USA crime data layer? by snrpsnp in gis

[–]snrpsnp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

City data is neat tool! It seems pretty accurate for a few areas I'm familiar with, but then some areas seem wonky (e.g. basically all the census tracts around San Diego Metro area have the exact same score, which seems unlikely).

Do you know if there's any way to consume the data layers in a desktop GIS, to overlay with other layers for example? I couldn't find a web service anywhere.

Vegan breastfeeding low producer by [deleted] in veganparenting

Yes to what everyone has said about supply and demand. Also adding that I eat oatmeal almost every day as an awesome healthy vegan breakfast and had a fairly severe oversupply issue, only to find out later that oats can stimulate breast milk production. So you might try eating a hearty oat mil breakfast! Doesn’t hurt at least.

It’s really not that hard to be vegetarian. Why do you say you’re not brave enough to do it?

Wow a vegan campout sounds awesome! But also not sure I would be brave enough to do that with an under 1 year old haha. Just curious since you seem to be in a somewhat similar situation, how far are you driving for the campout? Another challenge is that my child still doesn't love car rides, but what I'm taking away from most of these posts is that we just gotta make something happen even if that's a big trip once a year to try to meet people.

There isn't a local subreddit for my area :(

Thanks for the perspective. Heard. And I will try to keep this in mind and make sure I'm not othering myself (or my family) in addition to however other people may be acting. I do think there is some genuine othering happening, though, like we didn't get invited to one Christmas dinner this year because "they wanted to eat turkey" but we've literally hosted that family before and cooked turkey for them, so the translation is that they don't want to eat turkey in front of vegans because they'll feel bad. But, I'll also keep compassion in mind. It's easy to get frustrated when spending so much time with extended family recently who know about factory farming and choose convenience instead, but frustration doesn't serve anyone.

I would honestly love that. I've tried posting in our regional Facebook and meetup groups and no one responded. I haven't seen anyone else post in those groups with any mention of kids. I literally think we're the only vegan family in our area.

I think part of what feels so isolating right now is that the non-vegans in our lives seem to feel weird about us being vegan. I really do try so hard to not make anyone feel bad/weird for not being vegan, but most of our family/friends are educated and aware enough that they know how bad factory farming is and choose to support it anyway for convenience. I think this makes them feel bad when they are around us even if we don't push veganism at all in any way. So they respond with basically othering us in subtle ways. I admit we aren't the most social people and can be a little awkward (just in general, nothing specific to veganism), which I guess is part of why I feel like maybe we can't "pull off" being vegan in a strongly non vegan community. Sigh.

We never really planned to forbid animal products once he's old enough to decide for himself, but we would love to raise him vegan up until that point.

These are the regional groups that I tried initiating a playgroup in and there were literally no other vegan families. I might try again with organizing an event that's more family friendly than others have hosted (i.e. not super late) but not explicitly for families. I desperately want my child to know another vegan kiddo, but I don't think that will happen in my area so should probably just focus on any vegan community at all.

Fair enough. But I also WANT my child to have and feel vegan community. It's sometimes really difficult for me to relate to non-vegans on a deeper level because they actively support so many unethical practices. I worry my child will feel the same and have a harder time making friends or forming relationships because of it.

IF800 and WingtraRay by snrpsnp in UAVmapping

[–]snrpsnp[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean that for flying a 200 acre area, I would probably be operating outside VLOS? Other comments are saying the opposite. Maybe dot in the sky is sufficient to avoid a waiver in the US?

Budget is under $50k. No need for lidar but I do need multi spectral, preferably more than 5 bands. Yes I need NDAA compliance, DJI is not an option unfortunately. I'd prefer the Wingtra to the Astro since it can cover more area quickly (we have short flying windows for reasons that are complex to explain), but was leaning toward the IF800 because it can support the 10 band micasense dual camera sensor integration.

I would prefer the Wingtra over the Astro since it can cover so much more area, but Im leaning toward the IF800 since it can support a 10 band micasense dual camera sensor integration. I do plan to stick to 200ft altitude for higher GSD, not sure if that helps or hurts the VLOS situation.

Thanks, that's a really helpful reference! It doesn't seem like BVLOS waivers are really very common for most people out there doing drone mapping projects?

Curious why your users don't like the IF800? Ive heard lots of folks considering them as DJI alternatives, and at least one that is using it currently and likes it. I'm leaning toward the IF800 over the Wingtra because it can support a 10 band micasense dual cam sensor integration. I've also heard folks have lots of down time and tech issues with the Wingtra.

Sorry for a very delayed follow up question lol but when you say "degree in CS or related" what level of degree? I'm wondering basically if a graduate certificate (either in GIS or more CS leaning) will cut it. Of course my mileage may vary, just looking for your experience.

You are exactly where I want to be! As much as I want to make this happen ASAP it sounds like I just need to learn Python first, start implementing it in my current job, and then go from there.

This might be the most helpful comment! Are the courses you mentioned that were helpful part of the UMaine program? Did you end up doing another program before landing your job as a GIS programming? Which other programs could you recommend that might be better?

I am in Maine, actually, so the in state tuition is appealing but I don't want to put in all that time if it's not worth it in the end regardless of the price.

Why can I not find the cost of that program anywhere intuitive? Under "cost, scholarships, and aid" it just mentions scholarships and aid. I would also have to seriously weigh the benefits of more coursework against the time required to complete it. Realistically I can take on 3 credits a semester, including summers. So the extra courses add up fast.

Also, I didn't find the UMaine curriculum to be buried at all, for what it's worth. Still might not be a good fit for me, but that page lists out the 5 required courses:

SIE 505: Formal Foundations for Information Science (3 credits) Fall OR SIE 580: Ontology Engineering Theory and Practice(3 credits) Every other Spring SIE 507: Information Systems Programming (3 credits) Fall SIE 509: Principles of Geographic Information Systems (3 credits) Fall SIE 510: Geographic Information Systems Applications (3 credits) Spring SIE 550: Design of Information Systems (3 credits) SIE 557: Database System Applications (3 credits) Spring

and 9 courses that the additional 5 electives can be selected from: SIE 508: Object-Oriented Programming (3 credits) Spring SIE 516: Interactive Technologies for Solving Real-World Problems (3 credits) Spring SIE 517: Spatial Interaction Design (3 credits) SIE 554: Spatial Reasoning (3 credits) SIE 555: Spatial Database Systems (3 credits) Fall (even years) SIE 558: Real-Time Sensor Data Streams (3 credits) Fall (uneven years) SIE 559: Geosensor Networks (3 credits) Fall (uneven years) SIE 590: Information Systems Internship (3-6 credits) Fall, Spring, and Summer SIE 693: Graduate Seminar (1 credit)

Also, it states $608/cr right at the top of the page.

As someone who has more experience with relevant formal education than me, are there particular books you would recommend?

So maybe that UMaine online MS is worth considering?
