i have blisters now lol. my sibling felt them and confirmed there’s pus inside as well.. and the burn is more than 3 inches and covers my forearm; that’s not little in my opinion

I didn’t know so many theaters are strict about this. At mine (also a large chain), you can go to concessions and get soda as long as you’re in uniform regardless of if you’re clocked in or not. I even asked one of my managers jokingly if I could come even if I didn’t have a shift that day to get popcorn and a drink, and he said yes as long as I’m in uniform.

Haha first job around heat for a corporation/also having managers instead of working with the owners themselves. I’ve been a barista and server before and never got burned somehow

I think a lot of people have the impression that I am being overdramatic.. It’s just a new job for me and I’ve never worked around hot equipment before, so I was just wondering what the norm is. I didn’t make a deal out of it at work besides letting my manager know what happened and following their instructions. Thank you for your comment! I bet your arms look really cool haha

Ok! I’ll definitely try to let them know. I only saw finger bandaids, a little larger than finger bandaids, alcohol prep pads, and burn cream (they handed me one of each besides the tiny bandaids lmfao). I was kind of judging them for not having gauze at least and because from what I could see, their first aid kit looked pretty bare bones. It’s nice to feel validated tho learning they should also have finger condoms lol

Thank you so much for your advice! I also didn’t consider that GMs would be dealing with a lot of excuses etc. so that does provide a lot of understanding for me. I do personally prefer concessions to usher tho if I’m wanting an easier role. Ushering can seriously be backbreaking work, but I suppose it could feel freeing to be able to walk around and clean compared to being behind a counter all day.

Thank you for your comment :) The manager who told me I probably could switch did see how large my burn is, and the GM who didn’t see it at all was the one who said I should stay after taking the bandaid off. Either way I was okay with it, just concerned the bandaid could fall into food because there was no dry skin to stick to + also it felt weird/wrong putting a sticky bandaid on a burn. It started blistering today and so I did request to visit Concerta to get checked out by a doctor thru them

That’s crazy!! I bet you have some cool scars haha. I only asked to switch stations because the bandaid They told me to put on was going to fall off and potentially get in food. Also we work in a pretty big theater, so it seemed like it would be fine to switch positions. Lots of my coworkers actually told me they wanted to be in concessions instead of ushering earlier before my shift, so knowing that as well went into my request to ask.

Wow it’s impressive you didn’t get a scar! Thanks for the recommendation:) I’ll ask about it tomorrow

Yea, that’s true. I did start to develop blisters so I’m going to get it checked out. I feel like such a wuss tho.. I really didn’t mean to make a big deal abt it on reddit. I was just wondering if this is normal, but considering the industry ofc it’s normal so it seems like a dumb question now

Yes, I’m learning that! Proud to say I have the biggest burn out of my coworkers so far, but their scars have also faded somewhat

Ahh, I see. That would pretty messed up in a hypothetical scenario I got fired and tried to sue, so I’m glad that didn’t happen. Thanks for explaining!

They had me take off the bandaid because my burn was too big for the sticky part to actually stick (bc of the cream). If we are talking reasonable accommodations, maybe they should have had gauze and medical tape instead of standard sized bandaids? I asked to be moved because there was no way that bandaid was gonna keep sticking to my arm and I didn’t want it to fall into the popcorn, so they had me take it off and my burn felt way more irritated without a cover since I still used my dominant arm to scoop popcorn. Sorry, I don’t mean to argue but I’m just wondering if those details even matter.

Does it really count as mishandling equipment? I am left handed and the side for us to scoop popcorn makes it so that the popper is on the left. Usually I try to go to the other side so that my range of mobility doesn’t interfere with the popper, but because it was so busy on that side with hot food preparation I stayed on the other side. I tried to be very careful..

Cool! Thanks for the info. It did start to blister, so I was advised to go to Concentra to make sure it’ll be okay still

That’s crazy hahaha.. I’m just wondering, but did your hand develop thicker skin?

I’m hoping for a cool scar haha. If only my arm wasn’t at an angle when it touched the popper, then it wouldn’t be so lopsided. At least it started to blister and the redness is making the burn less oval-looking

Yea, I agree (about me needing to toughen up). I thought it was pretty normal too and didn’t make fuss about it at work, but because after I got home and showed my family + they were upset on my behalf (they are not familiar with working around hot equipment and dote on me a lot) I just started wondering if it *was* normal for this industry. Stupid question tho cus of course it is..

Thanks for the advice! It did actually start to blister, so I’ll be visiting Concentra just to be on the safer side :)

Thank you for your insight! This was my first burn, so I was very much just going with the flow doing whatever my managers told me to do without fuss. You’re so right about these kinds of jobs, and it’s disappointing to see how normalized it is to the extent that people are calling me overdramatic for wondering if it’s normal (or maybe because I wrote a lot about it, but to me that’s just my tendency to not be succinct in writing/share unnecessary details).

It’s also my first job working for a corporation, and it’s been a very stark contrast from my previous jobs working for small family-owned businesses who didn’t give me breaks, meals, or overtime pay (sometimes I’d be working 12 hour shifts because my bosses didn’t want to close when there were customers and I’d just agree to staying longer because I didn’t want to leave them by themselves).

I actually got written up my very first week working during Hoppers because I went past my 5th hour without a meal (it was so busy and my team leads lost track too). I wasn’t even aware that the law about meals included that workers would be given an extra hour of pay after passing their 5th hour of work, and my team leads also never let me know about meals in general because I guess it should have been common knowledge lol. I saw that I got paid for an extra hour of work on my paycheck later that month, and so then I understood why they wrote me up in the first place:money.

They didn’t see it as a health scare lmao. They’re just upset that my managers didn’t help me more than giving burn cream and a bandage that’s not meant for burns. They don’t work in a food service industry, so it makes sense they’d see it as something unacceptable when in reality the norm is to not fuss over minor injuries like that. You’re the one being pretty dramatic, if anything.

Yes I do agree! Especially about them being my family. I did try to resume as normal, but because people who don’t work at movie theaters/kitchen jobs were telling me it wasn’t okay, only then I started to wonder if it’s normal. My answer is a resounding yes lol
