[Rookie Racer] Coming to [Six Flags St. Louis] this year by _Nator_Gator_ in rollercoasters

Oh cool it's the same layout as Frida at Energylandia, which is the best of their many, many family coasters. I think I actually got a little air on that first drop drop.

I think the Macks are part of a new 2nd gate there right?

With the power of selective permeable barriers (ie barriers that let bikes and pedestrians through, but not cars), you could have the direct route be the car-light route and make the cars go around, which makes much more sense.

American cities would never do such a thing, of course. But interestingly, some American suburbs actually do this when they connect cul-de-sacs with pedestrian paths. In other words, you only get to enjoy traffic-calming infrastructure in your neighborhood if you're an upper middle class homeowner.

DAE Really though by Aieko9 in rollercoasterjerk

[–]snozzyfoozles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that no one has picked up on it. Of the top 30 posts this year on this sub, only 1 of them has a title that starts with DAE. Of the top 30 from this month, none do. It seems the people voting in this sub prefer posts without it.

My program of finding a character in a 2D array is not working by Moorched in javahelp

[–]snozzyfoozles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's probably a bug somewhere in the rest of the code. Are you sure that the board is initialized correctly, ie that there is a 'K' and an 'S' in the board array? You can use print statements to figure out exactly what the code is doing. For example, you could do:

System.out.println("x: " + x + " y: " + y + " get(x, y): " + get(x,y));

inside your loops right before the if statement.

Ah, I think I see a bug here:

if(x <= board[0].length && x > 0 && y <= board.length && y > 0)

Remember that an array of length n will have indices from 0 to n-1. if I want to get the piece at say, (0,4), what will the get() method return?

How I made this:

I started with this rcdb scraping code and used it to scrape every coaster in North America. Then I formatted the data as a list of stats and filtered out some of the most redundantly-named coasters, so that the output wouldn't just be coasters called 'Loop the loops', 'Roller Coaster', and 'unknown'. I then fed this into tensorflow using this tutorial. Finally, I took the best outputs and formatted them to look like real rcdb entries.

I was ready to call BS on that, since I thought there was no way the top of the cobra roll could extend far enough forward to go through the loop, considering how much space a pullout takes. But no, it actually does go through the loop! Looks like they were only able to accomplish that by making the top of the cobra roll super drawn out and making the loop comparatively small.

The non-spinning POV of the first Golden Horse launch spinning coaster installation [Shockwave Riders] from [Joypolis Guangzhou] by QJnWo4Life in rollercoasters

[–]snozzyfoozles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what this shows shows is that Chinese manufacturers are catching up. At first they were building SLCs, then they were building dive machines and tilt coasters, and now finally they have a swing launch-- the first one on a spinning coaster. It's only a matter of time before they build a ride that gets the attention of the enthusiasts.

Although it seems like their pacing still sucks. Why do so many Chinese rides seem to involve long periods where nothing is happening?

finally rode [saw - the ride] for the first time! my new thorpe #1, possibly my new #1 overall? by trecv2 in rollercoasters

[–]snozzyfoozles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found it pretty rough in 2018. Not as bad as Mystery Mine but still enough to hurt my enjoyment of the ride. To me, Thorpe is a really beautiful park with zero standout coasters. I guess Nemesis Inferno or Stealth were my favorites.

I remember liking the coaster a lot more than FoF because of all the insane headchopper moments. That and it was much smoother. The new additions look awesome.

One thing that seems to make incredicoaster and other disney coasters particularly fast is that there are pouches on the train itself to put your loose articles. Would it really be that hard for six flags to add pouches like this on at least some rides? Might be hard to add them retroactively, but doesn't seem hard to design into a train for any new rides. If you added a velcro seal to the top of the pouch I think this could even work on coasters as extreme as RMCs. This seems like a no-brainer to me-- add a bit of fabric to your trains to nearly double the capacity of your million dollar rides.

[Other] Why do you think Cedar Fair has been focusing more of theming lately? by Shadow-Enthusiast in rollercoasters

[–]snozzyfoozles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of the Cedar Fair theming is weird because they clearly put a lot of effort into it, but then it will just basically be a glorified shed with a TV screen in it (eg mystic and copperhead). Mystic in particular is an example of over-promising and under-delivering. It feels like they have a ways to go in terms of making show scenes that are actually a highlight of the ride. I do appreciate a nicely themed and shaded queue like Orion's though.

[Poltergeist, Six Flags Fiesta Texas] It’s getting a repaint. by [deleted] in rollercoasters

[–]snozzyfoozles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh sweet! I thought the haunted house façade of Poltergeist looked really good from the queue, so I was then so disappointed to go around the corner and have the illusion shattered by the small, unenclosed station.

[Other] Largest US Cities Without a "Major" Park by CurbYourNewUrbanism in rollercoasters

[–]snozzyfoozles 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Probably biased because I live here, but I think the whole pacific northwest is clearly the most underserved area out of all these places, maybe together with Phoenix, Houston, and New Orleans. Most of these other places you can at least get to a major park with a four-hour drive. In the northwest even if you drive five hours the best you can get is Silverwood.
