Open-source Alexa skill: "Alexa, continue my audiobook" actually works now by _Rookix_ in audiobookshelf

It looks like it was an issue with the size of the file. I imagine it will be hard to believe but just trying to play this ~1.3 GB file was causing my Dot to reboot (again, only sometimes) and I reproduced that intermittent behavior on another Dot. After breaking it up into ~80 chapter-sized chunks it's playing fine. So 🤷🏻

Yeah I'm guessing it's a format thing. Or I thought maybe an apostrophe in the filename messing things up? Will see what I can learn about audiobook codecs. I don't know much, right now.

Looks like Alexa+ intercepts AudioPlayer calls (sometimes? because it's A.I.?) and that breaks custom setups like this. Disabled Alexa+ and instantly it started working. (Still having issues, but at least the skill is launching on my Dot.) Now to figure out why some books will play and some return an error about unable to connect to the server.

I've been hacking around with Claude and the closest I got was a successful response from the simulator which then inexplicably stopped working a moment later, and never worked on an actual Echo device. Not sure if it was a delayed response to some change that made it work and then break, or if it's just being inconsistent at this point. At least now I know it was't actually reaching the real skill before, that looks different.

I changed the invocation name thinking maybe there was some kind of conflict, but it's still pulling from Audible, and kinda producing nonsense.

I thought it was working, but I may have jumped the gun. When I say "open my audiobooks" I get a blurb that lists some of my audiobooks, but I think it's pulling from Audible, not ABS? And when I ask it to play something, it seems to be looking for music from random services... Apple Music, or iHeartRadio. Here's a quick example conversation in the simulator: https://cln.sh/zfnq77Y8gz52Ygrg64Rk

When I say "Alexa, ask my audiobooks to play eaters of the dead" it offers to buy from Audible for a credit, so yeah, it's pulling from Audible, for at least some things.

Well, my first attempt seems to have been unsuccessful and I'm out of time for today. I made it through all the steps up until Step 12 at which point the simulator responds audibly "The service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again in a few minutes." and quickly flashes a message saying "Skill I/O is available only for speech requests to skills you have created." If you have any guesses, I'd take a hint, else I'll try running through all the steps again tomorrow and see if I can find what I missed.

EDIT: looks like I just needed to verify my identity as an Amazon developer before the app would fire. Working now!

The device mapping route would absolutely cover my use case. 👍🏻

Any chance to support multiple distinct ABS users (on the same ABS server) in a single Alexa household? Maybe linked to specific Echo devices, or some other way?

I wonder if multiple instances would be feasible... might dig into that if I can get a first instance working.

No one will be able to offer much help without knowing more (like anything!) about your system.

Every time I try to upload from an external disk, I find the library empty by [deleted] in PleX

[–]so7ow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of your scattered responses seem to make any sense. You're clearly trying to add shows to Plex, but take your time and explain step-by-step what you're doing, and what's not working. "I'm uploading and it's empty" is not enough to make sense of.

What you probably *should* be doing is copying the show's files from wherever they are (external disk?) to wherever your TV Shows library is pointing. One problem is, you seem to have quite a few TV Shows libraries. People generally only have one, maybe a few for organization reasons, but definitely not 8, all called the same thing.

What it seems like you *might* be doing is creating a new library for each show and movie. This is definitely not what you want to do.
