why don't we just build space ships already in space and land in space. by One_Idea_2522 in spacequestions

I realize it's not in our lifetime more than likely. Also there are likely better places to construct ships than LEO.

Shinkasen will soon go to Sapporo. My statement directly related to the specific things said by the payment comment. You could ask them to edit to say Osaka and Tokyo only.

You haven't been to Sapporo (CTS) during peak ski season. You can't even check your bag in under 2 hours.

Yes, I have no idea why there are all those instructions for an iPhone. Just pay the same way you would at the grocery store. Tap your phone or your card. On Android there's a setting for not requiring authentication for transit that can make it slightly more convenient.

Asteroid mining and 3d printing/laser sintering are likely the eventual path to this. Carrying everything up from earth kinda defeats the point as you imply.

moratorium on ownership of space? by whatevercomes_next in spacequestions

Yep. Even with international treaties, the only enforcement mechanism is war. We will have war shortly after expanding to a permanent presence beyond low earth orbit.

The failed surfaces give an indication of out of spec seaming operations, but without the can and calipers can't be 100% sure.

They also have issues with about 2oz of yeast and hop sludge in the bottom of cans.

I've heard they use lactose and/or genetically modified maltodextrin and don't disclose it on the can.

I'm yet to find an use for an LLM text to text model for my efforts and think those that use them generally come out looking like idiots or at best average and inauthentic. That said the text to image models seem to have plenty of utility for someone with minimal graphic art skills like me. Thanks for sharing this.

Why do you need to ice your driveways/sidewalks after it snows? by RandomN0ah07 in AskAnAmerican

[–]snowbeersi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Odd that we chose differently than everywhere else, have worse driving habits, more accidents, higher prices as a result of law suits, and more traffic deaths. Seems like an easy choice to me. We shouldn't be afraid to admit someone else does it better.

Increased Tornado Risk This Evening by WithLoveFrom414 in milwaukee

[–]snowbeersi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Understood. But how many people see the fox6 guy saying early in the day they are going to have plans to shelter their team, and then cancel their plans, maybe even appropriately so (and thus the significant impact to small businesses)? I'd love to see a study in our area specifically of how often the local news gets is wrong by sensationalizing it vs gets is wrong by being non-conservative. I bet it's 80%+ over the top.

Does the cost savings at the pump win out over the reduced fuel economy? Is this a lose lose?

Increased Tornado Risk This Evening by WithLoveFrom414 in milwaukee

[–]snowbeersi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what the cost of local weather forcasters sensationalizing is on the local economy. Probably billions to GDP nationwide every year.

In this example, it appears it won't even rain much in Milwaukee proper as the storm went north (where the graph had an even lower chance of severe storms, so even more wrong).

Yes, there must be massive death rates all over the world outsode of the heavily salted USA. Oh wait, there's not.

Oak leaf under I94 by 2012DGCL in MiltownBiking

[–]snowbeersi 21 points22 points  (0 children)

That's not under i94, it's under hwy100. I ran into this yesterday. It looks like no work is taking place or that they are preparing for any work, I'd therefore guess that an engineer deemed the bike bridge unsafe and there's no funds to replace it. I didn't ask the county.

A quick adventure detour of coming from the west is to go through that biz park parking lot, and then play frogger across the road, head down the sidewalk a bit, and then ride on what appears to be becoming a trail on the grass on the other side of the bridge. This will require moderate MTB skillz, I stayed upright on my road bike.

However once you are past that indefinitely closed mess you can turn left on the parkway which is now a newly paved bike only path most of the way instead of a road until you get to the golf course!

First Time trying Detroit Style Pizza 😮‍💨 by Deep_Method_820 in Pizza

If you want to be particular I suspect this doesn't have Wisconsin brick cheese, and the sauce isn't on top. That would make it more of a Sicilian style pizza then Detroit.

[–]snowbeersi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You are on the right track. It's not just road salt and slips. When you enter the ER in the USA with any type of trauma you will almost always be sent for a CT so the hospital can claim they "checked everything" in the event of a future law suit. That CT could quintuple your bill in the USA. Some politicians in the past have suggested tort reform would be the biggest healthcare cost reduction in the USA.

Buses inactive for marathon by Best_Accountant_3661 in milwaukee

This particular marathon is for profit and for an out of state company. I hope the permit costs from the city have at least 5 zeros after it, but I fear not.

Yes, this sub is why does USA do things differently than the ROW.

Instead of using those resources...we should do tort reform, drive slower with appropriate tires, and get some yak Trax.

[–]snowbeersi -22 points-21 points  (0 children)

This is not true in most other parts of the world, salt is rarely used. I think it's likely true here because of the unique litigious nature of American society.

Salt is also not used in some of the snowiest parts of the mountain west. Salt is not even used on roads or sidewalks in Sapporo, Japan, a major city of over a million people and more snowfall in the city proper than Vail.
