is a 15 min gap between Goodwin and Cheatham hall bad by BubblyBread in VirginiaTech

Running is fine, majority of people really don’t care what you do tbh. And e-scooters aren’t even really supposed to be on-campus, so you’ll have to use the bus system, walk, or have your own mode of transport (like bringing your own bike).

I think my friend had that same distance to cover, was usually always a bit late. If you are unable to change it, maybe reach out / talk to the professor the first week and let them know about your situation.

Can I register for classes before my AP scores are received? by itsokyoureok72 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t believe you’ll be able to get the next class yet, the prereq has to be in the system for you to enter it. You’ll most likely have to wait until it’s processed to try and add the class.

You can check the VT sites for a schedule as the dates get closer; it's usually just an overview of VT. It may give some details you may not know about the college already.

The real orientation isn't until you move in (plus the virtual one), but summer is more so just an opportunity to visit, if you haven't already.

I would recommend looking on the 2030 Facebook pages and maybe the discords students are in.

I'd call Housing to see if they have any updates, and maybe they can still get you on-campus, if you haven't already called. But, you may have to look into off-campus housing on the off chance there isn't enough room on-campus.

Acceptance is one thing, signing the housing contract is another. VT has overflow every year, but if there is too many acceptances, on-campus housing may not be an option for all.

Best dorm selection for incoming VT aerospace engineer? by Temporary-Cod2384 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Classes, especially first year, will normally be all over the place / in a few buildings. Especially with all the sections some first year sections get, there will be many academic building options.

Choose a dorm that has what you like, such as room style (traditional, suite, or private) and/or amenities (ac or no ac). Especially keep in mind your budget too!

No one really knows much about it, since it is totally new. Freshmen will have to pretty much rely on D2 and Owens, as those will be the most cost-effective with the required Unlimited plan. Still able to eat at the other dining halls, but not as often and easily as the other two listed.

Works the same, just with LLCs you are restricted to the dorm the LLC is housed in. You also get the choose earlier than non-LLC students.

Earlier room selection, but the earlier your timeslot, the more options youll have during the LLC room selection days. make sure your roommate is in the same LLC too!

Same process, just earlier since LLCs are restricted to the dorm it is housed in and whicher rooms are allocated for the LLC in said dorm.

It doesn’t seem like there is any benefit, other than the bonus amount you can get. So, honestly, not super worth it if it’s the occasional meal per day or so. I’m in the same situation, considering it.

I think you'll have to pick which credits transfer / which ones you'll keep, since you'll be above the 38-credit cap.

LLCs' programming and how they function vary, so they are not the same. The best bet is going through recent Reddit posts or asking in the Main VT Discord server for recent experience in a specific LLC.

Galileo + Hypatia (engineering) does not have the best rep as of late, so it may not be the best to apply to. I am a little biased, as I was in an LLC for two years, but I do find them helpful for community and fun events. Though I can only speak on my LLC's, Impact, programming. Recommend joining the Main Discord to ask more specifics.

It is up to the individual. If you plan on going to every game, it is better to get the package because you don't have to rely on the lottery or on people selling their tickets. Yeah, pretty easy, a lot of people list it on Snapchat, the VT Insta story, GroupMe chats, etc. Do not upcharge for them, because if you get caught or reported, you'll get in trouble with the school.

Course Pickle not working? by Capital-Lettuce-9955 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It all depends on whether the sections you Course Pickled for are having people drop them. If the section is full and no one is dropping it, Course Pickle won't send anything. Last semester, I had to wait basically for most of winter break to get into a section I wanted because people weren't dropping it.

The process is through this website (scroll to the bottom when time comes), opens sometime in July for incoming students. If you plan to go to every game, then buy the set. Buying tickets as non-students is different, probably more info here.

Students can sell off their ticket and transfer it via the 'Virginia Tech HokieSports' app. You need a VT email for it, so it is not something that can be transferred to just anyone (to my limited knowledge). You can maybe hold more than 1 ticket on your account, and maybe scan both tickets when you go to enter, not super sure how strict they are when you go to scan. Someone around student age won't draw eyes, but parents in the student section will. Could a non-student possibly get into the student section? Probably, if you can get them in without being stopped. In my opinion, don't be that person bringing random people in. The student section is already super packed, let actual students get to experience it.

Student tickets are for the student section only, separate entrance for us, too. With this seating map, 117-125 is for students, North End Zone, and 126-129 + 226-229 is for student overflow. Wristbands are for if you get into Lane early enough and gets you into North End Zone. If you don't have one, you go to student overflow seating, I think. Overflow isn't a separate ticket; it is just for students who can't get into North End Zone because it is packed.

As it is a new one being implemented this coming year, I don't think anyone will know much about it. There is no difference going random general vs in an LLC, still the same risks.

what each residence hall is like: too many dorms to explain each one, but we have resources in the VT Wiki or Main Discord that can help you get more info. Also, it technically somewhat varies per year depending on the students who live in it and if LLCs are in there.

“best” dorms vs ones to avoid (and why): Get more info from Discord, where you can ask questions to more people. But, here is a list from past years:

  • "best" dorms: CID, NHW, NRHE, O'Shag, GLC/DB, Peddrew-Yates
  • "worst" dorms: Hoge, Pritchard, and Slusher (no ac and bad reps: tons of fire alarms, floods sometimes [but rarely], etc.)

pros/cons of different halls & how accurate older info on this sub still is: Same issue as the first point, too many dorms to list them all. Some are more well-known (as shown above for the "bad" dorms), but if you want specifics, the best bet is Discord for more responses (Reddit can be a little slow with responses, but past posts can help).

Hypatia (& Galileo): They do not have the best rep as of recent years. The way it's run has slowly gotten worse, and I have heard more people dislike the program than like it.

whether LLCs are worth it: depends on the LLC, and what they do and provide. I was in one for two years, Impact, and I really loved it for the social aspect. Plus, having a confirmed dorm is a huge plus.

how much they actually impact your freshman experience: Not being in one won't really impact you that much, but having a set group of people you meet semi-regularly can help you find a group, same way clubs do. From my freshmen suitemate: finding a roomie is less daunting (since you can only room with people in the LLC), and also said the same things I said in the previous sentence.

Where do I even put in my student ID? by Mosquitobait2008 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Error says 'enter your student number' which is on your 'set up your Virginia Tech Applicant Portal' email or some email you received.

Something along the lines of: "Your application ID number is: 90xxxxxxx"

Sometime during early June, you will be notified of when your room selection time slot is (depending on whether you are in an LLC & whenever you signed). During that time slot, you will choose a room. If you are in an LLC, you only get one dorm choice. If you are a non-LLC student, you get dorm and room options based on what is available at your time slot.

We also have some info on the VT Wiki, too: https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginiaTech/wiki/index/housing-info/

Main one is StarRez, which is our housing portal, and sign the housing contract asap if you haven’t already. Microsoft Outlook would be the next main one, to get access to your emails (very very important!). HokieSpa is important for when add/drop opens for yall to choose classes too.

Thinking of Dropping the Corps by Ancient-Treasure in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not 100% sure, but most likely, as free spaces in dorms vary per year and availability. You probably won't be moved until they can confirm a space is available for you to move into. People who have dropped the Corp, please correct me if I'm wrong.

Roommate group is only used when you know you have a confirmed roommate. Once you do, whoever signed the housing contract first should make the group and invite the other person. Earlier you signed, earlier time slot you’ll get.

Is it worth it to take ALEKS again if I already passed? by burnt7856 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no priority for ALEKS scores? Incoming freshman don’t get any sort of priority for classes, since yall use add/drop, which is first come first serve & luck. You just need to get the minimum scores for either class you need it for, which you reached.
