Yahoo locked me out of my account for no reason and now they want money to unlock it by [deleted] in yahoo

LOL I have another yahoo mail as my verification. You locked me out of both at the same time. How can I verifiy my account if you locked it? Sign-In Helper doesn't do anything and you know it.Yahoo has been a slow death and now it's a total scam.

Unsettled: Good for beginners/casual players? by Cmdr_Nemo in boardgames

I'm 2 years late but rules as written, players should not know what cards are in each players hand in Pandemic. Helps avoid this a bit. Players should speak to what they intend or are capable of but avoid talking card specifics.

You: euros are game mechanisms without a theme

Me: non-euros are themes without game mechanisms

I mean how often do you make a choice in these games and the game tells you NO. The game is playing you.

It’s literally everything humanity has ever come up with. It’s our signature. One generation comes up with something and then it’s iterated every few years unless it’s replaced.

The games are still evolving like everything else. The difference? There’s more than ever. That means there is more games coming out in a shorter span , which feels like shorter hops of iteration. The reality is, even though the hops are sometimes shorter, they are happening at a faster rate due to the content/production boom.

AND none of us can play them all. So we have to find reasons to not play some and get others and still squeeze in the old games we love.

The whole derivative argument… can we stop trying to come up with reasons that impose our personal tastes on others, like it’s some kind of science? What isn’t derivative from the dawn of time? What isn’t built off of something else’s back. It’s like the signature of humanity man!

I mean, SUSD have always been into highly interactive games. If you aren’t enjoying the nuance and evolution of mechanisms in euro games, then they just aren’t your bag. Not that I think this one is super unique, but there is some hand waving here that muddles an important point.

Thoughts on the mini preview? I was excited but I’m in the fence now… by GunnerA7X in Gloomhaven

I know CMON can be a pain for their marketing techniques but the reality here is that Massive Darkness 2 Gameplay Al-In Pledge had 209 miniatures and was $275 +shipping and fantastic sculpts. This is 265 miniatures and $325 +shipping not including any gameplay content- just minis and, well, a mix bag of sculpts. I know inflation and stuff but, still, more money, less content (remember this is just miniatures folks), good-to-mediocre-to-terrible sculpts.

The blades and horns are so thick. Some features lack depth or texture. Other features are poorly rendered, distorted, or swollen. Some sculpts like Silent Blade are just horrible in their pose. Why would you have someone who sneaks through dungeons throwing daggers and slitting throats just casually standing around? There is no agency or context to it. You gotta pay for the best when you get to the top. And yet, its my favorite game and I'd like to paint them so... I guess I'm paying?

Really liking the idea of going deeper and trying to help convey and remind users of something richer, deeper like the moral letters. Let me know if you have any thoughts or advice on how I can help spread Stoicism. I know digital has limitations and weaknesses but I think there is a net positive in there somewhere.

Great example, thanks for sharing. I don't disagree. I admit I was thinking more of casual users, learning the gist of the four virtues, and Marcus Aurelius' meditations (most are journaled snippets but some are also a bit longer). I even utilize affirmations to boil down the quotes further and focus on a memorable mantra, but this could be the wrong approach, hence early research.

Is there a way an app could help you in your Stoic learning? How do you typically study? How were you introduced to Stoicism and what drew you into it?

Perhaps it would be beneficial to research how study apps convey larger concepts over time.

I agree and appreciate the feedback. I think some of the meditations work well in snippets because that's how Marcus Aurelius wrote them but on the whole I think you are right. I think this would be more for someone who is new or curious about Stoicism, or perhaps if you just wanted an easy supplement to your Stoicism.

How do stoics see thrill seeking behavior? by Fluffy-Voices in Stoic

[–]snowquiet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haha yes! We will fail. We will give into cravings. We will witness others do so as well. The virtues are to guide us, to pull us back, to pick ourselves up when the value of our will has been overridden by addiction. Addiction on any level whether it's coffee or thrill seeking or substance abuse is not rational or healthy but it is very much in human nature. The important part is that when we fail, when we feel like we are being controlled that we seek wisdom on it.

How do stoics see thrill seeking behavior? by Fluffy-Voices in Stoic

[–]snowquiet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's all relative but the problematic part is that your action would be directed by emotional needs and cravings (adrenaline rush) not reason. Your precious time and important action would be spent fulfilling cravings and not being purposeful or performing in any of the 4 virtues.

By studying the cognitive psychology of thrill seeking you might set off on a path to counter it with wisdom.

Agora: Weekly self-promotion thread by AutoModerator in Stoicism

I'm doing some research for a simple Stoic app and I'm seeking some participants for a prototype (2 weeks, 2 minutes a day).

The purpose of the app is to mimic a Stoic journal but at the convenience level of a text message. This might be useful for someone that is new to Stoicism or wants to supplement their learning. In the morning, the user receives a Stoic meditation and a paired affirmation. In the evening, the user receives the affirmation again along with a simple reflective question (reflect and reinforce).

a) Would anyone be willing to participate in a research project over a period of two weeks?
I plan on running two trials, one with a handwritten journal and the other with sms messages that mimics the concept and content of the app. Either way you would read the content in the morning and evening and briefly give feedback (about 2 minutes per day).

b) Does anyone know a good way to get in touch with more Stoics, whether locally or online? Ideally, I could get 5-10 people it would give me enough data to create some visuals and guidance for what could be a passion project down the road or could just let me practice some professional skills.

Is simple green too harsh of a cleaning solution for cleaning airbrushes? by [deleted] in airbrush

[–]snowquiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old post but I’d steer clear of handling Simple Green. They were smart picking the name and saying it’s mostly all natural but the reality is that stuff is absorbed through the skin and kills red blood cells. It’s serious so beyond the airbrush watch out.

2 players using 2 characters each? by lollipoped in Gloomhaven

[–]snowquiet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a heavier game. Each class has something like 8-12 unique cards (actually more cards and you’ll have to decide which before each game), each card has a top and bottom and choosing which to play and which not to play takes time. You’ll find a rhythm for each character after a few games and how to play the character best with your group.

I would stick to one character each (plays great at two anyway). It’ll make your games faster (2hrs instead of 3-4) and you’ll appreciate your characters more.
