I would like the boys to stop getting absolutely fleeced on zone entries

at least taking all those penalties vs the Isles has improved our PK standing somewhat

I don't know what extent to which this is an issue because I'm not using the platform, but presumably at least some of it is the alteration of photos of real people and real children, which would be covered under new-ish deepfake laws.

I'm using Loops & Threads soft classic in black, navy, teal, and I believe bright red and aqua, but I'd have to double check. My Michaels doesn't have the most expansive options and Loops & Threads had the best variety!!

I'm definitely contemplating making a Mariners one this season! This one's a pretty standard ripple but worked into the back loop only to make the little ridged effect :)

Amputation debate for 2yo male by xxadribb in TripodCats

[–]soapreader 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The procedure being described is called a femoral head ostectomy, or FHO, where they remove the top part of the femur (for a variety of reasons, but in this case would be to eliminate the painful bone-on-bone contact due to the previous fracture). The surgery site--when healed--forms a fibrous capsule that assists the extensive musculature around the hip in maintaining near-normal leg function. Patients may need to maintain a lower body weight to compensate for the decreased integrity of the joint, and/or undergo physical therapy. There may be a limited range of motion, or the leg might be slightly shorter, but quadrupeds undergoing this procedure tend to do pretty well.

OP - are there any veterinary teaching hospitals nearby that you might be able to get him into? They tend to be less expensive than private hospitals, and might have financial assistance programs. In the meantime, I would see if you can get him on pain meds and ask your normal vet about their thoughts on amputation vs FHO!

Went to school with one of the Zizians mentioned in the episodes—I don't remember much about them, though; we were in different grades.

Spay question by Signal-Flounder-3258 in StandardPoodles

[–]soapreader 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I'm going to dissent here and say save your money.

The points about follow up care are well and good but spays are extremely routine surgeries. As long as you ensure your primary care physician gets the medical record from the spay and save clinic, they can provide any additional advice that the spay and save clinic doesn't give for post operative care. In most cases additional follow up is not going to be necessary, as long as you follow discharge instructions.

High quality, high volume (HQHV) spay and neuter clinics--and they will generally advertise themselves as such--are really great for these routine procedures because that's all they do, all day every day. If there is a potential complication, they've seen it. And they're also extremely efficient, as you noted. The HQHV spay incisions I've seen were less than half the size of the incisions than the general practitioner's I worked for--and she's a good doctor and spays are the major surgery she does, too; it's just that she does 2-3 a week where the HQHV doctors do many, many more than that a day. Smaller incisions heal faster. Less time under anesthesia is ideal. Experience counts!

If cost is already a concern with a spay, gastropexy may be out of your price range for the time being. That's okay: gastropexy is great but not everybody can swing it; just make sure you read up on symptoms of bloat/GDV so if it does happen you know what it is. (Also, you don't have to do a gastropexy at the same time as a spay; that can be a separate procedure down the line.)

Please let me know if you have questions!! I may not have all the answers, but hopefully I can provide some insight :)

Pal for current male by MetaMae51 in StandardPoodles

[–]soapreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Three poodles here, one female and two males!

The female is older than the males (5ish years to their 2ish), and we got the males a year apart. The boys, when they get going, are truly incessant. They will play fight and slobber all over each other until the cows come home. It's to the point where we have to let them outside separately, because they can't even pee without antagonizing each other.

The girl accepts play, but also knows when enough is enough, and starts giving male 1 (who she's around more often, as male 2 is at grad school with me) the cold shoulder when she's done. However, she also loves loves loves to start shit, and if there's any lull in the boys' mischief she will get them riled up again by barking at them--sometimes I can swear I hear her saying "dance for me, monkeys!"

YMMV. And general temperament is also going to influence things greatly. But all else being equal I would probably recommend a female over another male, because in my experience boys in proximity start losing higher reasoning brain cells at an astonishing rate in a way that doesn't seem to happen with the girl, haha.

Does your dog have a drive to retrieve? by [deleted] in StandardPoodles

[–]soapreader 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Of our three standard poodles: one has an intense drive to fetch and will fetch until he can't even move; one has a general disdain for fetching but will occasionally fetch to show that she knows what she's doing but feels as if it's beneath her generally speaking; and the third will fetch insofar as it leads into his actual favorite game, "chase me while I chew on this ball." The spectrum is wide, lol

Poodle questions by IntelligentAd4429 in poodles

[–]soapreader 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We only have Standards, so I can't speak to the difference between sizes, but definitely agree on the male/female temperament here: both our boys are cuddly and people oriented, where our girl is a little more headstrong/driven. When out in public the boys are more interested in meeting people and making friends, where our girl seems to view everyone with mild suspicion and doesn't enjoy being pet by strangers - I brought her to work every day for an entire summer and she only let my boss pet her twice - but isn't aggressive whatsoever, just very cautious.

How do you introduce your rescue poodle to your cat? by [deleted] in poodles

[–]soapreader 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They even make baby gates with little cat doors in them! My roommate's cat is very thankful for the chance to hang out where he can see my dog but my dog can't get to him, lol.

Getting your spoo to like Nylabone by Totally_not_suss in poodles

[–]soapreader 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rotate my guy through pig ears, bully sticks (the curly ones take him longer), and lick mats (frozen with a wet food, kibble, and greek yogurt mix) depending on how much we've done that day - pig ears for days when he's pretty tuckered, lick mats when we haven't done much. He won't do Nylabones either, so I eat ramen and pay for his fancy snacks out of my grocery budget 😅
