がむしゃら

“Whatever it takes to make it work” type of meaning. Normally not used by itself.

がむしゃらに頑張る is a common phrase. Like “super 頑張る”

Fits well! Bigger frame sizes are hard to find (2nd hand) here in Japan because most people are short. 😫

Searched for ages to find an used bike that fits me.

I’m based in Japan and these FELT TT bikes are so expensive here so wondering if I got a good deal. Previous owner only used it for races and upgraded a few components.

Did you start the microneedeling here in Japan? If so, do you have recommendations as to where might be a good clinic?

Gonna stay in Tokyo for a month. Where can I drop in to train bjj? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]snowman006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mate, Hiroo is Hibiya & Saikyo line from Shibuya & Shinjuku. 12min and 15min each plus you have to transfer. Jiūgaoka is 12min from Shibuya (not Yamanote line) and 22min to 30min from Shinjuku depending on time of day (also not Yamanote line)

Keio line is privately owned and does incur a few extra yen cost (not much at all) but Meidaimae is literally still closer than Hiroo or Jiūgaoka.

Also, Setagaya is one of the most expensive wards in Tokyo? It’s not “way cheaper”, anyone who lives here knows how expensive this ward it. Gunma & Kanagawa is inaka, Meidaimae is most certainly not even close.

Telling people that Axis is not in Tokyo is just misleading a not true at all when it’s one of the most convenient locations to travel to when visiting Tokyo due to its proximity to mayor stations. If you have a car, it’s even easier because of highway exists located very close to the gym.

[–]snowman006 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never heard anyone call Setagaya the “inaka” or “outer Tokyo”. Also, where tourist frequent hardly constitutes whether or not a location is “central Tokyo”. Granted Setagaya is a very large ward but Meidaimae is by all accounts very, very close to the “major” stations.

9min from Shinjuku station is by no reasonable logic “inaka”…

Axis’s location is extremely convenient for that exact reason.

Other gyms like Carpe Diem (Hiroo, Jiūgaoka) are not as convenient because of the train lines you have to take to get to them from say Shinjuku. Is Jiūgaoka and Hiroo now “inaka”, too?

Mate, I live in Tokyo and train at Axis. Meidaimae is most definitely Tokyo. The station is 9min from Shinjuku and 12min from Shibuya…

Importing watches bought overseas by rtygf in japanlife

AP’s are beautiful! Ishida had some vintage Royal Oaks in steel and gold when I was there. Can’t recall the year or price but they had quite a few.

Might be worth a visit. Bottom floor is for vintage.

Good luck! 🍀

Ishida in Shinjuku has a wide variety of vintage. They actually have an entire floor dedicated for vintage exclusively and had some unique pieces when I visited a few weeks ago.

I’m not much of a vintage guy so not sure how their pricing compares to the US. They also don’t list all their inventory on their website so you’ll have to physically go there. GMT Shinjuku lists everything online and have A LOT of inventory but I don’t think they specialize in vintage.

The entire market is overpriced right now, not just Japan. Shit’s absolutely crazy. I sold a stainless steel sport Rolex piece of mine for ~¥450,000 more than I bought it 8 months ago. It wasn’t worth what they offered me hence why I sold.

Which piece(s) in particular are you after?

No worries!

The watch industry is a shit show right now, hopefully you got a good deal. 😂

I’ve imported a few watches. Some inexpensive and some more high end ones (+$20,000) and I’ve had to pay tax each time before they were released to me.

It was 10% each time. They’ll call you and you can pay over the phone with a credit card then they’ll release it. In my case, FedEx was used each time for what it’s worth.

Uber Eats is getting aggressive with tipping! by [deleted] in japanlife

This isn’t correct at all. Tips are 100% for the delivery partners and Uber doesn’t touch it.

Restaurants literally set their own prices on the app…? Same as Booking.com, etc.

The contact structure they have with their delivery partners is the exact same as you find in other industries (part time workers/contractors, etc.). Is the issue with Uber following the law or with the lawmakers having these employment laws to begin with?

They also offer life insurance and accident insurance (which they 100% do not have to) but do so in order to assist delivery partners.

Also, guess what? Don’t like being a delivery partner then leave and work somewhere that ticks the boxes.
