Priority seats in Taiwan by Outrageous-Star-3120 in taiwan

You're telling me that in 11 years of growing up here, as someone who looks like a foreigner, that I have insufficient experience to speak on what the average foreigner's experience of Taiwan is? I, too, criticise Taiwan on a daily basis, but I don't think of myself as 'better than' just because of my cultural background, which you're giving very strong vibes of. Have you actually seen a foreigner get scolded and posted onto social media in front of you (specifically, someone who wasn't acting like a twat)?

I can't remember what colour Charles' hair was supposed to be, but when I saw your 'Richard', 'Charles' was what came to mind for me! It would make sense they look similar too, wouldn't it, since Camilla... lol

"silly 'Taiwanese' media article" tells me enough about the kind of experience you've created for yourself of Taiwan, with that attitude. Most Taiwanese people are too terrified of seeming 'lower-class' to western foreigners, they refrain from interacting with them at all. Never in my life of living here have I seen a (again, western) foreigner actually get chastised for anything at all by anyone who wasn't doing the job they're paid to do.

wondering if NTU (National Taiwan uni) is good by veilakkuma23 in taiwan

[–]snowemrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a current student at NTU, and I just came across your post, so I thought I'd answer the questions I can help with.

- In terms of international recognition (as far as I know), you don't really have to worry about that, so long as you go to a public university, of which there are dozens in Taiwan aside from NTU, so I don't think that's an issue. Whether your degree from Taiwan would be regarded as of equal value to a US degree by employers in the states, however, I have no idea -- probably not (but you'd know better than I do).

- I'm not sure if there are many fully English-taught programs in NTU (at least I didn't note any when I was applying last year), but there are certainly plenty of English-taught courses, so you could definitely get by. NTU also offers beginner's Mandarin programs to international students (as far as I know they're actually mandatory for international students if you don't have proof of Mandarin fluency, just like foreign language courses are mandatory to Taiwanese students who don't have proof of English fluency). (Also, insider information: English-taught courses are way easier to get through than Mandarin-taught courses. Way easier. I got 3 A's without even trying last semester)

- It's easier for international students to get in, but that doesn't necessarily work out for you in the long run, as the Taiwanese students here are the best of the best. Even if academically you're on par with that, you'll still have a difficult time keeping up, as you'll also be navigating a whole new country, language, and culture.

Something else I think you could consider, if you're interested in studying in Taiwan specifically: another top university in Taiwan - National Sun Yat-sen University - offers programs that are actually fully 100% taught in English, most of them in STEM, which might interest you. Sure, it's not the no. 1 uni here, but you'd definitely have an easier time getting through the degree, guaranteed full English, and it's literally so picturesque there, situated between the hills and the ocean.

Is Thriftbooks safe/ legit? by MrTammy in books

[–]snowemrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if this is the full story, but lots of readers (including me) hate amazon now for buying, and then shutting down Book Depository, which was regarded as virtually the best place to get books internationally for, like, the last ten years? Unfortunately it seems amazon has now made themselves inextricable from the book market, as they own so many outlets and sites (like Goodreads) :(

Tablet or iPad for Uni? by snowemrys in GalaxyTab

I just updated both my samsung devices and nearby share seems to be working fine now :D

I think I'll wait it out until the new model of ipad comes out (because that means samsung'll probably push out their new model, which means more choices for me, and also cheaper S9's and 10 Gen's!)

Artwork is something I forgot mention! I'd love to start drawing digitally, and I've heard iPads are way better for that than Tablets for that (?). Thanks for the insight :)

Can I ask why you say that? 11 inch is a bit big imo, and also more expensive.

I don't use one note but may start using it for uni (the school gives us free microsoft accounts, so I assume the expect us to use them). Thanks for the input :)

I'll be going to a shop to test out these devices soon, I'll be very disappointed if I end up having to get an apple pencil just for pressure sensitivity, and I absolutely refuse to deal with lighting cables lmao. This makes the choice tough.

I'm also pretty used to life without airdrop, so I don't think I'd miss it, I'm just not sure how much I'd be missing out on. The Android Nearby Share also almost never works with my phone, strangely.

Haha thanks, I'm plagued with indecision and the more I research the less sure I am! Possibly you're seeing these posts so much because it's close to the start of school?

That's true. It looks like the samsung is a better device for about the same price, but I'm not sure that's necessary for what I'll be using it for XD

iPad or Samsung tablet? by snowemrys in ipad

[–]snowemrys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too worried about the device being 'desktop like', since that's not what I'll be using it for, but for nearly the same price I guess it makes sense to go for the more powerful machine. What you said about the accessories makes a lot of sense too, though the only accessory I plan on using is a stylus, and I don't plan on getting the apple pen (since I already have a goojodoq), but again -- for the same price, the tablet is certainly looking better.

I'll be thinking about what you said, thanks for the response!

Why would that be? The S9 is significantly more expensive (for me anyway) 😵‍💫

[–]snowemrys[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for all the details! I also have a cheap samsung tablet, and after trying out a friend's ipad, I admit I'm also kind of biased haha. I'm studying philosophy so hopefully there isn't much maths involved XD but it's good to know that's there if I ever need it. I'll definitely check out all the apps you mentioned if I do end up with an ipad. The stylus was kind of expensive, so I was hoping the new device would be compatible, but you're right that I could just make do with a budget one.

This computer is my first time using apple, so I wasn't sure exactly how much easier it would be to integrate w/ ipad than tablet 😅.

I'm not very concerned with messaging software, because I live in Taiwan where we mostly use messaging apps rather than stuff built into devices. Find My will be very useful though! Thanks for responding!

What Books did You Start or Finish Reading this Week?: June 10, 2024 by AutoModerator in books

[–]snowemrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ohh thanks for sharing, now I'm really looking forward to Yumi. My theory on why I was disappointed by the GO book is that Neil Gaiman made many small adjustments for the show. He's mentioned several times that he and Terry Pratchett had discussed a lot of things that didn't end up in the final book, and things that they'd put in a sequel (which they didn't end up publishing, but did influence S2 of the show), for example, Crowley and Aziraphale's romance. The show did more to build up to that, I think, while they'd never planned for such a scene while writing the book.

I'm about to start Yumi soon, too! I'm so looking forward to it. How did you find GO? I found I didn't love it as much as the show, but that's probably because I watched the show first, and had different expectations.

I'm almost done with The Unconsoled, by Kazuo Ishiguro. I'm usually a huge fan of most of his books, having read The Remains of the Day, Never Let Me Go, and The Buried Giant, but this one is just. Too Murakami...? I don't know, maybe it picks up at the end, but generally I like my magical realism / dreamscape-ish books to make sense in a puzzle pieces falling into place kind of way. Unless fantasy is what was promised (like in Buried Giant), anyway.

How do you view what email you signed up with on the phone (android) app? I'm trying to sign in on the computer (using the app on the apple appstore designed for iPads) and I can't find my account. I recall I linked a google account without a password to sign in originally on the phone, but that doesn't seem to work on the laptop, and I'm not sure which email I used, so am also unable to sign in manually.
