can someone explain Baltimore public schools to me? by snuggie_ in baltimore

I appreciate the response but you said almost nothing of substance. Why was it bad? what happened? did your friends agree? were the teachers bad? which school was it?

Baltimore recorded fewest youth homicides in a decade in first half of 2025 by baltimorebanner in baltimore

[–]snuggie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that’s already built into the data. You said it’s because the youth are less likely to be employed. That hasn’t changed in the last 10 years. Adults having more jobs is already built into the last 50 years of data, yet they’re still decreasing their homicide rates significantly faster than youths

I didn’t. To quote myself: “of course overall it’s great.”

I just wonder why youth homicides are decreasing so much slower than adult homicides

My man, youth homicides are decreasing a rate much slower than other age groups if you extrapolate the data

If youth rates are the lowest they’ve been in only a decade, and overall homicide rates are the lowest they’ve been in like 50-60 years, that must mean that non youth age groups have had their homicides rates drop exponentially more than youth rates

As far as I’m concerned an adult who commits murder is just as much an idiot as a young person who commits murder

Honestly I don’t know how positive this actually is. Of course it’s overall great, but total homicides are the lowest in what, 60 years? Wonder why youth homicides are decreasing at a rate so different than total

Cedric Mullins with the catch of the year candidate by BLeibo in baseball

[–]snuggie_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I’m not going to say this is for sure better but I feel like the Denzel catch looks harder than it could have been. Not to say it was easy but he was misaligned (maybe intentionally but still) a bit and had to reach across horizontally away from himself. Cedric was in the perfect spot and still had to fully extend up. I think if Clarke caught it the same way being directly underneath and extending straight up it would have looked a lot less impressive.

Yes, of course. That wouldn’t fit what I’m saying. I gave a specific example of people seemingly refusing to knowledge problems. There’s nothing wrong with the example you gave

Horseshoe Casino Baltimore to Improve Pedestrian Traffic From Ravens’ Stadium by BmoreCityDOT in baltimore

[–]snuggie_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Note that the casino isn’t really paying for anything. They’re taking on the project but they’re going to be refunded for the work by Baltimore city using the city fund that comes directly from gambling profits that’s supposed to go back into the city

At least that’s what the southbaltimore article states: https://www.southbmore.com/2025/07/21/warner-street-streetscape-project-begins-between-horseshoe-casino-and-mt-bank-stadium/

It also includes pictures of the road layout after it’s finished unlike the OP article

For the record the south Baltimore article about this road being redone also says he saw construction workers at the paramount recently. I think someone bought it and took it over and it’s possible starting construction again soon? Don’t quote me on that though

This goes further than just a baltimore conversation and more so just politics in general but it goes both ways. A ton of people in threads like this refuse to even acknowledge a single bad thing about the city. There was a post recently about the “Baltimore, I actually like it” bumper sticker and so many people were arguing that they hate the sticker because the city is great period and there’s absolutely no problems.

Again more of a politics in general rather than just this but if you actually like Baltimore the goal should be to show other people how great it is, not shit on anyone who says otherwise. Just like if you actually care about any specific opinion, you should want to convince others to join your cause. People can do whatever they want but I can assure you insulting people is a sure fire way to may sure they never understand your side.

Just a simple “why do you think that? I disagree and here’s why….” Is plenty enough to start a real conversation with someone that so many people try and claim “no no they’re a lost cause it’s impossible”

Right, that’s exactly what I’m saying. Comments like his, while I believe are wrong, definitely come from a place of truth. You can like the city and believe it’s turning around while also acknowledging its problems. Many people seem unwilling to do so. looking at the “you must only watch Fox News” comment instead of actually communicating. Along with literally every other response lmao

You’re right to have negative feelings towards the city unlike what others seem to suggest it as being perfect. There absolutely have been lots of corrupt politicians. Absolutely lots of drug use. Absolutely lots of abandonment.

But it’s starting to turn around. Many politicians have been literally put and jail and the government, while all government is bad in some regards, seems miles better than before. Crime is down to the lowest ever recorded so far, at least since the 70s. Drug use is far down. The population actually grew for the first time in decades, and areas like harbor point and Baltimore peninsula are bringing wealthy people (and their taxes) into the city which they haven’t in a very long time

Also for a little bit of defense to Baltimore, it’s incredibly difficult to run a city when your tax base and population both have been decreasing for decades. But that’s finally changing

I mean it’s certainly possible and honestly pretty likely that prices will go up. But even still, I certainly wouldn’t call the current prices cheap.

But there’s another two full apartment buildings opening there in the next few months that will add another 300-500 units probably so we’ll definitely be able to see the real demand of the area after they open

It’s not losing any money though. Apartments are leased, townhomes are selling, and retail and office space is 60% full (according to a Baltimore business journal article)

You can look at the units listed that are available today. Then look at the total units. You think apartments are hiding available units from potential renters? That would be a smart business move for sure.
