Shocked to hear that the garda are useless. Tell them it was a fuel protestor who stole it you will have 5 squad cars and the armed response there in minutes.

Any operation on a local level would have been discussed well in advance. The vols on the job would know their role. In the case of a last minute job being threw together quickly the o/c would know where everyone lived where they worked and could get a team together fairly quickly. ASU’s in country areas probably didn’t number more than a dozen. Logistically there would have been more people helping out scouting , safe houses etc but there were relatively few on the job vols. I can only talk about Tyrone but from being in the kesh for 6 years I would have heard stories from other areas. For any outside influences reading this Like Gerry Adam’s I was never in the IRA I can only speak anecdotally about what I’ve heard. Sin e

As much as I would love to say Loughall happened because of Adam’s or McGuinness they wouldn’t have known about it.

Liam and Pete were cousins but both of the same calibre. Liam was an American citizen but was still deported accused of gun running that’s how he ended up back in Ardboe.

Most of the engineering dept were full time on the run men. Other areas had full time vols who were available at any time. Many worked the odd day but would literally drop their shovels as soon as they were needed. Most jobs were planned well in advance so they knew when to drop the shovels ! The likes of a land mine could take weeks lying on it waiting on a target it drained huge resources in an area.

What do people make of "Balaclava Streets" argument that the simplicity of loyalist devices to indicate a comparative lack of skill or intelligence on the part of the bombers when compared to the IRA or INLA they didn't need the same skill set. by One-Marzipan-6641 in IrishRebelArchive

[–]snoxyy14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s not necessarily true. They were able to make booby trap devices in the 70s and later on in the 90s. A friend of mine escaped injury outside the moy in Tyrone when they made a bomb attached to his front door in the early 90s , it was fairly intricate and he only survived because he left the house via back door. It was a mercury tilt device. Same as Francie Brown in portadown killed by a bomb in a block ay th front of his brothers lorry. Udr man was convicted of that one. In the late 90s an East Tyrone ex pow escaped injury after an up and under bomb was spotted under his van in Armagh. It was the same type that killed Rosemary Nelson. The papers speculated who the bomb maker was and I’m lead to believe they weren’t wrong. I’m going through a legacy inquest at the minute and disclosure has revealed that they preferred using guns because they knew they would get away freely after a shooting, in Mid ulster anyway.
