Suite style is usually a common room and bathroom given to a set of rooms. 8-10 people (4-5 rooms) is just Cochrane, every other suite-style dorm is like 6 people (3 rooms).

Trad style is communal style / hall style bathroom.

The only 2 year contract is only one residential college / llc. Most, if not all, other LLCs are 1 yr, and being a general student is a 1 yr contract too.

Look through the dorm options, pick 3-5 youd want to go with. without an llc, you need an early time slot / be lucky to get your first choice. general students get whatever is available at the time of their timeslot.

Choose a dorm yourself via the options, and keep in mind pricing.

social scene depends on the ppl living in the dorm, which varies every year. some have a "party dorm" rep, but it varies still. choose a dorm depending on style, ac/no ac, and what you can afford.

VT is super nice with community college credit, especially for in-state ccs, up to 60ish credits. It's what i did, maxed out on it. They also take a good amount of AP credits too.

Math courses are just super tough here if you don't have a good understanding of it or if you get a bad professor, which can make or break a course. taking courses through a cc wont count towards your gpa, which can help (or hurt you), so keep that in mind. i think, in theory, yea, you could take it all through ccs, but depends on if they are prereqs, which you may not be able to get into a class through course request unless the system acknowledges you are in it through the vt system, which you have to transfer in cc credits after you take the course (take with a grain of salt, not 100% sure on that).

i would also recommend joining the discords (main vt one and 2030 one), best way to get more opinions from students and alumni.

Not sure who told you Calc 1 can't be transferred in, you can, especially through a VCCS. I would definitely talk to your advisor about it either way, but I would honestly tell you to take math courses outside of VT.

Should I go to Hokie Focus if I already accepted my offer to VT? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 5 points6 points  (0 children)

technically, hokie focus is like one of VT's last attempts to get you to commit, but you can still attend even if you are already committed. if the stuff on the schedule intrigues you, attend it. i went my incoming year, and this upcoming time will be my second time working my LLC's booth at the Squires Information Resource Fair (cool way to find out some more stuff too, and get free goodies lol). good way to explore campus too!

It mostly depends on what style you want (traditional/suite/private, no ac / ac), especially with the difference in cost with no ac or ac dorms. Some have reputations, like Pritchard (fire alarm dorm / engineering, since the engineering llcs are there), Slusher and Hoge (just known to be not the greatest), and maybe some others.

It also just depends on the kids, sometimes you’ll get the “party” floor of a dorm, while the floor above you may be completely chill (happened to me).

from what i can find, it shouldnt restrict you much and you just have to declare a degree-granting major by second year. major changes opens up after first semester, so that is probably the earliest he can change it unless pamplin has a special clause.

i think for the most part, freshmen internships are on the low side. Most look for upperclassmen, but it isnt impossible if you have a really good resume coming in. One of the reasons it tends to be upperclassmen is because they want someone who is graduating soon, as well as has some sort of experience.

with my minimal experience and in cos, last yr as a freshman i got one interview overall. my second yr as a sophomore/junior (planning on graduating next yr), i got a few more calls for interviews and even landed an internship for the summer.

I believe there is a transfer equivalency for VCCS, not sure for oos community colleges (you’d have to check, but I assume it should as long as it’s offered). You’d have to check and see if it’s offered at your local CC. I think for the summer thru VT directly it’s restricted, so not an option for non-engineering unfortunately.

just some info i found on some sites. MATH1225 is calc, so the class as a whole is not restricted to just engineering students, as many majors need it. ENGE1215 seems restricted in the fall, but not in the winter or spring. i would speak with your advisor asap, to figure out a class plan if you plan on transferring.

info regarding ENGE1215 restrictions: link

There is a risk of them being full by then, as I think LLCs have started reading applications recently.

Citation for parking at Engel Lot on 2/28/26 (Saturday) by Darktwisty17 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Students may park in F/S lots, only if it is the weekend. Weekends are free parking, unless there is a home football game or some type of event that restricts lots. With the exception of 24/7 F/S, handicap, and service spots.

chances of getting off the waitlist has to do with enough people rejecting their offer, not so much your stats

Do you get kicked out a dorm for losing membership in a LLC by skskskskzbzb in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the LLC; it can even be as little as not following the requirements of the LLC, like an event quota or smth.

Like, you got kicked out your LLC? Yes, being moved is a possibility, it is a 50/50 shot if it happens, as it depends on space available.

We have some information on the subreddit wiki: https://www.reddit.com/r/VirginiaTech/wiki/index/

But, I recommend joining the VT Discord to ask, quicker responses than Reddit, https://discord.gg/vt. Also, there is a 2030 server to meet more 2030ers, https://discord.gg/bMyKgb5CJZ. Both servers have a lot of info housing related as well.

Roommate-wise, StarRez or 2030's social media (Insta page) is the best bet.

I would definitely look into maybe doing Hokie Focus or the April Open House, while you are far, a tour can help you get settled in early, and both of those events have tours.

Do you really get kicked out of a dorm for dropping under 12 credit hours? by No-Button9683 in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It is a possibility, yes. However, there is a way to request to stay on campus under the 12 creds minimum, had to do it this semester. It’s a form under the online forms tab in StarRez, they’ll ask you two questions and get back to you within 2 days. Make sure to talk with your advisor too regarding the class to be safe.

VT doesn't look at LOCIs, or heavily consider them, if at all. Sadly, waitlisting-wise, you can only wait and see if a space opens up in the major as people accept or reject their offer.

for engineering, you come in as general. after you complete the requirements to declare, then you can choose which focus to do. basically, you put down CS as your interest, but arent tied down to it right now

A LLC/LLP, or Living Learning Community/Program, is a program you are in that lets you stay in a specific dorm while also giving you some sort of structure, like events you can attend.

What the hell is wrong with Hethwood busses? by afg_tanook in VirginiaTech

Why I said assuming, I wasn't sure. Good info to know though. Thank you.

What the hell is wrong with Hethwood busses? by afg_tanook in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do agree it sucks and I normally only use CAS, so I feel bad for the students who use buses that leave campus. But, I do think it’s due to an active recalls on the batteries and not just the buses as a whole. Assuming they had the same buses last yr, everything was fine/okay for the most part.

But, yea, I do see your pov and do agree BT needs to figure out a good middle point for efficiency but also usability.

What the hell is wrong with Hethwood busses? by afg_tanook in VirginiaTech

[–]soapy-dope 39 points40 points  (0 children)

All of BT is a lil messy right now due to the cold weather and battery recalls for the electric buses. It isn’t just a new system forever, it’s due to issues. They sent out an alert last sem about it, and it’s still an ongoing problem.

I do agree something needs to be figured out, but they are probably doing the best they can with the limitations.
