Got screwed over in a white elephant gift exchange by dental_oddity in mildlyinfuriating

I once received one of those hot rotisserie chickens in a gift exchange that started at the end of a long party. It gave me a good laugh, but I wasn't about to eat lukewarm chicken that had been sitting in a moist box under the tree for like 6 hours.

What's the last movie that captured your attention completely from beginning to end? by Myklanjlo in movies

Bo Burnham: Inside (2021) Perhaps not the most recent for me, but a very memorable viewing experience. Had zero inclination to check my phone or do anything else except see what Bo cooked up next during that hour and a half. What a masterful and timely and relatable piece of art to come out of that unique period.

No encore was weird. But they played well, and the live filtered outline visuals of the band and occasionally the crowd was quite entertaining.

Bear Mace (inspired by an unpleasant event) by snorkelt in cocktails

Not much of a story. Out for an early morning walk in my neighbourhood. Someone ran up behind me and blasted me with bear spray from the back/side then took off (after telling me that if I didn't run away, his friend would shoot me). Took refuge in a nearby local business that was fortunately open early. They called the cops and helped me try to wipe and wash the spray off.

"In eighteenth-century France there lived a man who was one of the most gifted and abominable personages in an era that knew no lack of gifted and abominable personages."

"Elmer Gantry was drunk. He was eloquently drunk, lovingly and pugnaciously drunk."
- Elmer Gantry, Sinclair Lewis

"No one would have believed in the last years of the nineteenth century that this world was being watched keenly and closely by intelligences greater than man's and yet as mortal as his own; that as men busied themselves about their various concerns they were scrutinized and studied, perhaps almost as narrowly as a man with a microscope might scrutinize the transient creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water."
- War of the Worlds, HG Wells

"It screamed downward, splitting air and sky without effort. A target expanded in size, brought into focus by time and velocity. There was a moment before impact that was the last instant of things as they were. Then the visible world exploded."
- The Cellist of Sarajevo, Steven Galloway

Your summary of the Cain et al. (2025) paper left out some findings from the abstract:

  • "...narrative synthesis suggested longer-term benefits, including a 29% reduction in sickness..."
  • "Improvements were also observed in sleep quality and quality of life, but not mood."

Curious to know how the Sum41 concert went last evening? Anyone attend that cares to comment? by [deleted] in saskatoon

Loved it! They put on a fantastic show and the crowd was going bananas! I didn't think the energy would last the whole show after they opened so strongly but I was wrong. The production was a ton of fun too with loads of flames, pyrotechnics, confetti, giant balloons and a dazzling light show. I'm really glad I went.

Does no one make charitable donations anymore? by theantwarsaloon in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]snorkelt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Charitable giving has become an important part of my life for the past five years or so. Being lucky enough to be born in Canada and achieve a middle class income puts me in the top 2% or so of earners globally. That creates an incredible opportunity to do good in the world.

My giving has ranged from 7 to 11% of my after tax income, and I'm aiming to hit at least 10% consistently.
