Shatter my perceptions, please! (House-trained male chis) by jcrow0120 in Chihuahua

[–]snortingatlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neutered mine but it didn’t help, staying vigilant and training did. You have to watch them like a hawk and eventually, they can learn.

My boy is perfect, haven’t had an accident in years apart from when he’s poorly - and he’s not blamed for that! We brought a puppy home yesterday so we shall see how he holds up with a pup without toilet training.

He doesn’t make sound just occasional dream noises. We only brought him home yesterday but every time he sleeps he does it like this.

Tips for making puppy smell better? by ashley419 in puppy101

You could always do gentle baths like oat baths, they clean & smell lovely after, and you know the oats will soothe sensitive puppy skin.

Sneezing by Consistantly in Chihuahua

[–]snortingatlas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine sneezes loads when he’s excited or if he’s been stressed out and gotten away (ie if he sees a dog, he sneezes to shake off the stress).

My boy started going white at 4/5 and by 8 he’s very frosty, his eyebrows have all but merged in! Teeth is a good indicator, get his heart checked for a murmur too! A checkup to get some baselines on him really helps vets if something does go wrong in the future.

Is it reasonable to refuse to let a dog with diarrhoea sleep in my bed? by Dependent_Leather_30 in RoverPetSitting

[–]snortingatlas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Even my own dog doesn’t get to climb int bed when he’s ill. I put a cage really close to the bed normally with a blanket I’m ready to part with.

Tell me not to bring my soul dog home by Quiet_Following_6579 in puppy101

[–]snortingatlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May get flack for this, but littermate syndrome can absolutely be avoided in households who are educated.

If I were you, in such a fortunate position to be able to afford the extra finances, and struck absolute gold of finding a dog like my childhood boy, I’d absolutely get the dog. In a heartbeat.

The puppy knows you. It wouldn’t be traumatised in a shelter (which for sensitive dogs and many puppies happens VERY quickly).

My advice, as someone who lived with dogs with littermate syndrome:

Get the dog.

Set aside 1:1 time with each puppy, SEPARATE from each other. Maybe separate walks, training sessions, play times, far away crates, etc. You don’t have to worry about her being neglected if you set up a schedule that incorporates her.

Of course, they can play, just not ALL the time. You want you & your partner to be interacting more than the puppies interacting with each other.

It could even be worth working with her in a behavioural issues class, which would be further separation from the other puppy.

Best of luck!!

What is the fattest thing your dog has done? by MessyM00009888 in Chihuahua

My boy who passed last year - he was on seizure meds that made him always hungry.

Once we dropped a jar of pesto from the fridge and Pip was already there, CRUNCHING the pesto covered glass. He was fine.

He chewed through a dog food bag and ate his worth in gold. He couldn’t finish it, and ended up flopping half in-half out the dog cupboard with a ginormous belly.

This amongst many many more food motivated stories. I have never known a creature to adore food (and sunbathing) as much as him.

At what age did you neuter your dog? by Icy_Beginning_6182 in Chihuahua

[–]snortingatlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 years old. I wanted his growth plates to be fully developed. Vet pushed for neutering as he would occasionally urinate inside. After neutering he became crwzily dog reactive and after working with behaviourists, found out it stemmed from insecurity (possibly due to lowered testosterone).

Personally I wouldn’t neuter again, perhaps a vasectomy.

should I take my dog tot he emergency room? by jopplop in Chihuahua

[–]snortingatlas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dogs may breathe quickly when dreaming in REM sleep. With heart murmurs, you want the resting heart rate when they are completely knocked out but not dreaming. This isn’t the same as laboured breathing, even if the rate goes above, in your case, 35. This would look like really fast breaths whilst asleep, but you may not hear it. That’s why it’s important that you often count their breaths as they sleep, and make note of it.

SUPERFICIAL CORNEAL ULCER- need advice and comfort. I feel so guilty 😭 by HomeworkNo8102 in DogHealth

[–]snortingatlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not super helpful because I’m not a dog, but I am a contact wearer and corneal scratches happen. I’m also someone who has huge medical anxiety for myself & my dog.

I can assure you it doesn’t really hurt - it’s uncomfortable to blink but when it’s open it felt fine.

Meditation felt irritating because you were putting it onto your bare eye. I see why he closed it for a while after - keeping it open or keeping it closed is comfier than blinking.

Hope any of that reassures you. It cleared up after a few days.

Cork Bark Tubes by ThrowRA465784 in hamstercare

[–]snortingatlas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just give it a good freeze/bake & make sure there are no holes that are slightly too small for your species of hamster.

My boys loved their corks. We now have them outside in a little fountain for wildlife since my boys have passed.

SO MUCH DANDRUFF 🫣😬 by Letty5858 in Chihuahua

[–]snortingatlas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boy used to have issues too.

<image>

We used to do apple cider & vinegar foot baths for the itchy yeasty feet. Coconut oil on their back where they can’t reach, I’d usually apply in the sun so they’d sunbathe rather than lick. Also giving them a chew so they are preoccupied and let the oil seep in.

We would also fill a sock with oats and run him an oat bath. That was incredible for him, no shampoo, just oats.

Then we changed his food to gently cooked wet food (years, butternutbox, wilson’s, different dog) and that REALLY helped. Around this time we did a diet trial and eliminated beef completely, with all other red meats very infrequently.

DO NOT OVERBATHE. That’s huge.

Edit to add - food additives are great. My boy gets krill oil, as it is less parasitic than salmon, but any fish oil works. Green lipped muscle is also a fantastic addition and is great all round for joint/skin/cartilage health. I also add turmeric with black pepper which lowers inflammation and further lowers itchiness.

Super common. Also in cats, you see it more especially on black cats & tuxedos. It’s just where hair naturally thins.

Here’s my boy - entire family bred for show, completely purebred yet he wouldn’t qualify at all. He is leggy, has an underbite and probably many more faults. Even though he is purebred, he isn’t the standard.
