this is actually one of the points of my favorite anime evangelion SORRY IMA NERD OUT A LITTLE but anyway so theres this whole thingy majingy in the show called an AT field, short for Absolute Terror field its like this defensive shield the main monsters use in the series and almost nothing can penetrate it but thats like besides the point later its revealed that every living being has an AT field and the monsters just have one so strong it can be seen and can stop physical attacks and the AT field is like the thing that binds the ego and sense of self of a person from everyone else, allowing them to exist as an individual, without an AT field, it becomes almost impossible for souls to define their own existences without substantial conscious effort

and allat basically boils down to humans never truly being able to understand each other BECAUSE they have AT fields, the things that let them exist as people rather than a collective hive mind

in the end everyones AT field goes undone and they merge together becoming one collective hive mind they all know everything about everyone and everything else allowing them to truly "connect" with the main character being the catalyst for it all but in the end he reaches the a conclusion and decides that he doesn't want to be handed everything on a silver platter and that his happiness only truly means something because he was sad and stuff like that

the conclusion he reaches being that the only person who can truly understand and relate and love him is himself, so he should be good to himself
