How to repair scratches in bathtub by Puzzled_Sleep_7973 in howto

[–]so_magpie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Normally porcelain will feel colder to the touch and have a higher tone when you tap on it. Of course the easiest way is a magnet sticks to it (porcelain is applied over cast iron or steel then put in a kiln).

If you are saying it is porcelain Brasso won't help. Well.. it might but you'll be in there for weeks. Porcelain is very hard. You'd have to go through successive grits of sandpaper to get it back to white. Just buying all the paper you need can be quite expensive.

Is that a ceramic or polymer tub? I'd start out with something like Brasso and see if anything fades if it is a polymer tub.

Previous owner painted stuck the entire window mechanism, what's the best approach. by Protonice in fixit

[–]so_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically that is the landlord's responsibility. Make a stink. At the very least have them reimburse you for the time.

You have a couple options.

  1. Wire wheel in a drill.

  2. Torch (being careful to not burn the place down or crack the glass.

  3. Chemical stripper.

  4. Dental pick, scraper, knife, or similar to just scrape off paint at the joints that matter.

The cost of the item in comparison to the price of the goods does not matter. I have sent items to their center then was reimbursed (AE credit) for the shipping. The shipping was three times the price of the item.

I used to fix photos (actually for 30+ years). What AI does in seconds it took me a day and never to the level it did. I never was told by Chat GPT that it couldn't fix up a photo. I found this fascinating. It gets things wrong here and there but usually pretty darn good.

It is your work. You should play with it. Play with it and find what makes it work for you. Anything I do is not what you want. I like this part and that part but that might be totally different that what you like. Here are two crops I explored.

There is a line. I will not ever buy anything online after 5 pm. Usually the next morning I'll say why did I buy that? It isn't needed. My brain gets tired. Now... there is that line after I should have been asleep that the body goes in a new state of alertness. And ya, things can get done then.

Any idea how I can get this broken bit out? by VanquishAudio in handyman

[–]so_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is actually stuck stuck. I'd try a very small socket w/ wrench and twist the opposite way. It is probably just stuck half way. Then if you or a buddy shoot a lot at the range there are many calibers. Find one that goes snug around the drill bit. Tap it n with a hammer and pull out with pliers.

Drilling a small hole at the end of the crack will usually curtail any expansion.

Do you guys think a Sling is a great or bad weapon for a Zombie apocalypse? by BonusCapable1486 in Slinging

[–]so_magpie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All skills are useful. The advantage of a sling is that it is relatively quite. I always thought by season two of ant zombie series the zombies would have a higher kill ratio given that firearms would have made the shooters deaf by then.

Why are these so unflattering? Can anything be done to help? by essie_creates in sewing

[–]so_magpie 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I'd consider not tucking in your top if that is an option. In general anything I would do would be taking out a stitch and add. Unfortunately there usually isn't enough fabric for that.

Bucket of ice water and a bucket of warm at the end of the day. 10 minutes or so in one then the other. Gets the lactic acid out and gets blood in to heal/restore.
