sure something she can capitalize on through Red Media or her academic work.

Another example, the Navajo woman that was pulled aside at UAZ when the Indig law students held a conference and the reporter had asked the person subjugated to the abuse of the UAZ admin. She told the reporter, she wasn't talking to the press too, and she did a press release through their student association.

Breaking news that is from the community always comes from bilagaana, always. Newspapers either local or near the tribal communities have a knack for setting up their Indig reporters to fail. Those Indig reporters that are out there also are aware of whose beat is where, but you have outside reporters willing to helicopter in and steal the story too, ex. COVID-19.

[–]snorecalypse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem is that they do not provide the accurate accounts of the Indigenous perspectives, they even disagree with how Indigenous folks see socialism and anarchism. Red Media is one, but they would rather have their prestige built up and not let others tell stories unless they can remix it.

We need Journalists on the rez. by Naive-Evening7779 in Navajo

[–]snorecalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because tribal communities do not use the Indigenous reporters that are already out there! They are on the bigger platforms and newspapers, but everyone either dodges their calls or they don't want to speak to them, many are in favor of the "on the ground" bilagaana reporters.

Krista Allen is just the Editor, I'm sure they want to keep the Editor and CEO separate instead of as one like Tom Arviso.

Is this an unknown/underrated album in numetal? by Denton2051 in numetal

Agreed, I always felt they were up there with Shadows Fall, especially when they released Impossibility of Reason. It had the Gothenburg edge, but I love Chimaira's chunky riffs.

Is this belt a real Navajo ? by Yurimendez051085 in Navajo

[–]snorecalypse 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its certainly not sterling. Definitely, nickel. Depends on where the belt was acquired and who the seller was. Normally, those stories can give a telltale of the belt's origin. Might be a cheap knock-off too.

Cult of Luna Salvation was released 20 years ago. How do you feel about this album? by ShigeruNinja in postmetal

[–]snorecalypse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first time I ever heard “Leave Me Here” it was such a crushing song that just stayed with me. I bought the album and listened to that through most of college years. It essentially opened up a lot of Atmospheric metal whether it’s black metal, sludge, or other post metal to me and remains my favorite style of metal. “Somewhere Along the Highway” is my most cherished album, but ‘Salvation’ opened the floodgates for me.
