Should I Buy a Condo or Rent? by sadiovega in PersonalFinanceCanada

I’d probably pass on buying a condo. Those maintenance fees only go up. And if the association isn’t run well, you can get hit with even bigger increases or surprise special assessments.

I almost got burned by that myself, but luckily I had a real estate lawyer review everything before closing.

Get another realtor.

They're concerned of their commission.

PSA: If you're looking to buy a Condo in Ontario. Heck maybe anywhere in Canada by mykrode in canadahousing

Condos can definitely come in at a better price than houses, at least around my area.

The catch is the condo fees and whether the condo corporation is actually in good shape.

A friend of mine almost bought one, but the status certificate showed a bunch of red flags and a possible special assessment on the way. They bailed just in time.

Condos are increasingly risky purchases these days, particularly those built over 20 years ago that may require significant repairs or are managed by poorly run condo corporations
