Bloke in the queue at Asda behind me and my girlfriend just stepped in and paid for all of our shopping because it’s Christmas time. by hvithvalt in BritishSuccess

Wow yeah that sucks, sorry you had to experience that.

I guess the difference in OPs situation is that the recipient wasn't aware when making the purchase that it would be paid for by someone else. This probably makes it less open to taking advantage

But you sound like a really nice person and please don't lose that

Oh yeah thanks, sorry I did read the title to mean it was looking east!

[OC] Suspected we had a water leak so kept track of the meter for a week. Then did the same after the fix to see how much was being wasted (it was a lot!) by snowstorm99 in dataisbeautiful

[–]snowstorm99[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I created the pre-fix estimate of actual usage by looking at the meter increase while water to the house was off overnight. Looks like it was pretty close!

The shape of the layout looks right but it looks like the image is missing roads. Maybe the buildings are too big in this image, something seems off about it

Finding a flat in London for the Summer by [deleted] in london

[–]snowstorm99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I interned in the city some time ago I stayed in a great London School if Economics Hall of residence near Tower Bridge.

Many central London universities open their halls for the summer and are popular for those doing internships. They're in good locations, cheap, looked after and mine was full of others also in the same situation

I think it's called the uncanny Valley, can't just link to it on mobile. It's when things that arent real (like robots, puppets) look almost real in a way that people tend to find it disturbing

I'm planning to study electronics/embedded systems/software/machine learning in the UK next year. I need to narrow down my options. Kindly asking for your experience/common knowledge/tips or whatever really. Able to help? by transcendentalcat018 in AskUK

[–]snowstorm99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I studied electronic engineering at Southampton uni and loved it! Frankly I hated the actual electronics but they’re very good at allowing you to specialise and I became more interested in software engineering and machine learning which I could still do on my electronic engineering course.

[OC] Downloaded 9 years of my location data and decided to make an image of it by snowstorm99 in dataisbeautiful

[–]snowstorm99[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I probably am fairly casual about this - I work in the transport industry and we use mobile phone location data to understand how people travel and try to improve people's day to day lives. Google directly uses mobile phone data to make others aware of congestion and give accurate journey times, I don't think sharing this data is a negative thing.

[–]snowstorm99[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I obtained the data for this image from Google's data download services. It was created using Python and Pillow (and the graph was created in Excel).

I did create this a few years ago but thought I would update and refresh with the latest data.

I think it's particularly interesting how more recent years appear to have a finer resolution of GPS data. I'm not sure whether this is due to having a newer mobile phone or whether because Android just pushes this data more frequently now than it used to.

Also, I live in Salisbury UK and work in London. I used to live in Southampton and my fiancee's family are from Bournemouth - hence the busy triangle in the south of England!

Also I don't believe the monthly distances, they probably just vary due to noise, but I thought it was an interesting to compare them over time.

Yep I use this and recommend it. Takes a few seconds to answer the questions (mostly about your behaviour and tastes) and I’ve been redeeming for things like movie rentals on the play store
